    Project Activities

The main activities in Siglufjörður focus on forestry, environmental care, and community projects. Volunteers help maintain and develop a manmade forest and support local renovation and maintenance work. Tasks may include planting, clearing vegetation, general upkeep, painting, and other practical activities depending on the needs of the community. The work varies according to the weather conditions.

    Typical Tasks Include:

    *Forestry and Environmental Work:

    • Replanting trees, bushes, and flowers
    • Moving plants to more suitable locations
    • Planting new vegetation and repairing fences
    • Cutting branches, trimming, or removing dead trees
    • Mowing grass, collecting debris, and maintaining walking paths

    *Community Projects:

    • Supporting small renovation tasks such as helping at the local church or cleaning community spaces
    • Collecting litter and debris along the coastline
    • Removing waste that harms wildlife and the natural environment
    • Raising awareness about sustainability within the local community

The work is mostly outdoors, offering hands-on experience in environmental protection and community engagement, surrounded by the stunning fjords and landscapes of northern Iceland. Flexibility is essential, as weather conditions can change quickly; as the locals say, “If you don’t like the Icelandic weather, wait five minutes.”

This is the perfect project for those who enjoy outdoor work, teamwork, and meaningful physical challenges in a truly unique Arctic setting.

    Participants

If you are healthy, have a great attitude, and want to work alongside a local project team, then we will have a placement for you.

In general, volunteers should be at least 18 years old. There is no maximum age limit for the majority of our workcamps.

    Camp Leaders

    Their main responsibilities include:

    • Coordinating daily work activities and making sure tasks are completed safely and efficiently.
    • Organizing leisure activities, cultural events, and excursions.
    • Coordinating shopping, cooking, cleaning, and house schedules with the volunteer team.
    • Supporting communication between volunteers, WF Iceland, and the local project.
    • Documenting camp activities through photos, reports, and volunteer feedback.
    • Helping create a positive, respectful, and inclusive atmosphere within the group.

Apart from these additional responsibilities, Camp Leaders are equal members of the volunteer team and participate in the daily activities alongside the other volunteers.

Most of our Camp Leaders come from different countries, as we proudly welcome international leaders through our partner organizations. Before leading a project, all Camp Leaders complete a one-week training program to prepare them for their responsibilities and to help ensure a safe, organized, and rewarding experience for everyone.

    What to Pack?

Icelandic weather is famously unpredictable, and conditions can change quickly. You may experience sunshine, rain, strong winds, and even snow in the same day, depending on the season and location. We recommend coming prepared for different weather conditions.

    Essential items to bring:

    • Waterproof hiking boots – essential for outdoor and countryside activities.
    • Warm, layered clothing – layers are the best way to adapt to changing temperatures.
    • Waterproof and windproof jacket – very important, especially for outdoor projects.
    • Waterproof trousers – recommended for rainy and windy conditions.
    • Swimsuit and towel – useful for Iceland’s swimming pools and hot springs.
    • Indoor slippers or shoes – outdoor shoes are not worn inside the accommodation.
    • Warm socks, hat, and gloves – recommended even during the warmer months.
    • Personal medication and any essential personal items.
    • Reusable water bottle.
    • Cultural items – food, photos, music, games, or anything from your country to share during intercultural activities.
    • Hairdryer – optional.
    • Cash (ISK) – useful for personal expenses or activities where card payment may not be available.
    • Travel documents and insurance information – keep your passport/ID and relevant travel or insurance documents accessible.

Baggage allowance: 1 large suitcase and 1 small carry-on bag.

Tip: Pack practical clothing rather than bringing too many items. Good waterproof footwear and proper layers will make a big difference during your stay in Iceland.

There is plenty to discover in Siglufjörður during your free time, from outdoor adventures and beautiful landscapes to local culture and history. The town offers hiking trails, museums, a swimming pool, cafés, restaurants, and other local attractions to explore.

Nature is always close by. Depending on the season and weather conditions, volunteers can enjoy hiking, swimming, golfing, and exploring the surrounding mountains and fjords. When hiking, always check the weather and trail conditions, stay on marked trails, respect the environment, and avoid climbing steep or unfamiliar terrain without proper experience or a professional guide.

WF Iceland also organizes affordable weekend and one-day excursions to some of Iceland’s most spectacular natural attractions, including waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, lava fields, hot springs, and more.

From September to April, you may also have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights. Clear, dark skies and suitable weather conditions are needed, so sightings can never be guaranteed.

Whether you prefer outdoor activities, discovering Icelandic culture, or simply enjoying the peaceful surroundings, Siglufjörður offers plenty of opportunities to make the most of your free time.

    Dettagli all'arrivo

    Arrival & Departure

    Arrival in Reykjavík

On the first day of the workcamp, Wednesday, volunteers will be picked up at:

    BSÍ Bus Terminal in Reykjavík.

    Tjarnargata 11, 101 Reykjavík
    Meeting time: 09:00

Please arrive at the meeting point on time. If you think you may be delayed or are unable to reach the meeting point by 09:00, please contact WF Iceland as soon as possible.

We strongly recommend arriving in Iceland at least one day before the first day of your project. This will give you enough time to reach Reykjavík, rest after your journey, and be ready for the workcamp departure the following morning.

    Departure from the Workcamp

On the last day of the program, volunteers will be dropped off at BSÍ Bus Terminal in Reykjavík.

The estimated arrival time at BSÍ is 18:00 or later. The exact time may vary depending on weather, road conditions, traffic, and other unforeseen circumstances.

For this reason, we strongly recommend not booking a flight or other onward transportation for the same evening. We recommend planning your departure for at least one day after the last day of your workcamp.

Please note that any additional accommodation needed before or after the workcamp is not included and must be arranged and paid for by the volunteer.

    Optional Pre-Camp in Reykjavík

For volunteers who would like to arrive earlier and explore Reykjavík before their workcamp, we offer an optional 2-day pre-camp for €150.

The pre-camp is not included in the regular program fee and must be booked separately.

Day 1 – Monday: Arrival in Reykjavík

    • Pick-up at BSÍ Bus Terminal at 17:00
    • Transfer to the pre-camp accommodation
    • Overnight in Reykjavík*

Day 2 – Tuesday: Golden Circle Excursion

    • Full-day Golden Circle excursion
    • Overnight in Reykjavík*

Day 3 – Wednesday: Departure to the Workcamp

    • Departure from Reykjavík to the workcamp accommodation

    * Pre-camp accommodation: The accommodation is located on the outskirts of Reykjavík, approximately 20 minutes by car from the city centre.

    Important: Travelling to Siglufjörður

Please keep in mind that Siglufjörður is a remote destination in North Iceland, approximately 5 hours by car from Reykjavík each way.

The journey from Reykjavík to Siglufjörður can therefore take almost a full day, and the same applies to the return journey. Volunteers should consider the distance when planning their travel before and after the workcamp.

During certain periods, particularly in winter, road and weather conditions can affect travel. Some mountain roads or routes may be temporarily closed because of snow, strong winds, or other adverse weather conditions. This can make the journey longer or, in some cases, temporarily prevent access to the area.

For this reason, we recommend allowing extra time and flexibility when planning your travel to and from Siglufjörður.

Please note: Travel times are approximate and may vary depending on road and weather conditions.
