About the program

Many kindergartens and schools on Crete receive no or insufficient support from the Greek state. The institutions are often responsible for financing their own materials, activities and staff. As a result, there is often a lack of the most basic things and many schools and kindergartens are understaffed. Of course, these conditions are far from ideal for children's development. For this reason, committed volunteers who want to help out on Crete are always welcome.

This is also the case for the kindergarten that you will support as a volunteer. The institution is located in Heraklion, the capital of Crete, and has been ensuring that the youngest members of society are well off for about 30 years. A special focus is on early childhood development, but of course there is also a lot of fun, games and laughter on the agenda.

Typical day

In the first days there will be a training session to help you settle in. You will get to know the program, all procedures and of course your new colleagues. You will work six hours a day from Monday to Friday.

Afterwards you will take care of the children and assist the educators. It should be age-appropriate activities, from learning through play to being creative or even sporting activities. What exactly you do, you discuss with the team leaders on site. This can vary on a daily basis and depends on your skills and previous knowledge. Of course, the kindergarten must also be kept clean and you divide up the tasks.

It is important that the development of the children is promoted in the best possible way and that you bring a lot of dedication and patience.

Crete is the largest Greek island and one of the sunniest in the Mediterranean. The paradisiacal island seduces you with 300 hours of sunshine per year and invites you to a beach vacation. But it is also worthwhile to put the numerous cultural sights on the to-do list. Probably the most important is the Palace of Knossos, closely followed by the Arkadi Monastery near Rethymnon and the Archaeological Museum of Iraklio. Here you will learn a lot about Greek history and there are several other destinations, such as the Samaria Gorge or the coastal city of Chania.

2023 at Assistant for an Animal Shelter

I decided to spend 2 weeks in the animal shelter in Crete. Everything went wrong from the beginning. I was placed much too far from the shelter and took 2 hours to get there. After a complaint I was put in a dirty house with cockroaches, no air conditioning and mouse droppings. After another ...
This was a very bad experience for my sister and me. Firstly, we were sent to a different riding school than what had been advertised, without any warning. When we saw the place we had doubts about the animal's welfare. Not to mention the fact that the organization didn't listen to us when we ...
