    Om programmet

Samburu Village, situated in northern Kenya, is inhabited by a semi-nomadic community that is a sub-tribe of the Maasai. This community lives harmoniously with nature while striving to maintain its cultural and religious traditions. They wear traditional attire and reside in small huts constructed by women using cow dung and mud. Members of the Samburu community practice collective sharing of resources, including income and food, fostering a strong sense of fraternity and loyalty among them. This indigenous group offers a distinctive safari experience and Samburu village are so friendly and they love our volunteers so much.

We currently have 250 children enrolled, with some attending classes under a tree and in temporary facilities. There are approximately four completed classrooms, while we await the completion of additional classrooms, a dormitory, and a kitchen. The school fulfills a dual role by offering education and serving as a safe haven for children facing challenging home circumstances or those who have lost their parents. Without the dedicated support of the school staff, many of these children would be at risk of homelessness and may turn to theft to survive.

The school's teachers are passionate about their work and have ambitious goals for the future. They aim to motivate children who have faced hardships to improve their circumstances and escape the cycle of poverty. Additionally, they are dedicated to ensuring that girls are not disadvantaged due to their gender. Each day at the only school in Samburu Village is filled with laughter and happiness. Most students regard education as a precious opportunity. They understand that diligent study is essential for realizing their dreams and supporting their families.

Establishing schools is a vital step toward enhancing the future prospects of these children and fostering hope. UCESCO is actively seeking volunteers committed to creating a brighter future for those in need. Individuals who possess a positive attitude and a willingness to learn will find a welcoming environment within our programs. The ongoing construction project include:

    • - Building outdoor structures
    • - Painting
    • - Assembling metal scaffolding
    • - Preparing and trimming cement blocks
    • - Erecting walls
    • - Leveling the ground
    • - Constructing roofs
    • - Laying floors
    • - Maintaining buildings
    • - Renovating older structures
As you prepare to join us for your volunteer experience in Kenya, please review the following general guidelines.

There are no direct flights from your country to Samburu village; instead, you will first fly to Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, landing at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Your journey to Samburu village will commence in Nairobi, where you will stay for one or two nights at our accommodation for orientation and planning. From Nairobi, you can make your way to Samburu by road accompanied by one of our staff members. Some volunteers opt for public transportation, while others prefer a private vehicle. The journey to Samburu takes approximately five hours and includes three stops: the first at the Rift Valley viewpoint/Equator view, which marks the division between the northern and southern hemispheres; the second at Thomson Falls for lunch, where you can enjoy the refreshing mist from the water falls and access to clean washrooms; and the third stop for potential wildlife sightings, as it is common to see giraffes, zebras, and elephants along the way. For those visiting Thomson Falls, the entrance fee is 5 USD. Lunch options are available, with prices ranging from 10 USD to 20 USD. The other stops are free of charge, allowing you to immerse yourself in nature and appreciate the breathtaking landscapes and wildlife along the route. If you encounter a particularly stunning view, the driver is always happy to stop for a memorable photo opportunity.

    Mobile Phones and Internet Connectivity

    1. Having a mobile phone allows you to maintain communication with your family and friends. Local SIM cards, with Safaricom being the predominant provider, provide cost-effective options.
    2. Internet connectivity can be accessed through Wi-Fi in accommodations, workplaces, or public spaces such as cafes and shopping centers at Maralal the capital town of Samburu. Additionally, modem sticks for laptops are available as an alternative.
    Packing Essentials
    • The following are necessary items: passport, Yellow Fever vaccination certificate, travel pillow, personal care products, dry shampoo, moist towelettes, and hand sanitizer.
    Accommodation and Meals
In Samburu village, we are currently constructing our volunteer house. During this period, we have arranged accommodations for our volunteers at a hotel that serves delicious breakfast and dinner. The breakfast is hearty enough to double as lunch, and you are welcome to take snacks with you. Additionally, we prepare meals at the school, and you are invited to join the children for these meals if you wish. Besides the Samburu Guest House that we provide for our volunteers, volunteers may also consider staying at Maralal Safari Lodge. Situated within the Maralal Game Sanctuary, this lodge provides a serene and beautiful environment perfect for relaxation. volunteers can enjoy breathtaking views of wildlife, including zebras, impalas, giraffes, and buffalo, as they roam freely nearby, accompanied by the calming sounds of nature at night. The bed and breakfast rate is approximately 90 USD per person per day on top of the project fee.

You can choose to stay at our accommodations or opt for Maralal Safari Lodge. While our facilities are of high quality, you might miss the wildlife experience. We ensure that meals are well-prepared and tailored to meet our volunteers' needs. You will have plenty of opportunities to engage with village life, including home visits, and we can arrange bonfires until around 9 PM before you return to your hotel for the night. If you wish to explore the city, you are free to leave the project site earlier. Official volunteer hours are from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with the rest of your time at your discretion.

While in Samburu, you can participate in various leisure activities, such as:

    - Visiting local homes to immerse yourself in the culture and connect with families
    - Bird-watching for nature enthusiasts
    - Playing football with local children, a fun way to engage with the community
    - Collecting water from the river, offering insight into the daily lives of Samburu women

    Orientation and Flexibility
    • On your initial day, you will undergo a comprehensive orientation at the Nairobi Office. You will be acquainted with a range of activities and program rotations, allowing you to acquire valuable experience and engage in further initiatives while in Samburu. In addition to construction work, you will have the chance to interact with our children, teach them, and take part in farming projects or programs focused on women's empowerment.

    General Questions

Q: Can I bring my family along?
A: Absolutely, you can. While it is advisable for those under 18 to have a guardian, it is not a strict requirement. We welcome minors aged 13 and above without a guardian, as long as there is proper coordination established. We guarantee their safe transit to and from the airport. Our organization is the sole trusted provider in Kenya for the care of minors, ensuring they receive the same level of attention and care as we would offer our own.
Q: Is it possible to make a donation?
    A: Yes, we welcome donations.
Q: Can I arrange for additional donations?
A: Certainly! You can create fundraising campaigns on platforms like GoFundMe to gather extra support.

    Logistics and Accommodation
Q: What is the distance from the accommodation to the project site?
A: The project site is approximately a 30-minute drive from your lodging in Maralal to the village housing the school and our center. Each morning, our local staff will escort you to the project site and return you to your accommodation alongside other international volunteers.
Q: Are items such as towels, bedding, and flip-flops provided?
A: Yes, you do not need to bring these items, as they are provided and changed regularly to maintain high hygiene standards.
Q: Will I need to pay for transportation?
A: Yes, you are responsible for transport costs, except for the initial airport pickup to Nairobi accommodation.

    Volunteer Experience
Q: Will volunteers be working with vulnerable children?
A: Yes, a key aspect of our mission is to empower children and support their development.
Q: Does the community gain from the projects?
A: Yes, the projects have a direct positive effect on the community.
Q: What is the duration of volunteering?
A: You can choose how long you wish to volunteer, and roles will be assigned according to your skills, interests, and preferences.
Q: What are the working hours for volunteers?
A: Volunteers typically start at 10:00 AM and finish around 1:00 PM or when they feel comfortable
Q: What activities can volunteers engage in after their project work?

They can also enjoy local nightlife, partake in nature treks, and attend traditional ceremonies, including circumcisions and marriage celebrations. Additionally, volunteers can immerse themselves in the natural environment by birdwatching in the refreshing air of the village, visiting local homes to experience village life, assisting with livestock care in the forest, joining women in fetching water from the river, and playing football with local children.

     Project Fees and Contributions
Q: What is the reason for volunteers to pay a project fee?
A: UCESCO-AFRICA operates independently and depends on volunteer fees to maintain its projects and overall operations.
Q: In what ways is the volunteer fee utilized?
A:The fees are designated for lodging, meals (breakfast and dinner), continuous project support, and essential resources for the highest priority projects as determined by management. Support is customized to meet the unique requirements of each project. If a volunteer recognizes a specific need, we welcome further assistance and recommendations for any project they wish to contribute to.
Q: Why is lunch not part of the package?
A: Volunteers often work during lunchtime. You have the option to bring your own lunch or purchase affordable meals in the vicinity.
Q: Are T-shirts and identification tags available?
A: The organization provides T-shirts and tags for purchase. Although acquiring a T-shirt is optional, we highly encourage obtaining a tag for identification during participation in our projects. The price is $10 for a T-shirt and $6 for a tag. These purchases contribute to the support of both the organization and the projects we carry out. To help maintain its operations, UCESCO-AFRICA invites volunteers to consider buying merchandise, which acts as a lasting memento of your engagement and support.
How to Acquire Merchandise: Merchandise can be purchased directly at the UCESCO-AFRICA offices. Payments can be made in cash or via mobile transfer (e.g., MPesa).
Why Contribute Through Merchandise? The revenue generated from merchandise sales aids in funding UCESCO-AFRICA’s community initiatives, including programs for at-risk children and various outreach efforts.

    SAFETY AND SUPERVISION
Q: Will volunteers walk alone to project sites from the office?
A: No, a staff member will always accompany you.
Q: What safety protocols are implemented?
A: Volunteers are required to follow established safety rules and practices. Breaches may result in termination.

    QUICK TIPS FOR PERSONAL SAFETY
Stay Aware: Be mindful of your surroundings, particularly in crowded areas.
Secure Your Belongings: Opt for a zipped crossbody bag and position it in front of you.
Limit Your Carry: From your accommodation to the project sites, Bring only essentials—one card and a small amount of cash.
Be Wary of Distractions: Pickpockets often operate in groups, using distractions such as sudden noises or people bumping into you.
Check Frequently: Regularly touch your bag or pocket to confirm that your belongings are secure.
Avoid Vulnerable Situations: Do not leave bags unzipped or place items in easily accessible outer pockets.

    Kenya Safari Animals & Wildlife

    • The wildlife of Kenya serves as the primary draw for tourists exploring Africa, largely due to the remarkable variety of animals and birds that can be observed during a safari, a diversity that is unparalleled in many other countries. With its rich ecosystem, Kenya is home to around 400 species of mammals and an even greater number of bird species, providing an exceptional experience for wildlife enthusiasts. Visitors can expect to encounter some of the most iconic safari animals, including the Big Cats, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and many others.
    • Animals are categorized into mammals, featuring the renowned Big Five—lion, elephant, rhino, leopard, and buffalo—as well as the Big Nine, which includes additional animals that are also highly sought after during safari excursions in Kenya. These include the cheetah, giraffe, hippopotamus, and the commonly seen zebra. Many of our volunteers inquire about the best locations in Kenya to view all of the Big Nine. The ideal approach is to explore at least 2 to 3 different parks during your safari, with the Masai Mara National Reserve being one of the few locations where all of the Big Nine can potentially be spotted.

Hämtning på flygplatsen på Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

Upon your arrival at Nairobi Airport (NBO), a representative from UCESCO Nairobi will be present at the airport exit, easily recognizable by our name, UCESCO Africa, or a sign referencing our prior WhatsApp discussions. You will then be transported to your accommodation in Nairobi in one of our private vehicles. Following your stay, you will either head to Samburu the next day or after two days of rest in Nairobi, which will include an orientation and various projects in the area. Once you confirm your booking and secure your volunteer position with us, we will provide you with our Whatsup number for seamless communication, particularly during your airport pick-up, as the airport has reliable Wi-Fi.

    N/B
There can occasionally be delays with luggage. We have observed that some volunteers have experienced significant waits for their bags, sometimes up to three days. To prepare for such situations, we recommend that you pack essential items and a few clothes to change for 2 - 3 days in your carry-on bag. While luggage delays are not common, they can occur, and we want to help you avoid any unnecessary expenses, such as having to purchase clothing while waiting for your luggage.

    Boende

All accommodations for volunteers come with access to government-treated running water; however, it is recommended that volunteers avoid drinking tap water and choose bottled water instead.

Our facilities feature en-suite rooms and bathrooms, comfortable armchairs, a flat-screen TV, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Parking is available, and the premises are under 24-hour security surveillance, located in a tranquil area with welcoming locals, providing an excellent environment for volunteers to unwind after a day of hard work. Housekeeping services, including bedding changes, are offered on a weekly or daily basis, depending on your preferences.

    Mat och Dryck

We provide two meals daily, as lunchtime often coincides with your time on the project site. You may need to purchase snacks or affordable meals nearby. Occasionally, you might share meals with students, but be cautious, as githeri (a mix of cooked maize and beans) may be challenging to digest if you are not accustomed to it. If you have specific dietary needs, such as vegetarian or vegan preferences, please inform us so we can accommodate you. We will strive to ensure your comfort, but as a volunteer, flexibility is essential for easy adaptation.

    Preparation for Arrival

Engaging in volunteer work in Kenya through our organization promises to be an exciting and transformative experience. You will have the opportunity to connect with new friendships and confront various challenges, all while immersing yourself in a different culture. To fully benefit from this experience, it is advisable to ensure that you are adequately prepared, both physically and mentally.

    Transportation
Probox vehicles and bodaboda (motorcycles) are frequently utilized for transportation in Samburu village. After a few days of acclimatization, you may want to explore the local area, visit supermarkets, or access ATMs. However, we have a designated private bodaboda and comfortable cars that transport our volunteers to the project site each morning and return them in the afternoon. During your first few days, a member of the Kenyan team will accompany you until you feel confident navigating the routes on your own. It is important to learn how to negotiate fares with locals when using public transportation services, as relying on local taxis without bargaining knowledge can lead to higher costs. When using public transport, whether as a volunteer or a local resident, be cautious of pickpocketing, especially in crowded situations. It is advisable to avoid carrying valuables or large sums of cash. For longer trips, we recommend coordinating travel plans with the Kenyan team, who can arrange transportation in a private vehicle or van. Please remember that commuting to the project site is crucial.
