    About the Veterinary Internship Program

The veterinary program is designed for veterinary students who want to gain insight into clinical work in a high-volume, resource-limited environment.

Interns primarily assist and observe in the daily work of the veterinary clinic. Tasks may include supporting consultations, assisting during surgeries, helping with inpatient care, monitoring animals, preparing materials, maintaining hygiene standards, and supporting general clinic organisation.

Depending on experience and demonstrated ability, responsibilities may gradually increase under the supervision of the veterinary team. However, all work is closely guided, and patient welfare always comes first.

At Mbwa Wa Africa, every animal is treated with the same level of care, regardless of whether it is a privately owned pet, a community dog, or a stray animal. The clinic was established not only to support the shelter financially but also to provide veterinary care to animals that would otherwise have no access to treatment.

    Working and Living Environment

The project is located in a rural area near Arusha in northern Tanzania, surrounded by nature with views of Mount Meru. Interns live on-site at The Gongo Centre in shared volunteer accommodation.

The clinic operates in a busy and dynamic environment. Work can be intense, unpredictable, and emotionally challenging, with a wide variety of cases ranging from routine treatments to emergencies. Veterinary standards and resources differ from those in many Western countries, so adaptability and problem-solving are essential.

    Team and Collaboration

Interns work closely with the local veterinary team, led by veterinarian Dr. Anna Charles Ng’washi, veterinary assistants, and clinic staff. They are also supported by volunteer coordinators Jaqueline and Vivian, as well as the wider shelter team and international volunteers.

Collaboration with the local team is a key part of the experience, and interns are expected to follow guidance.

    Expectations and Requirements

We only accept volunteers with a medical background for the veterinary clinic. All other volunteers are primarily based in the shelter and may assist in the clinic only when additional help is required.

Interns are expected to be motivated, responsible, and willing to learn. It is important to understand that this is not a setting for unsupervised practice. Even though many animals are strays or community animals, every life is valued, and all treatments are carried out professionally and ethically.

Working in this environment requires flexibility, resilience, and the ability to adapt to limited resources and different clinical standards. Creative problem-solving is often part of daily work.

    Interns should bring:

    • Scrubs or appropriate clinical clothing
    • A reliable headlamp (power outages can occur)

    What Interns Can Expect

Interns can expect to gain hands-on insight into veterinary work in a developing country, experience a wide range of medical cases, and be part of a dedicated and passionate team.

This program offers a unique opportunity to contribute to meaningful animal welfare work while learning in a real-world, high-impact setting.

    Día típico

The clinic operates from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, though the exact schedule can vary depending on caseload, emergencies, and ongoing treatments.

08:30 AM – Start of the Day
The day begins with inpatient care. This includes cleaning kennels, administering medication, monitoring recovering animals, and general clinic organisation. Maintaining hygiene standards is a key part of daily work.

    Morning (from approx. 9:30 AM)
The schedule then depends on the day:

    • Tuesdays: Surgery day for stray and community dogs (e.g. spay/neuter procedures)
    • Wednesdays: Surgery day for client-owned and shelter animals
    • Other weekdays: Consultations, treatments, follow-ups, and occasional house calls

In addition, once a week, our team conducts TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumour) rounds in the project area.

Veterinary interns assist and observe during all procedures, support patient handling, prepare materials, and help with documentation.

    01:00 PM – Lunch Break
There is usually a lunch break around 1:00 PM. On busy surgery days, this may be delayed depending on the number of procedures.

    Afternoon (approx. 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM)
Afternoons are typically dedicated to consultations, treatments, follow-up care, and continued inpatient management. This includes monitoring recovery, administering medication, cleaning, and updating patient records.

    Throughout the Day

    • Emergency cases can arrive at any time and take priority
    • All treatments, consultations, and procedures are documented in the clinic system
    • General tasks such as laundry, answering the clinic phone, and maintaining organisation are shared responsibilities

While some days are extremely busy and demanding, others may be quieter. Flexibility is essential, as workloads can change quickly.

    Alojamiento

The Volunteer House of Mbwa Wa Africa is located on the same compound where also the clinic and the shelter is located.
The Volunteer House has two floors. The downstairs area has three bedrooms with a total of five beds, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen. The rooms are simply equipped but have everything you need. The kitchen is fully equipped and in the living room there are games and books. We provide bed linen and towels.
The downstairs area is home to our resident dogs. Please respect that these dogs are at home here and leave the front door a tad bit open at night so that they do not relieve themselves inside.
The upstairs apartment is reserved for long term volunteers. Currently, our project manager with her dogs occupy this area. Please respect this space as their long term home.

Please be aware, Mbwa wa Africa is located a bit remote in the village of Sangananu. With a car or motorbike taxi the closest city, Usa River, is about 10 minutes away, 40 minutes when walking. Arusha, the bigger city, is about 40 minutes away by car, 1 to 1.5 hours with public transport. Our house is not always full, so it can be that you might be the only volunteer at a time that lives at the house. While our project manager lives upstairs in the same building and you are never completely alone in the house, the evenings are usually quiet.

    Comida y bebida

We will provide the basics for breakfast: coffee, tea, milk, sugar, toast, jam, vegetables and fruits. Every volunteer prepares their own breakfast as everyone gets up at a different time. Lunch at the shelter is communal. Also, in our kitchen we have a water filter where you can drink from without any concerns.

For dinner at our volunteer house we have a wonderful cook who spoils us with traditional and western meals, soups, salads and desserts.

About one time a week we go out to dinner to Usa River. Costs for these meals are not covered.
