    Sobre o programa

    Kisenyi Street-Connected Children Program

MDU works with street-connected children in Kisenyi, one of the largest slum communities in Kampala. According to government estimates, as many as 15,000 children ages 7–17, mostly boys, live on the streets of Kampala.

Twice a week, MDU staff and volunteers gather a group of street-connected boys and bring them to the program site. We typically work with 30–50 boys during each program. Many of these children have left home because of mistreatment, extreme poverty, or the loss of their parents. Life on the streets can expose them to sleep deprivation, malnutrition, disease, violence, and abuse as they struggle to survive.

At the program, the boys receive counseling, a nutritious meal, medical care, and opportunities to play games, dance, and simply enjoy being children in a safe and supportive environment.

Because of the difficult conditions in which they live, many boys arrive with wounds, illnesses, and infections. MDU staff and volunteers provide medical treatment during the program and arrange follow-up care at a nearby clinic when necessary.

The ultimate goal of the program is resettlement. Whenever possible, MDU works to reconnect children with their families. When returning home is not an option, MDU works to identify other safe and supportive living arrangements.

MDU also has a sponsorship program that provides children with opportunities to attend school and receive an education. Through healthcare, counseling, education, nutrition, and family support, MDU works to give these children the hope, care, and opportunity to build a safer and brighter future.

MDU Weekly Volunteer ProgramsMedical Outreach — Tuesdays & Thursdays

During our medical outreach programs, we bring free healthcare directly to communities with limited or no access to medical services. Patients are screened for HIV, hCG (pregnancy), and malaria, and our medical team treats a variety of illnesses and infections, including URIs, UTIs, STIs, gastrointestinal infections, skin infections, and wounds.

We provide families with mosquito nets to help prevent future malaria infections and distribute Mama Kits to expectant mothers. In many healthcare facilities, essential delivery supplies are not provided, and pregnant women may be turned away if they arrive without them, putting both mother and baby at risk. Each Mama Kit contains essential supplies needed to support a safe and hygienic delivery.

We also distribute reusable sanitary pads to girls and young women, helping them stay in school, work, and participate more fully in their communities.

Every child who attends our outreach receives deworming medication and Vitamin A, both important for healthy growth and development.

All treatment, medications, testing, and medical supplies are provided free of charge.

Our medical outreach team includes MDU doctors, nurses, laboratory staff, support staff, members of the local communities, and volunteers from around the world. Every outreach provides a unique and rewarding opportunity to provide care and make a meaningful difference.

    Women’s Empowerment — Wednesday Mornings

Once a week, female volunteers, together with the MDU social worker, counsel and support a group of young women. Topics may include hygiene, women’s health, relationships, personal development, and other issues important to their lives and futures.

Volunteers may also assist with vocational training, leadership development, mentorship, and other activities that encourage women to build confidence, independence, and sustainable opportunities.

Kisenyi Program — Mondays & Wednesday Afternoons

MDU works with street-connected children in Kisenyi, one of the largest slum communities in Kampala. According to government estimates, as many as 15,000 children between the ages of 7 and 17, mostly boys, live on the streets of Kampala.

Twice a week, MDU staff and volunteers gather a group of street-connected boys and bring them to the program site. The children receive counseling, a nutritious meal, medical care, and opportunities to play games and participate in positive activities.

Because of the difficult conditions in which they live, the boys often arrive with wounds, illnesses, and infections. MDU staff and volunteers provide treatment during the program and arrange follow-up care at a nearby clinic when necessary.

The ultimate goal of the program is resettlement. Whenever possible, MDU works to reconnect children with their families or identify other safe options to keep them protected and supported.

MDU also has a sponsorship program that provides children with opportunities to attend school and receive an education, helping them work toward a safer and brighter future.

School Visits, Clinic Visits, Home Visits & Excursions — Fridays

Fridays provide volunteers with opportunities to experience additional aspects of the communities we serve through school visits, clinic visits, home visits, and local excursions.

These experiences allow volunteers to connect with local families, students, healthcare providers, and community members while gaining a deeper understanding of daily life and culture in Uganda.

    Free Time & Excursions

During your free time, there are many exciting activities and experiences to enjoy! Many of our volunteers take advantage of extended weekends to explore more of Uganda, including:

    • Go on safari and experience Uganda’s incredible wildlife.

    • Go gorilla trekking and see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

    • Enjoy adventure water sports and other outdoor activities.

All excursions and activities are at the volunteer’s own expense. However, they are arranged through our trusted local partners to help ensure competitive pricing, safety, and a memorable experience.

Because of our close proximity to Kampala, volunteers also have plenty of opportunities to explore the city, visit local craft markets, sample authentic Ugandan cuisine, and attend local events, including soccer games.

We encourage volunteers to take advantage of their weekends to explore Uganda and experience its incredible culture, people, food, wildlife, and natural beauty. Our team is happy to help volunteers arrange trips, transportation, and activities.
