    About the Program

Ghanaian law follows Common Law, which is based on the British system. Each day is different with new and interesting cases coming through and thus neither we nor the Centre can say exactly what you will be doing daily. However expect to deal with different tasks from day to day.

You’ll be given opportunities to have a case or two of your own where you will interview clients, write letters and notifications concerning the cases or have appointments, for example, at Court.

This is a great opportunity to gain invaluable insight into human rights through interesting cases and by taking on a wide variety of tasks. The work will undoubtedly broaden your horizons and open you up to new points of view and passions.
There will be opportunities to get involved in current legal issues, both through dealing directly with clients and researching broader cases. You will be able to learn how to deal with clients and get an insight into everyday life in a legal office.

The work is suitable to all who have a general interest in human rights and are willing to work hard and dedicate their time to improving the lives of others.

    Location
Ghana is a peaceful and welcoming country; Ghana satisfies one's appetite for both modern and traditional life. Its wide valleys, low-lying coastal plains, and thick rainforests resound with the beat of traditional rituals, while her cities glow and vibrate with all the bustle of the modern world. The Ghanaians are the friendliest people in West Africa: warm, proud yet humble with a contagious and calming sense of funniness.

Ghana is hot. It is always hot. What’s more, it's always humid. Humidity usually lingers between 95 and 100 percent. The rainy season lasts from mid-June to mid-November - sometimes. The rain provides a little respite from the intense heat, but temperatures will still be in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. The south of the country experiences the heaviest rainfall during September.

    Dia típico

You’ll start each day with breakfast with your host family. Get dressed in semi-formal, conservative clothing before heading off in a tro-tro or shared taxi. On your first day, your supervisor will accompany you to ensure you know your way around.

Your day will start at 8am and you’ll finish up at 4pm, Monday to Friday. However, your hours may be longer if you’re doing outreach work. You’ll get an hour each day for lunch.

On an average day, you’ll arrive at the office and meet up with your supervisors before heading to a community outreach. At the outreach, you’ll interview community members, collect data, and raise awareness through educational talks. After returning to the office around midday, you’ll review the information you collected. Once you have analyzed the information, you and the human rights staff will be better able to assist and advise community members.

In the afternoons, you can use you time to conduct independent research for current initiatives. You can also plan presentations for educational campaigns, attend meetings, or assist with project planning for future outreaches.

Once you are done for the day, you can spend time getting to know your host family. Over the weekends, you can explore the beautiful countryside and learn about the slave trade at one of the many national museums. You’ll also have the chance to visit Cape Coast and walk through the old fishing town or relax on the beach.
