In this program, you can make a difference in fighting food waste in Barcelona!
Did you know that 262.000 tonnes of food are wasted annually in Catalonia? Did you know that from all the food purchased by restaurants, shops and families each year, 7% is wasted?
In Barcelona, there are numerous initiatives to reduce food waste, however, most of these initiatives depend on volunteers. What is still lacking is solidarity, courage and a broad-based social consciousness which acknowledges that the problem is a worldwide issue affecting the entire planet.
And that’s where you can make a difference, by helping these initiatives to achieve their goals of giving a new future to surplus food and making it arrive to a true destiny in need.
In this program, the volunteer tasks are to collect, select and store food that will be distributed to different associations in Barcelona city as food baskets. Depending on the day, the products to be prepared can range from canned food to large amounts of fruit and vegetables.
After the initial orientation day, you will have a morning, afternoon or evening shift and will work for approximately 3 to 5 hours per day.
A typical schedule is as follows:
07:00 - 10:00 a.m. : Breakfast at the volunteer accommodation
10:00 a.m. :
01:30 p.m. : Lunch is served at the accommodation. In the morning you can grab a “packed lunch” to have in the city or at your placement.
02:00 - 07:00 p.m. :
08:00 - 10:00 p.m. : Dinner at the accommodation. After dinner you will have the remainder of the evening free to relax and use as you wish.
