About the program

The Jungle Conservation program begins with 2 days in Cusco where volunteers participate in a mandatory orientation session and receive information about their trip to the project site. Volunteers go to a conservation site in the Amazon Rainforest, outside of Cusco. There, they are involved in various types of work depending on the current needs of the project.

Volunteers take part in a variety of activities, including:

  • Reforestation—planting trees, shrubs, and orchids
  • Removing invasive, non-native species of bamboo
  • Wildlife monitoring—observing and counting species of birds, insects (especially butterflies), amphibians, and primates
  • Organic gardening
  • Trail maintenance
  • Scientific research in biology, chemistry, and zoology
  • Educational workshops with local communities

On rainy days work may be limited to indoor activities, such as doing repairs at the lodge and/or working with the local school. Sometimes there are opportunities to teach English to the staff and community members.

Typical day

Working hours vary according to the needs of the project, but volunteers can expect to work 4-8 hours per day, Monday to Saturday. Working hours are in either the morning or the afternoon, depending on the needs of the project.

Free-time activities

All year round, Cusco and its surrounding towns celebrate a mix of Inca and Catholic holidays, allowing visitors to experience a variety of cultural activities. Our local staff always posts a monthly events calendar to let participants know about the activities going on. Cusco also offers historical and archaeological sites both within and outside of the city. Common destinations volunteers can explore include Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca, and the famous Machu Picchu. There are a lot of options and our staff is well-acquainted with the area and can advise on the must-see places. Our on-site travel partner is also very knowledgeable and can assist in setting up trips.

Accommodation

For the first couple days volunteers stay in Cusco to receive the orientation. In Cusco, they stay in a traditional family-stay with a pre-approved middle class Peruvian family in a shared room with 1-3 other people of the same gender.

Breakfast and dinner are included seven days a week. Our host families live in the Cusco area, and are 10-25 minutes walking or by bus from the Maximo Nivel institute. At the jungle project, they stay in dorm-style accommodations that include three meals a day.

Meals are often vegetarian, and vary depending on the seasonal ingredients available locally. During their stay, participants must take part in keeping their accommodations clean and doing other chores to help maintain the living facilities.

Bedding, which includes at least one thick blanket, linens, and a mosquito net, is provided. However, between July and September they may also consider bringing a sleeping bag, especially if they tend to get cold easily. There are no laundry facilities available at the jungle project. Volunteers must be prepared to hand-wash their clothes and dry them in the sun. Hot water for showering is not available at the jungle project site.

The staff (Alex, Susan, Aldo) spent extra effort to make sure that the reasons for every volunteer work were well explained to us, and that they would make a positive impact on ...
