Grade 6 is an upper class between 12-14 years of age.
The class is both of girls and boys from the nearby community.
The Grade 6 class is one of the upper primary school at our project.Normally the children are selected from the population where their families or guardians are unable to cater for their education.
As a charity we do our best to enroll them to access the quality education so as to change their lives. The class is a mixed one of both girls and boys who get education materials as books, pens, pencils from our charity. They also get uniforms, sweaters, shoes, bags in order to be motivated and forget about the life challenges in their homes and work hard in class. Apart from that the charity gives them a warm food at school during lunch break which to some is the only meal they have for a day and wait for the other day to come back to school and have another meal.
The school gives them a desk to sit on, a black board where shared notes are written and practical teaching done for them to copy and learn. The volunteers help in motivating them to study through checking how they have written if they have understood what was being taught. The volunteers also take an initiative to teach on the black board and check the work. The class also learn from the volunteers about countries in Europe and where they are located on the map.Having volunteers develops the children learning and expands their thinking that they are not centered around Kenya but outside Kenya.
Class work and homework is work that is shared between volunteers and teachers depending on where a volunteer is able to do or teach or do the checking of the books. The subjects taught are English,Mathematics,Social Studies,Science,Composition,Religious Christian Education and Swahili.
It takes 6 hours for upper class 6 to be taught and given homework. They are very good in speaking and playing. On Friday the school is in class untill 10:30a.m and the other one hour and half it is practical exercise where there is dancing and singing both in English and Swahili. The class that leads into such singing is class six and it is a very exciting time which volunteers always look forward to have.
Aday full of activities sometimes is very tiring but volunteers walk around to do shopping for what they need, other sit on their computers to copy what they have done within the day, other communicate to their friends and families on social media.
Our volunteer program works according to the government school schedule. Schools in Kenya are open on 3 non consecutive months and there is a school holiday for 1 month.
Take example this calendar year 2017; schools were open from the first week of January to end of march and currently(April) have been closed on a one month holiday after which classes will resume on May's first week till end of July and a one month holiday in August. Classes then resume first week of August till late November to give way for the Christmas holiday in December. In between learning terms, (eg. January to March) schools are given an allowance to have mid-term holidays that usually last about 4 days, this is not compulsory and school principals can decide to do away with it.
This rules apply to Kenyan junior schools(baby Class to 8th grade and high schools(form 1 to form 4) except for universities
Learning is done only during business days which is Monday to Friday and not on weekends.
Free time is basically from Saturday and Sunday. But is a volunteer wants to go on safari then we can arrange with the volunteer on days available for the safari depending on when the touring company has allocated the volunteer time for the safari.
Otherwise from Monday to Friday is very busy days and very tiring because it involves the kids. They have the energy to play and take a lot of energy from those who teach them. In case volunteers what to do something after the school they normally can shop from the supermarket around,or take coffee as they relax in a nearby shopping center. We orientate the volunteer on the arrival day to be familiar with the market places, shopping malls and supermarket where to buy his or her personal items.
Most volunteers after school take time on computers to write what they have done within the day and also to communicate on social media with their friends and families and Skype
On weekends the volunteers chose to go for safari which is three days two nights.Mostly it is at Amboseli,Masai Mara, Naivasha and Nakuru. At Naivasha they go to hells gate,Others go to magadi soda.We also have Mt.Kenya Trekking and the equator.
