About the Program

In the simplest of words it is basically the creation of an environment where women can make independent decisions on their personal development as well as shine as equals in society. This can only happen if there is a channelized route for the empowerment of women. There are several challenges that are currently plaguing the issues of women’s rights in India. While a lot of these are redundant and quite basic issues faced across the country, these are contributory causes to the overarching status of women in India. Our volunteers will work with local village girls and women as a helper. This program enables you to support women in their recreation for healthy and sustainable livelihoods. Women's groups provide a forum for issues such as family health, women's rights, and access to resources, income generation, and other challenges women face in their daily lives.

Volunteers have the opportunity to exchange ideas, collaborate in ongoing projects, teach basic English skills, help with small businesses, and be a positive role model. You can also provide support in many other ways, depending on your skills and interests and the needs of the local community. So, Dharamshala Volunteering and Travel Solutions invites all interested national and international volunteers to be a part of our women development program. Your small effort can make a big difference to the women in the most marginalized communities.

Who we are looking for?

Only female volunteers from worldwide can join this program. 

Volunteer Work and Contribution

As a volunteer, you'll be assigned to teach either or both morning or afternoon classes depending on the number of students and your personal preference (all classes are about 2 hours long). Each day, you will also help plan lessons for the following day. Your tasks may include:

  • Teaching English and basic computer skills
  • Encouraging women to become more self-reliant through learning activities, creative workshops or vocational training
  • Running a health, hygiene and reproductive health workshop
  • Organizing fun activities once a week with the women
  • Educating young girls about their rights
  • Helping with cleaning or maintenance tasks in the schools

Working days as a women empowerment supporter in rural villages are from Monday to Friday. Working days as a women empowerment supporter in rural villages are from Monday to Friday. Weekends are free for volunteers, every day volunteers will work 2 hours in the morning and in the afternoon. The placement of the volunteer depends on different needs and available positions. Volunteers can join the program as individual or in groups. After the program in the evening they are free to visit local markets and places.

What's not included in our programs:

Air fare, travel insurance, Indian visa, bottled water, expensive food in restaurants (which is only included on weekend programs).

Hämtning på flygplatsen på Gaggal Airport

To embark on our transformative programs, individuals first journey to Delhi International Airport. From there, the path diverges: a direct flight whisks them to the serene embrace of Gaggal, Dharamshala, or they opt for a scenic Volvo bus ride, winding through the picturesque landscapes toward Dharamshala. Regardless of the chosen route, our team ensures a seamless transition, extending a warm welcome with airport pickups and the reassuring presence of our coordinator throughout the Volvo journey.

Boende

Our large volunteer house in Dharamshala is basic but clean. It is situated in a safe neighbourhood and comes with a security (night) guard. The rooms are provided with bunk beds for four people. All rooms have attached or non-attached bathrooms with a toilet (toilet paper will be provided). The running water in the shower is cold, it will only be heated up during the winter season (late October – early March). A single room can be requested upon availability and with a small extra charge only by couples.


In our volunteer house, the volunteers have access to computers with broadband, a sky TV with English and Hindi channels, a film library and a book library.

Volunteers are responsible for the cost of their own phone call charges.

Mat och Dryck

All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) within the accommodation are native to the region of India and freshly prepared by our house chef. The meals are mostly north Indian curries and traditional Himachali food, so the meals can often be vegetarian. Non vegetarian food is prepared only on special demand and it will charge an extra amount.  

Moreover you can mention your food related allergies and it will be kept in mind while preparing the food.

We have water purification facilities on site that volunteers can use to fill their water bottles.
