About the program

Your placement on Crete is an organization that is fully committed to animal welfare. For more than 15 years, they have been ensuring that the many stray dogs and other needy animals receive the medical care they need to survive.

And this commitment is also bitterly necessary. On the largest Greek island there are many stray dogs and cats, which are often in a very critical state of health. As a volunteer you will support, depending on your previous knowledge, in the care of the animals and in the administrative activities of the organization. The organization you are involved with has an excellent reputation in Crete.

The goal of your placement is to provide the animals with the care and attention they need in the short term. In the long term, their general living situation should be improved sustainably.

Your tasks as a volunteer vary, depending on your previous knowledge. What is important is a love of animals and a willingness to work hard. Your tasks include, for example, greeting the four-legged patients and their owners, filing medical records and caring for the animals in the clinic. Volunteers also provide a pleasant and friendly atmosphere and environment so that both the animals and their owners feel comfortable at all times.

Two volunteers can participate in the project at a time and the working hours are six hours per day from Monday to Friday.

In the first days there is a training session to help the new volunteers to get to know the people, the program and the work.

Crete is the largest Greek island and one of the sunniest in the Mediterranean. The paradisiacal island seduces you with 300 hours of sunshine per year and invites you to a beach vacation. But it is also worthwhile to put the numerous cultural sights on the to-do list. Probably the most important is the Palace of Knossos, closely followed by the Arkadi Monastery near Rethymnon and the Archaeological Museum of Iraklio. Here you will learn a lot about Greek history and there are several other destinations, such as the Samaria Gorge or the coastal city of Chania.

2023 at Assistant for an Animal Shelter

I decided to spend 2 weeks in the animal shelter in Crete. Everything went wrong from the beginning. I was placed much too far from the shelter and took 2 hours to get there. After a complaint I was put in a dirty house with cockroaches, no air conditioning and mouse droppings. After another ...
This was a very bad experience for my sister and me. Firstly, we were sent to a different riding school than what had been advertised, without any warning. When we saw the place we had doubts about the animal's welfare. Not to mention the fact that the organization didn't listen to us when we ...
