Join us in Ghana and help construct better-quality homes and classrooms for children and their families. Learn how to make bricks from mud and water, before building walls, plastering and painting.
You will join a team of Dream Africa Care
Foundation volunteers and local people constructing and renovating simple
buildings in the local communities.
you will also help with landscaping the surrounding area, painting local schools, and renovating classrooms. In the past, volunteers built schools, library, orphanages and hospitals for rural communities.
In many areas of Ghana,
thousands of families live in inadequate accommodation and children attend
school in crumbling buildings. Our construction project allows them to move to
new, better quality homes and for the children to receive an education in
secure, new classrooms.
The buildings are usually
made from mud bricks that are produced by using a press, some mud and water,
and then left to harden in the sun. Volunteers help in this process and also
with building walls, plastering, and painting. Each building takes an average
of one month to construct but if you and friends are staying for two weeks you
can still be of great help to this project.
This is a great
opportunity to get involved in a rural project and become an integral part of
the local community.
Building work takes place
early in the morning and late in the afternoon to avoid the hot midday sun, so
you'll have plenty of time to get involved in Ghanaian life. Many volunteers
immerse themselves in the local community by helping around the kindergarten
class or playing soccer with some of the school children once the building work
has finished for the day.
An ideal project for short
term volunteers, no skills are required and you are able to make a significant
contribution even you are only staying one week.
Volunteers should bring
gloves, flashlight, and light weight scarf for sun protection or hat, insect
repellent, working boots and water bottle. Please also note, projects and
volunteer roles will vary from community to community.
This project focuses on
the construction and renovation of orphanages, clinics, community centers,
toilet facilities, libraries and building of classrooms (schools), roads and
drainage system and digging of wells. Volunteers also have the opportunity to
meet chiefs and community elders, and learn about the various cultures of the
different communities through drumming, music and dance.
Construction usually start in the morning, you will be working with a group of other volunteers and people from the community. Helping mix concrete, painting, brick laying, plastering, digging, block shaping,
carpentry, steel bending, mortar mixing, etc. You will work from 9am to 2pm in the afternoon. You the the rest of the day to explore the community or help out in some of our other evening projects.
