    Project Laut’s Conservation Internship

Indonesia is home to some of the world’s most biodiverse coral reefs, yet many sites around Bali and Nusa Penida face increasing pressure from storms, warming seas, and growing tourism. Healthy reefs are essential here - supporting ecosystems, coastal protection, and local livelihoods.

Project Laut was established to deliver long-term, hands-on conservation, not short-term or surface-level experiences. Over the past five years, we’ve built and maintained 1,500+ coral restoration structures, prioritising site quality, monitoring, and ecological decision-making over quantity. Our restoration site operates independently from daily dive tourism, ensuring conservation work is guided by reef needs rather than visitor demand.

This internship is structured around three core pillars - coral reef restoration, REEF fish surveys, and sea turtle identification - giving participants real field experience while contributing directly to monitoring, data quality, and site management. It’s designed for divers who want to learn properly, work responsibly, and leave with skills that reflect genuine conservation work.

A Conservation Internship Built on Real Impact (3 Pillars)

    I. Coral Reef Restoration

Gain hands-on experience on our active coral restoration site, working alongside our marine scientists. You’ll learn how to collect corals of opportunity, attach fragments to restoration structures, carry out maintenance dives, and document the return of marine life as the reef ecosystem recovers. Before certification level, participants receive a Project Laut Coral Restoration Diploma, recognising practical experience in coral reef restoration and fragment attachment.

For those staying four weeks or longer, and once you’ve built sufficient local diving experience, you can progress to the official SSI Coral Reef Restoration Specialty certification - a programme we authored and published through SSI. This advanced certification involves multiple restoration dives in dynamic conditions, making it both challenging and deeply rewarding, and reflects real competence in working on a live restoration site rather than a single, simulated experience.

    II. REEF Fish Surveys

Proud to be REEF’s official partner in Indonesia, you’ll train in the Roving Diver Method, learn and study the Top-50 reef fish species, and submit quality-checked fish surveys. This is one of people’s favourite things to do here: within the Coral Triangle the biodiversity is extraordinary, and Nusa Penida truly has everything if you take the time to look closely.

Divers can progress their REEF Surveyor level through supervised logs and method quizzes, administered on site by our REEF Expert Surveyor. With focus and consistency, those staying for at least four weeks can realistically expect to progress to Level 3 Surveyor (intermediate level).

    III. Turtle Identification
Participate in sea turtle photo-ID focused on the endangered hawksbill turtles of Nusa Penida. You’ll learn how to photograph key identification features, measure carapace length, upload sightings, and process data using I3S pattern-recognition software. To date, our team has identified 500+ individual hawksbill turtles, creating one of the most comprehensive local datasets on turtle movements, site use, and the impacts of tourism, directly supporting long-term monitoring and conservation of this critically threatened species.

Your role develops progressively as your experience increases:
    • 2 weeks: Focus on coral reef restoration and coral identification, learning core skills such as selecting corals of opportunity, fragment attachment, and basic fragmentation, with an introduction to sea turtle monitoring or fish identification.

    • 4 weeks: Rotate through all three pillars, with increased focus on fish identification and REEF surveys while building the diving techniques needed for in-water restoration and turtle identification work.

    • 6+ weeks: Take on greater responsibility, with surveys carrying higher weight in official databases, and support in-water coral attachments, structure maintenance, site mapping, and reef health assessments.

Included SSI Ecology Courses with Certification

Certifications are tied to duration and participation:

    • 2 weeks: SSI Coral Identification

    • 4 weeks: SSI Coral Identification + SSI Fish Identification + SSI Sea Turtle Ecology

    • 6+ weeks: all of the above plus SSI Coral Reef Restoration (authored by Project Laut, 2024)

    PREREQUISITES
    • Advanced diver with 40 logged dives

    • If you need training, we offer:

      • Open Water: €300, 4 days, 4 dives

      • Advanced: €260, 3 days, 5 dives
These should be scheduled before your internship start so you join fieldwork confidently.

      • If you did not train with us and have fewer than 40 logged dives, a 2-day Scuba Skills Update (€150) is required to ensure you’re fully prepared for local conditions. Nusa Penida’s currents and fragile dive sites demand strong foundational skills, and this update helps protect both the environment and dive safety. This requirement aligns with SSI standards.

      • Participants must be able to carry a gear bag on and off the boat, ascend stairs, and work outdoors, so a suitable physical condition is necessary.

Do volunteers need to bring special equipment?

If you own a total diving system, we recommend bringing it with you. Please let us know in advance which equipment you have and the models you use. Any items you don’t own can be rented on site.

At a minimum, please bring your own mask to ensure it fits well and is comfortable for extended time in the water.

    On-site rental:
    • Dive equipment, including BC and regulator, is available for €50 per week
    • Dive computers are available for rent (pricing varies by model)

    Recommended:
Bringing your own laptop or tablet is helpful for data entry and workshops, though not mandatory.

All restoration tools, survey slates, species cards, and turtle ID materials are provided by Project Laut.

Who Will Volunteers Be Working With?

You’ll work alongside a motivated team of fellow volunteers and long-stay Divemaster interns (some staying up to six months), as well as our instructors and marine scientists. Daily guests are also part of the experience, creating a dynamic and social working environment.

What Do We Expect from Volunteers?
    • Put safety first at all times, both in and out of the water.

    • Be reliable and professional, including showing up prepared, on time, and ready to contribute.

    • Follow guidance and procedures to ensure high-quality restoration work and reliable data.

What You Can Expect from Us
    • Learn through high-quality training with structured workshops, clear briefings, and meaningful debriefs that support real learning and progress.

    • Take part in hands-on conservation through active coral restoration, directly supporting local restoration efforts.

    • Train in a professional learning environment with small group sizes, close mentoring, and a steep learning curve.

    • Connect with passionate, like-minded people from around the world, building friendships through shared experiences above and below the water.

    • Build transferable skills for the future, including survey methods, species identification, data collection, and coral restoration techniques.

    Accommodation

Accommodation is not included. We share contacts for trusted homestays and partners we’ve worked with for years, and once confirmed we’ll connect you via WhatsApp to arrange discounted intern rates. All recommended options include hot water, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning, and accommodation is booked and paid for directly by you. From Summer 2026, low-cost on-site dormitory accommodation will also be available.
