Project Details

Lao Conservation Trust for Wildlife (LCTW) works with authorities and individuals to rescue, rehabilitate and release as many animals as possible.

We are Lao PDR's first multi species rescue, conservation and education nonprofit; uniquely placed to address the crisis driving the rapid decline of many endangered species. Our mission is to eradicate the illegal wildlife trade and improve wildlife education and welfare in Lao PDR.

Founded in 2018,  Lao Conservation Trust for Wildlife (LCTW) took over the national zoo and has begun turning it into a wildlife rescue center.

We run a multi-species wildlife center in Asia's hotspot for trafficking, just north of Lao PDR's capital Vientiane. We work with authorities to investigate wildlife crime and rescue animals of any species, with an aim to rehabilitate and release wherever possible.

Any animals deemed unsuitable for release are offered world-class care and refuge in our wildlife sanctuary.

Our goal for all rescued animals is to rehabilitate and release them back into protected areas in Lao PDR. Many of the species that come to us are endangered and are on the of brink extinction, so every rescue counts.

However, one of the tragic realities of the illegal wildlife trade is that the damage done to animals is often irreversible and the health or behavioural problems caused,  often mean the animals can never be released back into the wild. This is where our wildlife sanctuary and education projects come in. We work closely with our volunteers to support our mission and grow our impact, offering ethical no-animal-contact experiences, ensuring that wildlife stays wild in instinct.

One of the most amazing things about LCTW is that our work is so multi-faceted, ranging from advocacy to on the ground rescue work and we want you to join us.

Social Impact

Rescuing wildlife from the illegal wildlife trade is at the forefront of our mission. Lao PDR is a landlocked country: predominantly rural, mountainous and bordered by 5 Asian countries. All these factors contribute to making Lao PDR a major highway for illegal wildlife trafficking. Animals are trafficked from as far as Africa to travel through Lao PDR, often undetected by authorities and destined for neighboring China or Vietnam.

Our rescue team operates a 24/7 anonymous hotline and are ready to jump into action at any time of the day or night. We work closely with the Lao government to accept wildlife confiscated by authorities and can rescue it from anywhere in Lao PDR. By having a reliable all-taxa rescue facility available, officials are able to swiftly confiscate illegally captured wildlife.

If an animal is suitable for release we contact the national protected area authorities and research the best possible locations for release, before setting out to give the animal a second chance to live a healthy life in the wild. So far, we have worked closely with three different national protected areas but we have plans to include many more.

At our wildlife sanctuary, which covers 100 acres, we have 390 animals across 58 different species, 213 of which, are threatened by extinction. Last year we rescued 55 animals and were able to release 18 animals back into the wild. At our site we have 67 local staff and 8 expat staff who work closely with our volunteers, without whom none of this would be possible.

We recognize that rescuing and releasing animals is not the solution to the illegal wildlife trade and animals will continue to be poached from the wild. To combat this we help to educate local communities on wildlife conservation and the dangers of wildlife trafficking. In our local community we have lessons where volunteers can come and help us teach kids about wildlife and what we do here at the project, but we also hold workshops with provincial government departments related to wildlife crime. This education program is vital to creating a sustainable force, at local and national level, to halt wildlife crime for generations to come.
