    🌍 About the Program

Just off the stunning coast of Tanzania lies the enchanting island of Zanzibar—a place where time slows down and traditions run deep. For centuries, Zanzibar served as the gateway to East Africa, where merchants from India, Arabia, and China traded spices, ivory, and, sadly, slaves. This rich and complex history has shaped a vibrant island culture that blends African, Indian, and Arab influences—reflected in the people, architecture, food, and customs.

Stone Town, the historic heart of Zanzibar, is a labyrinth of alleys and carved wooden doors, offering a sensory journey into the past. Surrounded by pristine beaches, swaying palms, and turquoise waters, it’s a paradise that combines tropical beauty with a compelling cultural experience.

Since 2011, our education project has been supporting local English-medium primary schools that serve over 2,000 students. Despite large class sizes and very limited resources, these schools work hard to offer quality education in English—a critical skill in Zanzibar’s tourism-driven economy. Volunteers play a key role in assisting teachers, leading English and math activities, and bringing much-needed energy and creativity into the classroom. You might also help run sports and after-school programs, or work with students needing extra support.

    🧒 Who You’ll Help

Our focus is on children aged 6–18 years, many of whom attend school in double shifts due to a lack of facilities. Classrooms are basic, often overcrowded, and teachers struggle with English proficiency. Your support helps bridge that gap—whether through leading lessons, mentoring small groups, or simply sharing your skills, energy, and passion.

The schools are welcoming and culturally rooted, with 95% of the population being Muslim. You’ll be embraced by a community that appreciates your support—as long as you're respectful and open-minded.

    ✏️ Program Highlights

    • Teach English & Math: Make a lasting difference in core subjects where help is most needed.

    • Lead Sports & Activities: Bring fun and fitness to life through simple games and sports.

    • Support Local Teachers: Share educational insights and ideas to help build teacher capacity.

    • Cultural Exchange: Learn about local customs, share your own, and engage in meaningful cross-cultural connection.

    • Community Involvement: Your presence alone is powerful—young students are eager to learn and inspired by you!

    🤝 Guidance & Support

You’ll be welcomed by Khaya’s local coordinators upon arrival in Stone Town. They’ll handle your airport pick-up, orient you to the area, introduce you to your school placement, and provide ongoing support throughout your stay.

🧠 What You Need to Know

Volunteering in Zanzibar is an immersive and eye-opening experience. Things move slower here—“pole pole” (slowly slowly) is a way of life. You’ll need to be flexible, proactive, and respectful of local customs, especially religious norms like modest dress. Be prepared for limited resources, open to unexpected changes, and ready to adapt to local ways.

Volunteering here is not always easy—but it is always rewarding.

🎒 What to Bring (If Possible)

Donations are welcome and deeply appreciated by the schools! Feel free to bring:

    • Educational posters & flashcards

    • Crayons, pens, pencils, scissors

    • Colourful cardboard & water paints

    • Glue sticks & visual learning materials

Every small item makes a big difference.

    🏝️ About Zanzibar

Zanzibar’s charm goes far beyond the classroom. After school, you can lose yourself in Stone Town’s winding alleys, relax at the beach, sip fresh sugarcane juice in Forodhani Gardens, or browse local street markets full of spices, crafts, and vibrant fabrics. On weekends, explore nearby beach villages, dive or snorkel among coral reefs, or take a trip to the legendary Addo Elephant Park or along the Garden Route.

    🔒 Safety & Cultural Etiquette

    • Dress modestly when outside beach areas—cover shoulders and knees.

    • Avoid collecting or buying coral or shells—it damages the ecosystem.

    • Always ask permission before taking someone’s photo.

    • Respect religious sites—non-Muslims should not enter mosques.

    • Lock your belongings, stay aware of your surroundings, and don’t be naïve about smooth-talking “beach boys.”

    💡 Final Thought

This program gives you the rare opportunity to live within a vibrant culture, connect with incredible children, and contribute to something meaningful. You’ll return with new skills, friendships, and a perspective that only comes from being part of something bigger than yourself.

Hämtning på flygplatsen på Zanzibar International Airport

    ✈️ Airport Pick-up & Arrival

Once you email us your arrival details, a Khaya coordinator will be ready to pick you up from the Zanzibar airport or ferry terminal and take you straight to your accommodation.

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania and can be reached by direct flights via Nairobi, Kilimanjaro, or other international hubs. Alternatively, you may fly into Dar es Salaam, where you will need to take a taxi to the ferry terminal for a scenic 40-minute boat ride to Zanzibar. Please inform us of your travel plans so we can prepare for your arrival.

Upon arrival, your coordinator will welcome you, help you settle in, and introduce you to the local staff and house rules. You’ll receive a brief Swahili lesson to learn basic phrases and guidance on using the local daladala minibuses. Within your first week, enjoy a complimentary Stone Town tour with a coordinator to explore its beautiful narrow alleys and vibrant culture.

    🚍 Daily & Local Transport

Zanzibar is a small, relaxed island with various transportation options to suit your preferences. Transport costs are not included in the program. Occasionally, you may get a free ride if a staff member is headed your way, but you should plan to use public transport regularly.

Most volunteers rely on daladalas — shared minibuses with fixed routes connecting your accommodation to Stone Town and other key destinations. While travel may take some time, it’s a fun, authentic way to experience local life, with vendors, families, and even livestock sharing the ride! Your coordinator will escort you to and from your project during your first two days, but after that, you’ll be independent.

Daladalas are very affordable and run frequently — jump on and travel like a local!

    🚴 Bicycle Rental & Purchase

Zanzibar’s low traffic and laid-back lifestyle make cycling a great option for getting around. You can rent a bicycle for about $2 USD per day or purchase one for roughly $80 USD. If you buy a bike, it can be resold back for $40 USD when you leave.

Please note that any repairs or damage during your rental are your responsibility. The nearest nice beach is just a 10-minute bike ride away, giving you freedom to explore the island at your own pace.

    Boende

Your home during the program will be in Chukwani, a peaceful neighborhood just outside of Stone Town, where you'll stay in a shared volunteer house that accommodates up to 18 volunteers. The house includes three spacious bedrooms, two bathrooms, a large kitchen, a dining area, and a comfortable lounge for relaxing with fellow volunteers. The property is secured with a gated wall, offering a safe and welcoming environment.

All bedding is provided (sheets and pillows), but please bring your own towel. Mosquito nets are not supplied—feel free to bring one or purchase one locally, as they’re easy to find and affordable. The amenities are basic and reflect authentic Zanzibari living: showers are cold-water only, which is a refreshing treat in the island’s warm climate.

Just steps from the house, you’ll find a lively street with local food stalls selling fresh fruit juice, Mandazi (local fried dough), and other essentials. A short 20-minute walk leads to bars with fast Wi-Fi and a supermarket with a selection of imported goodies for when you're craving a taste of home.

The house is managed by a friendly cook who prepares daily meals, and volunteers are welcome to use the kitchen if they'd like to cook for themselves. Bedrooms are shared depending on availability, and there’s a tranquil garden space perfect for relaxing after a day of volunteering. Local shops are within easy walking distance, and Stone Town is just a short public transport ride away for weekend exploring or cultural excursions.

    Mat och Dryck

You’ll be treated to three hearty local meals each day, with a flavorful mix of meat, chicken, seafood, and vegetarian dishes. Zanzibari cuisine is vibrant and diverse, known for its fragrant spices and Swahili influences—expect plenty of rice, chapatis (flatbreads), and the island’s beloved homemade chips (fries). It’s a great opportunity to explore new tastes and enjoy meals made with fresh, local ingredients.

Meals are prepared by either your host family or the on-site cook at the volunteer house. Breakfast typically includes tea or coffee, toast with spreads like jam or peanut butter, and seasonal fruits. Lunch and dinner are warm, cooked meals served after your workday—you’re free to enjoy them at your own pace.

Boiled drinking water is safely provided at the house. Bottled mineral water is also widely available for purchase at around TZS 800 per 1.5-liter bottle (approximately $0.35 USD), though prices may vary slightly with exchange rates.

If you’d like to treat yourself with snacks or imported favorites, feel free to bring them along or pick them up locally at your own cost.
