    Mafanikio is the Founder of Eco-Green School, which has a population of 210 pupils.  The programme aims at developing learning & physical  infrastructures in this school. Mafanikio supports the school through provision of text books, desks, stationary and mentorship of the students.  It is approximately 2 hours from the city of Mombasa. Malindi is on the north coast of Kenya, a tourist destination that boasts of white sands beaches, unique features and historical sites. Seedling is within the township of Malindi. 

    Eco-Green School

    Eco-Green  School is located in Mbogolo village, Malindi constituency, Kilifi County with over 1000 inhabitants whose economic activity is subsistence farming, casual labourer and motor bike business. 

    Background information

    The school is in the heart of the community and enjoys a spacious field with 6 permanent classrooms with six toilets respectively.  The school construction work is still in progress. Currently, there are 5 teachers who teach grade 1-6  respectively. It is in the remote area which is bare with very limited trees but it is slowly opening up.

    Project description
    The volunteers will work together with the school staff and at the same time, will participate in all school and community activities respectively. The volunteers shall also engage in cultural activities organized within and shall learn basic Swahili. They shall live and work together with the local communities while promoting inter-cultural interaction and integration.  Some of the activities include:

    • Teaching Maths, English, Hygiene & Nutrition, Environmental studies, Science and Technology & Physical education
    • Sports activities
    • Community activities
    • Mentorship
    Meals and Accommodation

    The volunteers live in a volunteer house with shared bedrooms and shall prepare their meals which will be provided.  The house has an equipped kitchen, dining, spacious living room & a lounge. Some of the meals include;

    • Tea/coffee
    • Bread
    • Chapati
    • Beans stew
    • Beef stew
    • Chicken
    • Rice
    • pasta
    • fruits of the season
    • Vegetables etc.
    School Location 

    The school is located in Mbogolo village which is about 10 kilometers away from the city where the volunteer house is.  Therefore, there is commuting to and from from Monday to Friday. The mode of transport is mainly motorbikes at a fee of 1.5 euros per day.  However walking is also an option for 1 hour and 20 minutes and running at 1 hour respectively.

    A typical day begins at 7.30 to enable the students complete their homework and do revision since most of them do not have the studying facilities at home. This session in the morning allows them an extra time away from the scheduled time table.

    Trekking at Arabuko Sokoke Forests to spend time in nature.

    Visit to Tsavo National Park, Masai Mara Park or Amboseli Park for nature and wild animals.

    Local Dining to sample diverse culinary

    Community  & cultural engagements

    Take a ride to Kilifi which is an hour away to experience the magical hidden beaches and general city.

    Take a ride to Mombasa which is two hours away to experience the city that is bursting with activities, the ancient swahili culture, the kenyan history of slavery and the old town amongst other things. Taste the masala tea or the fresh coffee brewed blended with ginger while playing chess or drafts with the local!!! The culinary is second to none, its the pride of Kenya!!!

    Home visiting - Home visits give a perspective of our way of life and is important for social interaction and integration within the community. It also brings the spirit of humanity in terms of human relations and connections.

    Afhaal aan de luchthaven op Moi International Airport

    The driver picks the volunteer from the airport.  He holds a placard with the volunteers name on it. Sometimes, they are in contact therefore, they already know each other.


    In the case of arriving from Mombasa, the volunteer is picked from the airport and is taken to the bus station, put in the bus by the driver and is picked in Malindi. It is a smooth transfer and opens the culture and experience of traveling in Africa.  The ride from Mombasa to Malindi is approximately 2.5 hours. Arrivals in Malindi, the pick up is quick and in 10 minutes the volunteers arrive their destination. 

    In the case of Nairobi, the volunteer can either come by road, air or rail.  Either way, he is picked up from the airport, if by bus they are taken to the bus station and put in a bus and are picked up in Malindi.  These buses travel at night and are quite safe too. 

    Train hours are; 8.00 am, 15.00 and 22.00. The most recommended time is 8.00 so that the arrival is at 14.00 and then a shuttle for two hours from Mombasa to Malindi.  There is a pick up at the SGR Mombasa station.

    Which ever airport of arrival, the transfer is coordinated and smooth. 

    Accomodatie

    • The house is old, spacious and cozy and feels home and comfortable. It has 3 bedroom which are shared on the respective gender. Each room is can accommodate 3 people comfortably.
    • Each person is provided with a bed, beddings and a mosquito net and there is a cardboard to put cloths and other personal effects. 
    • The living room has a 6 seater dining table, divani (sofa) and a television set. It is quite spacious, the best space to work or relax in the house. 
    • The kitchen is our favourite room, it has all the basic kitchen appliances and a wide range of spices.  This is where culture interaction happens as the volunteers share experience while cooking and enjoy laughter too!!!
    • There is sufficient water supply and running electricity although sometimes cuts are experienced for a couple of hours or minutes
    • There is a lounge area outside where one can chill with a book or work. The sounds of birds in the morning are sometimes priceless!

    Eten & Drank

    Breakfast includes tea/coffee, bread with butter & jam, assorted fruits of the season (mangoes, pineapples, papaya, oranges, bananas and water melons and avocado)

    Lunch & Dinner comprise of locally available meals such as:

    • Rice,
    • Pasta
    • Beef stew
    • Vegetables
    • Chicken
    • Chapati
    • Beans stew
    • Mukimo
    • Chips/ potato wedges

    Vegetarians are also taken care of and are encouraged to state their preferences in advance in order to organize.

    Gegevens over jouw aankomst

    The commencement of the programme is on week days. It is advisable for the volunteers to come over the weekend so that they can have time to settle and familiarize before they begin their work.

    • The volunteers undergo orientation upon arrival to enable them understand the environment and household rules in order to settle down and get integrated and at the same time, they receive relevant information and are allocated their beds and beddings.
    • They acquire sim cards for effective communication with their families and friends and are also shown all the social amenities within the area.
    • They are allocated their drivers who will be picking them every morning to and from school and for those who prefer to walk /run  are shown the route.
    • In the project site, they undergo two days induction to understand their responsibilities and what is expected of them and what they should also expect.  The first two days, they sit in to observe how things are done and on the second day, they begin to work under supervision until they are completely confident to work un supervised.
