Community Development Experience

Agency | JIVE

Community Development involves many activities and usually geared more towards volunteers who want to experience a variety of tasks while volunteering in Rio de Janeiro.

Activities include:

  • Painting

  • Putting down floors

  • Building walls

  • Giving classes on basic computer skills

  • Helping to secure an internet connection and setup an IT lab

  • we even work with a project making souvenirs, clothing accessories and clothes for a fashion designer based in a favela

We need highly driven individuals who know how to work independently. An intermediate level of Portuguese or advanced Spanish will be a huge advantage. Also since this involves such a wide range of activities, the volunteer should be flexible with a willingness to help in several activities. It would be great if you could tell us what type of activities you would be interested in doing. If you would like to work with the fashion designer in a favela please let us know so we can place you accordingly. Let us know if you have any experience in construction work because this comes as a real asset!

We work in Vila Kennedy, Barreira do Vasco and Cantagalo.

JIVE House

We are located in Santa Teresa, in the heart of Rio de Janeiro.

Santa Teresa is one of the oldest neighborhoods in this beautiful city with easy access to downtown, Zona Sul, and Zona Norte.

The neighborhood captivates visitors and residents alike for its colonial architecture and cobble-stoned streets. It is also common to see many artists and tourists here. You get the feeling that you are in a small town with a bohemian and alternative vibe.

To this very day the symbol of the neighborhood is the yellow tram, which connects residents to the city center. With great pleasure we announce that the tram has come back and passes right in front of the house. :)

At the accommodation we have eight rooms. We have one room that can fit 8 volunteers, two rooms that can fit 4, one room with 6 beds, three rooms with 2 beds and only one private room. Generally we try to put our more mature volunteers in rooms with less people or those with medical conditions. Therefore during high season such as Carnival, the Guest House can accommodate up to 29 volunteers.

Our house is very secure and has camera surveillance along with a highly advanced alarm system that prevents from any dangers that could occur.

Also, our office is located at the accommodation, so if you ever want to stop by feel free to do so.

Food & Beverages

Breakfast is served everyday and includes: whole grain bread, butter, Brazilian cheese, ham, guava jam, juice, coffee, tea, fruit, scrambled eggs and oatmeal. There are two fully running kitchens equipped with a stove, refrigerator, pots, pans, utensils, ect. We also allow our volunteers free rein of both kitchens to cook any other meals.
