    Indonesia is home to some of the world’s most biodiverse coral reefs, yet many sites around Bali and Nusa Penida face increasing pressure from storms, warming seas, and growing tourism. Healthy reefs are essential here - supporting ecosystems, coastal protection, and local livelihoods.

    Project Laut was established to deliver long-term, hands-on conservation, not short-term or surface-level experiences. Over the past five years, we’ve built and maintained 1,500+ coral restoration structures, prioritising site quality, monitoring, and ecological decision-making over quantity. Our restoration site operates independently from daily dive tourism, ensuring conservation work is guided by reef needs rather than visitor demand.

    This internship is structured around three core pillars - coral reef restoration, REEF fish surveys, and sea turtle identification - giving participants real field experience while contributing directly to monitoring, data quality, and site management. It’s designed for divers who want to learn properly, work responsibly, and leave with skills that reflect genuine conservation work.


    A Conservation Internship Built on Real Impact (3 Pillars)

    I. Coral Reef Restoration

    Gain hands-on experience on our active coral restoration site, working alongside our marine scientists. You’ll learn how to collect corals of opportunity, attach fragments to restoration structures, carry out maintenance dives, and document the return of marine life as the reef ecosystem recovers. Before certification level, participants receive a Project Laut Coral Restoration Diploma, recognising practical experience in coral reef restoration and fragment attachment.

    For those staying four weeks or longer, and once you’ve built sufficient local diving experience, you can progress to the official SSI Coral Reef Restoration Specialty certification - a programme we authored and published through SSI. This advanced certification involves multiple restoration dives in dynamic conditions, making it both challenging and deeply rewarding, and reflects real competence in working on a live restoration site rather than a single, simulated experience.

    II. REEF Fish Surveys

    Proud to be REEF’s official partner in Indonesia, you’ll train in the Roving Diver Method, learn and study the Top-50 reef fish species, and submit quality-checked fish surveys. This is one of people’s favourite things to do here: within the Coral Triangle the biodiversity is extraordinary, and Nusa Penida truly has everything if you take the time to look closely.

    Divers can progress their REEF Surveyor level through supervised logs and method quizzes, administered on site by our REEF Expert Surveyor. With focus and consistency, those staying for at least four weeks can realistically expect to progress to Level 3 Surveyor (intermediate level).

    III. Turtle Identification
    Participate in sea turtle photo-ID focused on the endangered hawksbill turtles of Nusa Penida. You’ll learn how to photograph key identification features, measure carapace length, upload sightings, and process data using I3S pattern-recognition software. To date, our team has identified 500+ individual hawksbill turtles, creating one of the most comprehensive local datasets on turtle movements, site use, and the impacts of tourism, directly supporting long-term monitoring and conservation of this critically threatened species.


    Your role develops progressively as your experience increases:
    • 2 weeks: Focus on coral reef restoration and coral identification, learning core skills such as selecting corals of opportunity, fragment attachment, and basic fragmentation, with an introduction to sea turtle monitoring or fish identification.

    • 4 weeks: Rotate through all three pillars, with increased focus on fish identification and REEF surveys while building the diving techniques needed for in-water restoration and turtle identification work.

    • 6+ weeks: Take on greater responsibility, with surveys carrying higher weight in official databases, and support in-water coral attachments, structure maintenance, site mapping, and reef health assessments.


    Included SSI Ecology Courses with Certification

    Certifications are tied to duration and participation:

    • 2 weeks: SSI Coral Identification

    • 4 weeks: SSI Coral Identification + SSI Fish Identification + SSI Sea Turtle Ecology

    • 6+ weeks: all of the above plus SSI Coral Reef Restoration (authored by Project Laut, 2024)


    PREREQUISITES
    • Advanced diver with 40 logged dives

    • If you need training, we offer:

      • Open Water: €300, 4 days, 4 dives

      • Advanced: €260, 3 days, 5 dives
        These should be scheduled before your internship start so you join fieldwork confidently.

      • If you did not train with us and have fewer than 40 logged dives, a 2-day Scuba Skills Update (€150) is required to ensure you’re fully prepared for local conditions. Nusa Penida’s currents and fragile dive sites demand strong foundational skills, and this update helps protect both the environment and dive safety. This requirement aligns with SSI standards.

      • Participants must be able to carry a gear bag on and off the boat, ascend stairs, and work outdoors, so a suitable physical condition is necessary.


    Do volunteers need to bring special equipment?

    If you own a total diving system, we recommend bringing it with you. Please let us know in advance which equipment you have and the models you use. Any items you don’t own can be rented on site.

    At a minimum, please bring your own mask to ensure it fits well and is comfortable for extended time in the water.

    On-site rental:
    • Dive equipment, including BC and regulator, is available for €50 per week
    • Dive computers are available for rent (pricing varies by model)

    Recommended:
    Bringing your own laptop or tablet is helpful for data entry and workshops, though not mandatory.

    All restoration tools, survey slates, species cards, and turtle ID materials are provided by Project Laut.


    Who Will Volunteers Be Working With?

    You’ll work alongside a motivated team of fellow volunteers and long-stay Divemaster interns (some staying up to six months), as well as our instructors and marine scientists. Daily guests are also part of the experience, creating a dynamic and social working environment.

    • Build transferable skills for the future, including survey methods, species identification, data collection, and coral restoration techniques.


    Accommodation

    Accommodation is not included. We share contacts for trusted homestays and partners we’ve worked with for years, and once confirmed we’ll connect you via WhatsApp to arrange discounted intern rates. All recommended options include hot water, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning, and accommodation is booked and paid for directly by you. From Summer 2026, low-cost on-site dormitory accommodation will also be available.

    08:00 – Check-in at the Training Centre

    The day starts with a group briefing covering weather, sea conditions, dive sites, roles, and safety.
    Depending on project needs, the focus is set for the day — fish surveys, turtle identification, or coral reef restoration.
    Gear is checked and loaded, and slates, species cards, cameras, and restoration materials are prepared.

    08:30 – Morning Dive / Project Dive

    Activities vary by day and conditions:

    • Survey-focused days:
      Explore Nusa Penida’s reefs while conducting REEF fish identification surveys or sea turtle photo-ID patrols.
      Buddy roles are assigned (observer, slate/data, camera).

    • Restoration-focused days:
      Travel to the coral restoration site. Wet and dry teams are assigned, and in-water work begins where appropriate.

    10:00 – Surface Interval

    Hydration, snacks, and initial log notes.
    Quick debrief to review observations, identify species photographed, or adjust the plan for the second session.

    11:00 – Second Dive / Continued Project Work

    • Survey days:
      Visit a second site in the east or north of Nusa Penida for continued fish surveys or turtle monitoring.

    • Restoration days:
      Continue coral restoration work, including structure inspection, cleaning, coral fragment attachment, tie checks, and basic site surveys.
      Dry teams support from the boat or shore by preparing fragments, repairing or assembling structures (spiders), and organising tools.
      Teams rotate roles over time so everyone gains experience both underwater and topside.

    ~13:00–14:00 – Return to the Training Centre

    Rinse and stow gear.
    Lunch break followed by a group debrief and task wrap-up.

    14:00 – Classroom & Data Session

    Afternoons are dedicated to processing and reviewing the day’s work:

    • Turtle ID: selecting clear screenshots from GoPro footage, running I3S matches, and logging new individuals or resightings with metadata.

    • Fish surveys: confirming species with buddies, reviewing footage for uncertain IDs, and submitting surveys to REEF.org with quality control.

    • Restoration: updating site notes, photo logs, and maintenance records, and discussing next priorities.

    16:30–17:00 – End of Day

    Set goals for the following day and confirm meeting times.
    Evenings are free and often spent sharing dinner with interns, exploring the island, or watching the sunset at a nearby beach.

    • Daily activities adapt to sea conditions, site needs, and participant experience.

    • On rough sea days, in-water work may be replaced with dry conservation sessions, such as structure preparation, photomonitoring review, or skills workshops.

    • Conservation priorities always guide planning — quality, safety, and long-term impact come first.

    Program Dates

    Programs run year-round with rolling start dates, except during Christmas week. Each program begins on Tuesday and runs from Tuesday to Saturday.

    Arrival in Bali

    Please plan your flights to arrive at Denpasar International Airport (DPS). For a smooth start, we recommend arriving on Nusa Penida at least one day before your program begins.

    Transport & Accommodation

    We offer optional transport add-ons to make arrival simple, including airport pick-up in Bali and boat transfers to Nusa Penida.

    For accommodation, we work closely with a range of trusted local homestays that offer affordable weekly and long-term stays. This gives you flexibility to choose a place that suits your budget and comfort level while supporting the local community.

    If you choose not to book transport through us, you will need to arrange all transport independently, including airport transfers, boat tickets, and island pick-up with your accommodation.

    We are happy to recommend partner homestays offering simple, comfortable rooms and good long-term rates. Most are locally run and within easy reach of the Training Centre. Details and recommendations are shared once your booking is confirmed.

    Getting Around on Nusa Penida

    Most volunteers get around by renting a scooter. Scooter rentals are widely available through homestays and bungalows across the island.
