    Om programmet

Work in one of Tanzania's most vital yet under-resourced healthcare areas – mental health. This internship places you within a local hospital's Mental Health Department, where you'll work alongside psychiatric-trained nurses, counsellors, psychotherapists, social workers, and mental health practitioners delivering life-changing psychological and psychiatric services. This isn't observational shadowing – you'll become an integral part of the treatment team, contributing to real client care while learning approaches to mental health care.

    Target Community

You'll serve clients from across Arusha facing a wide spectrum of mental health challenges: anxiety, depression, substance abuse, relationship difficulties, psychosomatic illnesses, trauma, stress-related disorders, sexuality concerns, sexual abuse recovery, and parenting struggles. Many are accessing mental health services for the first time in their lives, navigating cultural stigma while seeking help. Beyond individual clients, you'll reach families affected by mental illness and communities where mental health awareness is critically low.

    The Challenge

Mental health remains one of Tanzania's most neglected healthcare areas. Stigma runs deep, resources are scarce, and trained mental health professionals are few. Many people suffer in silence, unaware that help exists or too afraid to seek it. The hospital's small but dedicated mental health team works to provide clinical care, community outreach and family support groups.

    Our Partnership Approach

We work directly with the hospital's Mental Health Department, integrating qualified interns into their existing clinical team. You'll be assigned a supervisor from day one who will guide your learning, ensure proper orientation, and involve you in meaningful clinical work. This isn't a separate volunteer program – you're joining their team, contributing to their mission, and learning their culturally-informed approaches to mental health care.

    Your Role & Hands-On Activities

    Hospital-Based Work:

    • Clinical Assessments: Participate in initial client evaluations and mental health assessments under professional supervision
    • Counseling Sessions: Observe and assist with individual and group counseling sessions
    • Treatment Planning: Contribute to treatment planning discussions and case reviews with the clinical team
    • Client Education: Help educate clients about psychological issues and develop personalized coping strategies
    • Social Work Initiatives: Support social work activities that address clients' broader life circumstances
    • Family Support Groups: Assist with support groups for families affected by mental illness
    • Documentation: Help with client records, case notes, and treatment documentation

    Community Outreach:

    • Fieldwork & Awareness: Participate in community outreach initiatives raising awareness about mental health issues
    • Sober Houses & External Programs: Join visits to sober houses and other community-based mental health programs

    What You'll Learn & Gain

    • Cross-Cultural Mental Health Competency: Understand how mental health is conceptualized and treated outside Western frameworks
    • Clinical Skills Development: Enhance assessment, counseling, and therapeutic skills in a real-world setting
    • Trauma-Informed Care: Gain experience working with trauma, abuse, and complex mental health presentations
    • Community Mental Health Approach: Learn how mental health care extends beyond the clinic into communities
    • Stigma Navigation: Understand cultural barriers to mental health care and how to address them
    • Resource-Limited Practice: Develop creativity and adaptability in delivering care with limited resources
    • Professional Supervision: Receive mentorship from experienced Tanzanian mental health professionals
    • Global Mental Health Perspective: Deepen understanding of mental health inequities and culturally-responsive care

Turn Your Volunteer Experience Into an Accredited Diploma

Your time volunteering can become much more than an unforgettable experience. Alongside your placement, you have the opportunity to complete an internationally recognised accredited diploma, built entirely around the work you're already doing in Tanzania. With no exams and only a small amount of additional work completed online throughout your programme, you'll graduate with a recognised qualification that can strengthen your CV, support university applications and, in many countries, even contribute towards academic credit.

Managing Your Expectations: The Reality of Volunteering

Whilst we do our best to be as accurate as possible with what to expect on your program, the nature of volunteering is fundamentally about coming to one of the most challenged parts of the world, learning to understand the barriers and challenges surrounding community development, and then being flexible, adaptable, and proactive in working on solutions to how you can be of best benefit during your time there.

Volunteering is, more than anything, a learning experience—so please always expect the unexpected. It's not a curated or meticulously planned travel experience. In fact, it's quite the opposite. You might find that some community members are incredibly welcoming from day one, eager to have you lead activities and drive initiatives. Others may be more skeptical or hesitant to have you heavily involved right away, preferring to continue with their established ways of doing things.

Don't let this worry you, and don't be quick to assume you're in the wrong place. Take the time to adapt to a new culture and its challenges. Focus first and foremost on building rapport with those you're working with—get to know the students, teachers, NGO staff, and community members. Show respect, demonstrate that you're not there to immediately change their ways, and then slowly and respectfully introduce ideas about how you could be better involved, support classroom management, or share the workload.

If you find you're not doing what you expected, please lean on our coordinators for support—there is almost always a solution, and that's exactly what they're there for.

Ultimately, our volunteers are the ones who drive all of our initiatives as an organization. Our core focus is on capacity building and making sustainable improvements through sharing ideas, skills, and knowledge. As such, we cannot always provide a pre-set, specifically structured experience. We can, however, guide, support, and equip you along the way.

The volunteers who are flexible, open-minded, adaptable, willing to work through challenges, and take the most initiative in their programs are always the ones who have the best and most enriching experiences!
