Since its inception the Wildlife Rescue Centre has given shelter to 1000’s of wild animals. Many of these animals are rehabilitated and released back to the wild. Those that cannot be released are provided with shelter for the rest of their lives. The Wildlife Rescue Centre is the perfect place for volunteering with animals. Enthusiastic and passionate volunteers are required to assist with the general upkeep of the project throughout the year. With us, you will have the amazing opportunity to volunteer in Thailand, working with animals and helping us to care for a wide variety of rescued wildlife. Thailand has rich, biological diversity. However, sadly increasingly, human pressures such as over exploitation, habitat loss and habitat degradation, are pushing many of Thailand creatures to the brink of extinction. Young gibbons, macaques, lorises, bears and other wild animals are commonly illegally poached from the wild to be sold as pets, photo-props and are used in other inhumane tourist attractions. This project is trying its best to get those animals out of the miserable conditions they are living in and to educate both local and international communities about animal welfare and wildlife conservation. At the rescue centre, you will find 6 species of gibbon, 5 species of macaque, lorises, 2 species of langur, 2 species of bear, small wild cats, various civet species, reptiles, otters, birds and many more. All the animals located at the centre have been rescued from poor living conditions, saved from the illegal wildlife trade, the pet industry, the tourism and entertainment industry, or directly from the wild, where they may have been victims of road traffic accidents, dog attacks or other human-caused accidents. Where feasible, the project tries to provide the rescued animals within their care an environment as close to “nature” as possible. The overall objective will always be to rehabilitate and release these animals back to the wild. Unfortunately, for the majority of the animals at the centre, this is often difficult and in some cases not feasible at all.
The centre always needs help from animal lovers and wildlife enthusiasts whether in the form of volunteer work, donations or professional help such as veterinary experience. At the Wildlife Rescue Centre volunteers usually work long days, around 8-9 hours; without the invaluable contribution from volunteers, the centre would simply not be able to function. Although difficult at times the volunteer work at the project is highly rewarding. Typical duties for the volunteers include preparing and distributing food, preparing and distributing behavioural enrichments, assisting with environmental enrichments, cleaning enclosures, scrubbing animal pools, general maintenance including maintaining forest areas. The working day starts at 6:30am at the Volunteer House. The Volunteer House is where all organisation and orientation of volunteers is based. Volunteers will normally finish work around 5pm, with several breaks throughout the day for breakfast, lunch and water and toilet breaks. Volunteers are expected to work 6 days a week with one day off. The work is very physically and mentally demanding but the end result is always well worth it. All volunteers during their time will be asked to assist in additional tasks to help us run the Volunteer House such as House Duty and Doggie Duty. Typically, two people per day are chosen to help with each. House Duty involves ensuring all volunteer areas are kept tidy each day and some common housework is completed. Doggie Duty involves caring for some of the dogs that live at the volunteer house. This involves washings, feeding and walking the dogs. Please be aware the project-work is strictly hands off. Volunteers will have no physical interaction with animals but will provide the essential daily and long-term needs of the animals, such as feeding, cleaning enclosures and providing stimulation in the form of behavioural and environmental enrichments.
IN & AROUND BANGKOK
PMGY volunteers are based in the suburbs of Bangkok, Thailand’s bustling capital city. It’s a city of contrasts. Modern yet cultural, chaotic, traditional and bizarre – you will never get bored in Bangkok we can assure you of that!
Here air conditioned megamalls sit side-by-side with 200-year-old village homes; gold-spired Buddhist temples share space with neon-lit, bar lined strips; slow-moving traffic bypassed by long-tail boats plying the royal river; and streets lined with food carts are overlooked by restaurants on top of skyscrapers.
The great thing about Bangkok is although it is pretty vast, getting around is simple, fast and affordable with the BTS (inner city rail network). Which also means the great nightlife is easy to get to too whether its backpacker central on Koh San Road or catching some great live music at one of the cool bars near Victory Monument.
Volunteers stay in European style, concrete and brick bungalows. Most accommodation is two or three people per room in single sex rooms, with the exceptions of couples, friends and families. Fresh linen is provided weekly during your stay. There are hot showers available in a communal bathroom area if needed during your stay.
Our cleaner cleans rooms weekly, and we ask all volunteers to look after their own space also, by keeping your personal area tidy. Keys for rooms are available by request and deposit. All rooms have electrical outlets for you to use. In Thailand, they use two fat pins, or two round pins, of 220v. There is a main Volunteer House where many volunteers hang out and socialise. It is also where all the volunteer work and life at the project is coordinated.
All your meals are provided during your stay in Thailand. All meals are prepared by the local team. Meals are predominantly traditional and local Thai cuisine. There are western meals provide on a weekly basis.
Clean drinking water is also provided in a number of locations on-site for volunteers.
