    Om programmet

When volunteering in wildlife and animal protection, it’s important to ensure that the well-being of animals and the focus on species conservation are the top priorities of the project.

South Africa is home to a breathtakingly diverse range of plant and animal life, including 43 species of marine mammals that you can observe in their natural habitat. However, many species are facing the threat of extinction, often due to pollution or overfishing caused by human activity. For example, the white shark is listed as endangered by the WWF, and several whale species are also at risk.

In this marine animal conservation project, you’ll play a crucial role in preserving marine life. Through your volunteer work, you’ll help ensure that these fascinating species are protected for future generations.

Your placement will be with a foundation near Port Elizabeth, dedicated to the protection of endangered marine animals. Located along the Indian Ocean coast, the foundation is situated in the heart of the world-famous Garden Route region. This area offers stunning landscapes, with turquoise bays, untouched sandy beaches, and dense forests. The Indian Ocean is home to a wide variety of marine species, including orcas, white sharks, dolphins, penguins, and sea turtles.

The goal of our project in South Africa is to promote the protection of marine life and the region’s natural environment, as well as to raise awareness about animal and environmental conservation. Additionally, the project focuses on fostering community development and improving local education.

    Typisk dag

As a volunteer in this project, you can get involved in three different areas: animal & nature conservation, education & English teaching at local schools, and research & data collection.

In the field of environmental and nature conservation, you’ll assist with the rescue of seabirds like penguins or the retrieval of stranded marine animals such as whales. You’ll also help relocate sea turtles to protected coastal areas when they come ashore to lay their eggs. In addition, you’ll participate in beach clean-ups and help plant trees to protect the coastline from erosion.

In the education and awareness area, you’ll contribute to an environmental protection program at local preschools and primary schools. You’ll educate the students on animal and environmental conservation topics, using engaging activities like plays to raise awareness. You can also assist in teaching English.

In the research area, you’ll join a team of marine researchers and go out to sea on a boat to observe whales and dolphins. You’ll photograph them and collect data on their populations, which you’ll later input into an online database. You’ll also analyze the water quality of surrounding rivers and the ocean. To monitor seabird populations and study their behavior, you might tag the birds with identification numbers.

In addition to these core activities, you may also assist with recreational activities and guided tours, working with international guests. For students, there’s the option to undertake a small research project of your own, collaborating with a local researcher.

Your exact tasks will depend on the season, weather conditions, and the needs of the project and will be discussed with you on-site. In case of bad weather, indoor activities will take place. Typically, you’ll work from Monday to Friday, around 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

White beach, crystal clear water and the Tsitsikamma Mountains; there’s a reason why Plettenberg Bay is the so-called district of Eden. The picturesque scenery lies on the Indian Ocean. East of the city Plettenberg Bay, you can see the jungle and coastal areas. Even the Robberg peninsulas on the western side are not far away. As a nature reserve, they are a true paradise for their inhabitants, a seal colony!

You will also see one of the largest breeding colonies of seagulls on the South African coast. Until 1920 this was the location for a whaling station. Today the big sea creatures are at home there, especially during their mating season between July and December. In the surf not far off the coast, you can also discover dolphins. If you go for a hike along the coastal paths, you can stop at Keurboomstrand or visit the landlocked Monkeyland. There is also a 128 m long suspension bridge that attracts many backpackers.

During your time volunteering in Port Elizabeth, you'll have plenty of opportunities to explore your surroundings during your free time and evenings. Right near your accommodation, you can shop at the local mall, relax on the beach, or take advantage of various recreational activities. From abseiling and skydiving to scuba diving, game drives, horseback riding, and even bungee jumping, there’s something for everyone!

If you're curious about the history of Port Elizabeth, be sure to visit the Donkin Reserve in the city center. This spot was created by Governor Sir Rufane Donkin in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth. The lighthouse and pyramid on the square serve as a tribute to her, and the inscription on the pyramid reads: “To the memory of one of the most perfect of human beings, who has given her name to the town below.” Isn’t that a beautiful and romantic story?

One day, you’ll definitely want to visit Plettenberg Bay – it’s a place you can't miss! With its white sandy beaches, clear turquoise water, and the breathtaking Tsitsikamma Mountains, it’s no wonder this area is called Eden. The stunning scenery stretches along the Indian Ocean, with lush forests and scenic coastal areas to the east, and the Robberg Peninsula to the west, home to a seal colony in a protected nature reserve.

You’ll also get the chance to see one of the largest seagull breeding colonies along the South African coast. This area was once a whaling station until 1920, but now it’s a peaceful spot where whales are particularly active during their mating season between July and December. You can also spot dolphins in the waves. For a scenic hike, walk the coastal trails and stop at Keurboomstrand or visit Monkeyland inland, where you’ll find a 128-meter-long suspension bridge that attracts many backpackers.

    Overnatting

    ChatGPT:

The volunteer house is located about three kilometers from your project site. Depending on the season, there are between one and twelve volunteers staying there. However, you will never share a room with more than three other volunteers. There’s a laundry room on-site, where Teliswa, the housekeeper, takes care of the laundry several times a week. She also prepares a delicious dinner for the volunteers five times a week. You’ll have access to basic food staples, so you can either make your own packed lunch or cook together, depending on the day’s activities. Breakfast is also included in your meals.

There are plenty of restaurants around your accommodation, but you’ll need to cover the cost of eating out on your own. A shopping center is also within walking distance. On weekends and evenings, rental cars and taxis (ranging from economy to premium class) are available, so you can easily explore and participate in various recreational activities.
