Empower vulnerable Dominican children, youth and women by promoting valuable life skills like leadership, raising awareness of current problems, and creating safe spaces. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Singles
Couples
Groups
50+
In the Dominican Republic, many women, children and youth face very big problems that actively inhibit their development and success, such as poverty, inequality, sexism and many other things. Through this volunteer experience, we want to counteract all these problems in the lives of these vulnerable people by promoting leadership, skills development, constructive use of time, social inclusion and awareness of issues such as the importance of education or general problems.

You will be directly involved in creating safe spaces for many of these people and therefore directly create new opportunities for them.

As a volunteer, you will directly interact with and understand the specific concerns that each community and each family within it has, so that you can then contribute and focus your efforts on their specific needs. Therefore, the specific work plan is created based on the specific needs of the community you will be working with at that time. That said, work plans usually include activities such as giving disability awareness talks and workshops, giving family integration workshops, giving educational talks, giving empowerment workshops, supporting home visits, assisting in family support and participating in awareness raising activities.

Typical day

Volunteers shall work on weekdays (Monday through Friday). On weekends, volunteers are free to go discover everything the Dominican Republic has to offer them.

Volunteers must work at least six hours a day. Volunteers usually work in two shifts: one in the morning, from 8:00 to 12:00; and one in the afternoon, from 14:00 to 17:00.

Free-time activities

A warm tropical paradise located in the heart of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic has countless beautiful places available for you to discover.

The Samana area, where you will be volunteering, is famous for its large number of coconut trees. There are many beautiful white sand beaches, such as Cayo Levantado or Cayo de Arena, that you can visit during your stay in the Dominican Republic. Samana is also known for being a whale sanctuary, so at many times of the year you will be able to see many of these impressive animals.

On the north coast of the Samana region, there is a charming little town called Las Terrenas, a small town surrounded by the beautiful beaches of Playa Bonita and Playa Coson which is the perfect place for kite surfing.

We also recommend volunteers to visit Salto el Limon, a beautiful waterfall of more than 50 meters high located about 20 km from Samana. To get to the falls, you can hire a local guide (generally costs between 100 and 500 pesos per person, although it is negotiable), who will take you through the rainforest either walking or riding on horseback. It is a scenic and memorable overall experience not to be missed!

There is also Los Haitises National Park, dotted with mangroves, streams, humid subtropical forests, seagrass meadows, pirate hideouts and pristine cays, a perfect place for bird watching.

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, is also an excellent place to visit; there is a wealth of historical monuments, museums, a lively nightlife and art galleries through which you can experience the unique culture of the Dominican Republic.
