As a volunteer on the Special Needs Support project in Split, you will be providing your time in helping in care centres for children, teenagers and adults with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities.
The aim of this program is to help provide individualized care for people with disabilities, enabling them to be more integrated within their community and to live a less stigmatized life, contributing to improve their quality of life. You’ll work alongside a team of local staff and volunteers giving support on the outdoor activities, as beach walks, bicycle tours and animal farms projects. You’ll also assist on indoor activities as arts and crafts workshops, cooking and physical therapy.
This project is well suited to compassionate, patient and caring people. If that sounds like you, then your time on this project will be both rewarding and highly valued by the local community. As you will be working closely with the local placement staff, you are not required to have previous experience or training to participate on this project.
After the initial orientation day, you will have a morning, afternoon or evening shift at the Special Needs Support placement and will work for approximately 3 to 5 hours per day.
A typical schedule is as follows:
07:00 - 10:00 a.m. : Breakfast at the volunteer accommodation
10:00 a.m. : (1) Travel to the Special Needs Support place to join the local staff and begin work on your project with disabilities people or
(2) Explore the city, relax, attend Croatian language lessons or enroll other activities if you have an afternoon project.
01:30 p.m. : Lunch is served at the accommodation. In the morning you can grab a “packed lunch” to have in the city or at your placement.
02:00 - 07:00 p.m. : (1) Travel to the Special Needs Support place to join the local staff and begin work on your project with disabilities people or
(2) Explore the city, relax, attend Croatian language lessons or enroll other activities if you have a morning project.
08:00 - 10:00 p.m. : Dinner at the accommodation. After dinner you will have the remainder of the evening free to relax and use as you wish.
Situated in the middle of Kozjak and Mosor mountains and surrounded by the Adriatic Sea, just a few hours from any of the other European capitals, the small peninsula where Split is located has a lot to offer to every visitor and traveller.

On the one hand a rich historical heritage full of monuments classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the other a country that is still recovering from a political war, in the group of countries with the highest number of people living below the poverty line.
With charming old cities and towns, gorgeous beaches and more than thousand islands, its history has resulted in a very rich cultural diversity which was brought from Roman and Turkish, so Mediterranean and eastern European influences. These historical heritages mark the different regions of Croatia. Between Istria, Dalmatia and the center of Croatia, the gastronomy, lifestyle and accents can change a lot, making the country very diverse and interesting. Split, the second biggest city, has a specific Mediterranean influence that makes it especially welcoming, cosy and warmer. With its palace just on the seaside, Split brings a peaceful and fresh atmosphere that invites you to come and stay for a while.
The fees are used to provide food, accommodation, pick-up at the airport, guided city tour, material for the different activities and insurance. Please note that visa and airplane tickets are not included.
You will stay accommodated in a friendly and comfortable hostel, just 20min from the city center. The Hostel has the capacity to accommodate up to 100 travelers who want to visit Split in a relaxed way. With its young and welcoming staff you will feel like home.
There are various common areas such as dining room/restaurant, living room and a spacious outside patio perfect for relaxing and socializing mornings, afternoons or evenings.The hostel is in a neighborhood where you can find everything you need: local coffee shops, supermarkets, ATMs, utilities you will need just around the corner. The Hostel is 2 minutes walking from the bus stop with few buses running by that can bring you to the city center.The Hostel has a very connected connotation to the region of Split, Dalmatia, and represents the more than one thousand islands extended along the Croatian coast.
Our program generally start on Mondays and Tuesdays of each week, all year long.
