    Sobre o programa

In many underserved communities across Uganda, classrooms are full—but teachers and resources are limited. Children are eager to learn, full of dreams and potential, yet they need support, encouragement, and global connection to thrive.

Behind every desk is a child who wants to read, write, and build a better future. But overcrowded classrooms, limited materials, and teacher shortages make it difficult.

    By volunteering, you will:

    • Support local teachers in delivering lessons

    • Give students individual attention they rarely receive

    • Inspire confidence, curiosity, and hope

    • Become a role model and global mentor

Your time and care can change the direction of a child’s life.

You don’t need to be a professional teacher—just bring your passion, patience, and willingness to help.

    You may:

    • Assist in teaching English, math, science, or creative subjects

    • Help with reading, writing, and classroom activities

    • Organize games, arts, and educational clubs

    • Support school organization and daily routines

    • Share your culture and learn from theirs

Every small effort you give creates big, meaningful change.

    We welcome:

    • Students and graduates (education or non-education backgrounds)

    • Gap year travelers seeking purpose

    • Teachers and aspiring educators

    • Groups, friends, and university teams

    • Anyone with a heart for children and community impact

No prior experience is required—just commitment and compassion.

Volunteering in Kampala is more than service—it’s a journey of growth, connection, and discovery.

    During your stay, you will:

    • Experience the vibrant culture and warm hospitality of Uganda

    • Explore local markets, music, and traditions

    • Enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Africa—from green landscapes to Lake views

    • Build friendships with fellow volunteers and local communities

    • Gain confidence, leadership skills, and global perspective

This program is perfect for a gap year, career break, or meaningful travel experience.

Many schools are doing their best with very little. Without support, children risk falling behind—not because they lack ability, but because they lack opportunity.

Your presence can help change that story.

    Wildlife

The wildlife of Uganda is composed of its flora and fauna. Uganda has a wide variety of different habitats, including mountains, hills, tropical rainforest, woodland, freshwater lakes, swamps and savanna with scattered clumps of trees. The country has a biodiverse flora and fauna reflecting this range of habitats and is known for its primates, including gorillas and chimpanzees. There are ten national parks and thirteen wildlife reserves; some 345 species of mammal and 1020 species of bird have been recorded in the country.

Nice places to visit in Uganda

    • Murchison Falls
    • Lake Victoria
    • Jinja, Start of the Nile River
    • Ssese Islands
    • Nyero Rock Paintings
    • Kasubi Tombs
    • Ndere Centre
    • Owino Market
    • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and many more.

Uganda tourist places, just like the country itself, seem to be gifted by the choicest of nature’s bounties. This is the precise reason why Uganda is referred to as the ‘Pearl of Africa’. Be it its rare primate species, forests that have survived the Ice Age, ancient landmarks, and stupendous landscape, Uganda is certainly a once-in-a-lifetime kind of place. Uganda tourist spots range from national parks that protect the rarest of wildlife species like Queen Elizabeth National Park, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Semliki National Park to cultural and religious sites like the Kasubi Royal Tombs, Martyrs Shrine, Bahai Temple, and the Nyero Rock paintings to name a few.

Uganda’s landscape is unlike anything else that you will experience. It includes the fascinating Equator, the longest river in the world, and the second-largest freshwater lake in the world. All these places to visit in Uganda offer unforgettable experiences like rafting on the Nile, quad biking, boat safaris, and so much more. Add to this the opportunity to interact with some of the most elusive tribes in the world like the Batwa pygmies, Baganda, Bakiga, etc., and experiencing their ancient traditions that are still practiced today. So head over to Uganda on your next vacation to savour the famous African wilderness, warmth, and colours that will leave you with memories for a lifetime.

    N/B
There can occasionally be delays with luggage. We have observed that some volunteers have experienced significant waits for their bags, sometimes up to three days. To prepare for such situations, we recommend that you pack essential items and a few clothes to change for 2 - 3 days in your carry-on bag. While luggage delays are not common, they can occur, and we want to help you avoid any unnecessary expenses, such as having to purchase clothing while waiting for your luggage.

    Preparation for Arrival

Engaging in volunteer work in Uganda through UCESCO Africa promises to be an exciting and transformative experience. You will have the opportunity to connect with new friendships and confront various challenges, all while immersing yourself in a different culture. To fully benefit from this experience, it is advisable to ensure that you are adequately prepared, both physically and mentally.

Kampala (Uganda’s capital city) has a very active but informal transport system, meaning it is fast, cheap, and flexible—but it requires knowing the safest options.

Here is a clear, practical guide for transportation, accessibility, taxes (fares), and safety:

🚖 1. Main Modes of Transport in Kampala

    🏍️ Boda Bodas (Motorcycle taxis)

    1. The fastest way to move through heavy traffic
    1. Available everywhere, even in narrow roads

    2. Best for short distances (1–5 km)

Cost: ~1,000–5,000 UGX per trip depending on distance

✔ Best option: SafeBoda app / Uber Boda / Bolt Moto (safer, tracked, fixed fares)

    🚐 Matatus (Shared minibus taxis)

    1. The cheapest public transport
    1. Runs on fixed routes but no strict schedule

    2. Departs when full

    3. Can be crowded but very common

    Cost: ~500–3,000 UGX per ride

✔ Best for: Budget travel and longer city routes
⚠ Watch out for pickpockets in crowded areas

🚗 Special Hire Taxis / Ride Apps

    1. Private cars you hire for personal trips
    1. Includes Uber, Bolt, Faras, Safe Car

    2. More comfortable and safer than matatus

Cost: ~10,000–100,000 UGX depending on distance

✔ Best for: Airport transfers, night travel, business travel

    🚌 Buses (City & intercity)

    • Larger and more structured than matatus

    • More predictable routes but less frequent

    • Good for long-distance or main routes

    🛣️ 2. Accessibility in Kampala

    • Matatus have high steps and narrow doors

    • Boda bodas are not accessible for mobility needs

    • ✔ Best accessible option: private car / ride-hailing apps

👉 Kampala is improving, but it is still not fully disability-friendly in public transport.

💰 3. “Taxes” / Transport Fares (Important Clarification)

In Kampala, “taxi” usually means minibus (matatu) or special hire car, not government tax.

    Typical fares:

    • Boda boda: 1,000–5,000 UGX

    • Matatu: 500–3,000 UGX

    • Special hire (Uber/Bolt): 10,000+ UGX depending on distance

💡 Fares are often negotiated or dynamic, especially for boda bodas and special hires.

🔐 4. Safest Ways to Move Around Kampala🥇 Safest overall options

    • Uber / Bolt / Faras / Safe Car (car rides)

    • SafeBoda / Uber Boda (motorbikes with tracking)

    🥈 Moderate safety

    • Matatus (daytime only, avoid rush confusion)

🧭 5. Best Travel Strategy (Recommended)

    For visitors or volunteers:

✔ Daytime → SafeBoda or Uber
✔ Long distances / luggage → Uber or Bolt car
✔ Budget travel → Matatus (with locals guiding you)
    ✔ Night travel → ONLY ride-hailing cars

    🌍 6. Simple Summary

    Kampala is:

    • 🚀 Fast-moving but traffic-heavy

    • 💸 Very affordable transport system

    • 🏍️ Dominated by boda bodas

    • 🚗 Increasingly digital with Uber/Bolt apps
