Project Details

A cultural exchange centre in the heart of the Ecuadorian Andes.

El Terreno (‘The Land’) is nestled in the heart of the Ecuadorian Andes, surrounded by beautiful valleys, warm people and indegenous cultures. We are in the process of building a vibrant cultural exchange centre that brings foreigners and local people together to make a more meaningful and prosperous world. We are Joshua (England) and Karina (Quito, Ecuador), a couple with a strong passion for positive change and years of experience in social development, volunteer coordination and sustainable tourism.

We’re in the early stages - buying the land in March 2021 - but we have big ambitions! We will regenerate local ecosystems, build pride in indigenous culture, provide dignified employment opportunities, offer a wide variety of unique eco & community tourism experiences, and ensure volunteers like you learn valuable skills, meet extraordinary people and leave with unforgettable memories.

Social Impact

From July - Dec 2021 we have had 22 volunteers who delivered over 50 hours of workshops to the local community in everything from English, to cooking exchanges to first aid. We have also run several community events and have just begun a monthly community café as a way of building stronger relationships with community members and finding out their needs.

We are planning several projects in which you can make a difference in, depending on the project you decide to join us with. Here's a brief list of some of the activities we are undertaking:
  • English and Creative Classes with Local Children
  • Building Smoke-Free Stoves for the Local Community
  • Designing and implementing a Food Forest, Terraces and Water Systems based on Permaculture Principles
  • Develop Trails and Sustainable Tourism Activities
  • Restauration of a 150-year Old Farmhouse to be used as a Cultural Centre
  • Research into Needs of the Local Community for Future Projects
  • Help with Social Media and Marketing to Raise Awareness of our Mission
Come and help us be a part of creating a Cultural Exchange Centre where you can give them a chance to share their culture, inspire them to learn new things and go out into the local community to help those who need it most.
