Overview of the program
The Nepali children are very keen to learn and improve their conversational English to brighten their future and also to be able to speak English. Children and teenagers at schools, adults in villages. Some volunteers teach English to teachers. Many Nepali teachers don’t speak English yet they teach English and need help.
Teaching English as a volunteer will give you the opportunity to teach
students who are eager to learn and improve their abilities in English.
The students will also benefit from cultural exchange and different
teaching techniques.
You will be placed in either a public (government) or private school, depending on the area you wish to work. Your main role will be to teach English, however you may have the opportunity to assist in other school activities such as sports and extra curricular projects.
Generally as a volunteer you will be teaching for 4 to 6hours per day, 6 days a week, to students aged between 6 and 13 years old.
There will be
a permanent English teacher at the school to assist you with teaching
methods, offer advice on dealing with communication barriers and provide
you with suitable curriculum for the classroom. If you are volunteering
during school holidays or exam periods Alliance Nepal will find
alternative activities for you to participate in such as working in an
orphanage.
Volunteering your time abroad to help others is a fantastic experience
that will give you the opportunity to work and live side by side with
local people. You will undoubtedly learn new skills through having to
adjust to new situations and challenge yourself by volunteering in a
developing country.
Typical day
Volunteers will primarily work as English instructors at the local schools and their teaching tasks will consist of:
- Speaking, listening, writing
- Simple vocabulary, simple sentences like greetings, colors, the Alphabet, numbers, time directions
- Very basic grammar
Depending upon the need, volunteers may be asked to assist in other school extra curricular activities like sports. As a unique facet of this placement, the volunteer will have a rare and unique opportunity to witness and participate in traditional rituals.
The overall tasks of our volunteers are:
- Teach English (4-6 hours a day) in the school
- Organizing games, drawing, singing, dancing, and other creative education and extra curricular activities
- Taking kids on educational tours
- Helping kids to do homework, monitor academic progress,
- Other helps on administration
- Help in other activities or programs designed for school children (If any)
Free-time activities
Pokhara is naturally beautiful city. Volunteers could hike and trek around Annapurna area, paragliding and swim on Phewa lake.

Remote villages and tea houses filled with warmly-welcoming and smiling faces serve as daytime and overnight rest areas.

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

There is no need of specific qualification for teaching English project in Nepal. However, volunteer interested to teach the children must have good command of English.

- Transportation from Kathmandu Airport.
- Transport from the Kathmandu to Pokhara.
- Accommodation and main meals during training period and placement.
- Language and cultural information classes.
We provide the bus from pokhara to Kathmandu and volunteers need to arrange the room at Kathmandu for their stay at the end of the program and transport to the airport.
We provide pick up from the airport. Please let us know your flight arrivals and details. We would be happy to wait for you at the airport. We also arrange the accommodation on the arrival day at the hotel. We provide the bus from Pokhara to Kathmandu and volunteers need to arrange the room at Kathmandu for their stay at the end of the program and transport to the airport.
Alliance Nepal manages room/food for volunteer. In most of the cases, volunteer stay with host family where we manage a separate room and Nepali food three times a day.
We provide ur volunteers with breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Good access at the project site
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
The nearest airport is Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu. We assist you to find cheap flights to Nepal.
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Nepal provides security and is a plus to have.
If you are intending to volunteer in Nepal you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Nepal.

Nepal can be visited all year round and we have program throughout the year, with the weather typically being divided into 4 seasons.

Nepal is one of the worlds top destinations for trekking, rafting and an array of other outdoor activities that many volunteers may want to experience. The best times of year to visit and volunteer on teaching activities is from April to February.
