    À propos du programme

    Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue:

Mbwa Wa Africa Animal Rescue is a non-kill animal shelter and was founded in 2013 by the German couple Sandra and Jens. Sandra is mostly responsible for managing the shelter, intakes and adoptions, and Jens takes care of the clinic, campaigns and all the administrative and back office work. The project takes care of abandoned or injured street dogs and cats. Since 2015 MWA also runs rabies vaccination campaigns, spay/neuter clinics, and an education program in local schools. In 2020 we were given a new property by our partner charity four steps to freedom, who have since also sponsored all buildings placed at our rescue centre as well as crucial equipment. At the new property, we opened our own clinic to take care of injured animals and started a training program for local vet students who want to become veterinary professionals. In September 2022 also the shelter moved to this property, so the whole rescue center (including the volunteer house) is now located in one place. By now the Shelter holds about 120 dogs and 30 cats, about 30 of these animals are disabled or special needs animals. Also, these days we employ about 25 people, working in our shelter and the clinic in order to ensure that all our animals get the best treatment possible.

    About the volunteer program:
As a shelter volunteer, you will be actively involved in the daily care and wellbeing of the animals. Tasks include walking dogs, cleaning kennels, feeding, supporting animals in quarantine, assisting with enrichment activities, and giving the animals the attention, socialisation, and care they need. Volunteers also support the team in maintaining the general cleanliness and organisation of the shelter.

    Working and living environment:
The project is located in a rural area near Arusha, in the north of Tanzania, surrounded by nature with views of Mount Meru. Volunteers live on-site at The Gongo Centre in shared volunteer housing. Daily life takes place mostly outdoors within the shelter environment, which can be physically demanding and sometimes emotionally challenging.

    Team and collaboration:
Volunteers work closely with the Tanzanian shelter team, one of the founders Sandra, Volunteer coordinators Jaqueline & Vivian, as well as other international volunteers. The local team has extensive experience and plays a key role in guiding volunteers through daily routines and tasks.

    Expectations and requirements:
We expect volunteers to be motivated, flexible, and willing to actively participate in hands-on work. Working in an animal shelter in Tanzania can be physically demanding and requires resilience, as well as a genuine passion for animal welfare. A willingness to learn and support the team is most important.

Volunteers can expect to be part of a dedicated and supportive team, gain insight into animal welfare work in a developing country, and make a direct impact on the lives of rescued animals.

You should bring clothes that can get dirty and in the rainy season, you should bring boots and a rain coat.

    Journée typique

Typical Day as a Shelter Volunteer

Each day at Mbwa Wa Africa is structured but can vary depending on the number of animals, current cases, and overall workload. Below is a general outline of a typical working day:

08:30 – Start of the day
The day begins with tasks in quarantine and the clinic area, including letting out clinic patients, checking on new arrivals, and supporting basic care routines.

    10:00 – Dog walks
Volunteers begin walking dog groups. The order, duration, and routes depend on the dogs’ needs and the workload. You will be guided by the shelter team or experienced volunteers to ensure safe and structured walks.

    Late morning (if time allows)
    Additional tasks may include:

    • Socialising and training dogs
    • Brushing and basic grooming
    • Supporting animals in quarantine
    • Spending time with shy or new arrivals
    • Assisting with special care for disabled animals (e.g. mobility support, light physio)

    13:00 – Lunch break
All volunteers take a break together and discuss tasks for the afternoon.

    14:00 – Afternoon activities

    • Puppy walks and playtime
    • Enrichment activities for dogs (mental stimulation, toys, interaction)
    • Socialisation and one-on-one time with animals

    16:00 – Late afternoon tasks

    • Return to quarantine or clinic area if needed
    • Walking clinic patients or dogs that still require exercise
    • Supporting any remaining daily care tasks

17:00 – End of the day
Wrap-up of tasks and handover to the team.

    Additional Information
Tasks can vary depending on the current situation at the shelter. This may include helping with feeding, cleaning kennels, tick and flea treatments, taking photos for adoption profiles, or assisting with special cases. At any moment, new animals can enter the rescue, visitors might show up or adopters are looking for a new fury friend.

If there are very young, sick, or bottle-fed animals, volunteers may also be asked to help with additional care outside regular hours.

    Working Schedule
Volunteers typically work 5–6 days per week. As animal care is needed every day, weekends are especially important, but schedules can be arranged within the team.

Working hours are generally 08:30 to 17:00, including a lunch break, but some flexibility may be required depending on the workload and emergencies.

    Logement

The Volunteer House of Mbwa Wa Africa is located on the same compound where also the clinic and the shelter is located.
The Volunteer House has two floors. The downstairs area has three bedrooms with a total of five beds, two bathrooms, a living room and a kitchen. The rooms are simply equipped but have everything you need. The kitchen is fully equipped and in the living room there are games and books. We provide bed linen and towels.
The downstairs area is home to our resident dogs. Please respect that these dogs are at home here and leave the front door a tad bit open at night so that they do not relieve themselves inside.
The upstairs apartment is reserved for long term volunteers. Currently, our project manager with her dogs occupy this area. Please respect this space as their long term home.

Please be aware, Mbwa wa Africa is located a bit remote in the village of Sangananu. With a car or motorbike taxi the closest city, Usa River, is about 10 minutes away, 40 minutes when walking. Arusha, the bigger city, is about 40 minutes away by car, 1 to 1.5 hours with public transport. Our house is not always full, so it can be that you might be the only volunteer at a time that lives at the house. While our project manager lives upstairs in the same building and you are never completely alone in the house, the evenings are usually quiet.

    Aliments & Boissons

We will provide the basics for breakfast: coffee, tea, milk, sugar, toast, jam, vegetables and fruits. Every volunteer prepares their own breakfast as everyone gets up at a different time. Lunch at the shelter is communal. Also, in our kitchen we have a water filter where you can drink from without any concerns.

For dinner at our volunteer house we have a wonderful cook who spoils us with traditional and western meals, soups, salads and desserts.

About one time a week we go out to dinner to Usa River. Costs for these meals are not covered.
