    About the Program

Are you eager to share your time, energy, and enthusiasm with children across the world? As a childcare volunteer in Bali, you’ll have the chance to make a meaningful difference in the local community of Tabanan. Your role will include supporting daily care, organizing crafts and creative activities, and teaching English through songs and music. You'll work with children aged 1-8 years, helping them get a great head start before they begin formal schooling.

    Background to the Childcare Program

In Bali, many families, especially those in the farming and fishing industries, struggle to afford quality childcare and education. As a childcare volunteer in Bali, you’ll play a crucial role in supporting local families and childcare centers. By working alongside local staff, you’ll help ensure these children receive the care and attention they deserve.

Bali's growing tourism industry has created more opportunities for people who can speak English. As a result, children who are introduced to English at an early age can improve their future prospects and those of their families.

Early childhood education is considered vital for a child’s development, and learning a foreign language during these years can be particularly valuable. As a volunteer, you’ll focus on teaching basic English—such as colors, shapes, and animals—through engaging songs and activities. This program is a great option for those considering a gap year, with rewarding opportunities to work with children in Bali.

    Akasa Bali Foundation Daycare
In September 2011, Ketut from our local team established the Akasa Foundation in Tabanan to provide underprivileged children with free after-school education and activities. This project has been Ketut’s passion, and with the support of Akasa Foundation volunteers, it continues to grow. The Akasa Foundation currently hosts up to 55 children, aged 4-6, full of energy and ready to engage with our volunteers!

This is one of our most structured childcare placements. If you’re unsure whether you prefer teaching or childcare, this is a great option. The children are young but eager to learn the basics of English through play and songs, and they will truly appreciate your presence.

    Mutiara Ibu Daycare
Founded by a local Balinese couple, the Mutiara Ibu Daycare provides affordable childcare for up to 40 children daily. In the mornings, volunteers help create structure by leading activities and games. As the children’s ages vary, volunteers will also help teach English to older children in creative ways to prepare them for school.

In the afternoons, volunteers assist with younger children, including babies as young as 6 months, and children up to 13 years old. You’ll help during mealtimes, encourage fussy eaters, assist with bath times, and help with other daily tasks around the center.

    Immaculatta Daycare
Located just 10 minutes from the accommodation, Immaculatta was founded by a Christian church to provide childcare for working families and offer basic English lessons to older children. As a volunteer, you'll lead fun activities and games to keep the children engaged. While the staff takes care of basic needs, you’ll be the entertainer, helping with playtime and learning activities.

The morning session lasts about three hours, after which the children nap. Volunteers can recharge before the next group of children arrives in the afternoon.

    Timeus Kindergarten
Founded in 2009 by a Christian church, Timeus Kindergarten offers free care for up to 60 children each day. Volunteers play a key role in assisting staff with basic care and educational activities. Children aged 6 months to 6 years attend the center, and volunteers can help with English lessons for the younger children, encouraging them as they prepare for school.

In the afternoons, children aged 4-8 come after school, and volunteers often help with younger children during bath time, as well as providing additional support with homework for older children.

Akasa Foundation’s volunteer programs in Bali are located in the heart of Tabanan, a picturesque yet bustling town that offers a unique blend of tradition and energy.

With a population of over 350,000 people, Tabanan’s city center is home to around 10,000 residents. The town comes alive from 4 pm to midnight with a vibrant night market, where you can taste local dishes, shop for traditional clothing, and find handcrafted jewelry. Tabanan is known as the "rice bowl of Bali" due to its vast rice fields and its vital role in the island’s agricultural production. The Subak Museum, located in the area, showcases the historic Subak irrigation system, which has been used in Bali for over a millennium, since AD 600.

Volunteers typically work Monday through Thursday, with weekends free for relaxation or travel. Exploring Bali and its surroundings is a key part of the experience, and we strongly encourage it. Our local team is happy to assist with arranging activities, transportation, and accommodation, though these arrangements are generally made independently from the main program.

Transfert de l'aéroport Ngurah Rai International Airport

You should arrive into Ngurah Rai International Airport (airport code DPS) on the relevant Sunday start date. The airport pickup is available 24 hours.

On arrival a member of our local team will be at the waiting area for you holding a sign with your name on it. They will drive you straight to the Volunteer House in Tabanan where you can relax and settle.

    Logement

    Volunteer House

During your time on the Bali volunteer program you will live in one of our Volunteer Houses, which are located in Tabanan. Here you will find local restaurants, convenience stores and ATMs. Tabanan is a more traditional town, so you won’t find many other tourists around. You’ll be living with other volunteers from around the world, so you’ll make plenty of friends along the way.

The accommodation is basic but comfortable with free Wi-Fi. Each room has bunk beds with up to 8 people per room in same-sex rooms. Volunteers are provided with air conditioning in the room and their own mosquito net or curtains (to avoid the mosquitos) and bed linen. Bathrooms are shared, with a shower and western style toilet. The water is often cold, but this shouldn’t be a problem if you volunteer in Bali, as the climate is hot and humid all year round!

We encourage you to bring some small padlocks and/or store any valuables within the lockers provided within the volunteer accommodation, however, volunteers are encouraged to only bring essential items during their volunteer work in Bali. There will also be fridge space available for volunteers to store any items they need to keep chilled.

International volunteers have several communal spaces to relax, hang out with new friends or prepare lesson plans if you are teaching English.

The Volunteer House is located right next to where our local team live. Although volunteers have their own private space there is still the security of living next to our host family who can assist you if need be. It is also a great way to learn more about Balinese culture, get immersed in the local community and practise your new-found language skills!

Some of our projects are within walking distance of our Volunteer House and some are not. We will take you to and from your volunteer placement each day if it is not within walking distance, via minivan or private car, and the cost of this service is included in your Program Fee.

Please note during our busier times of the year we will be running multiple accommodation sites all of which are located in Tabanan. All the Volunteer Houses will provide the core features you would expect but will all have small differences in terms of location, amenities, capacity etc. Due to the popularity of our Bali programs we are unable to take specific requests in terms of the exact property you will be staying in and you are assigned a house on arrival. We are always able to accommodate friends and small groups in the same accommodation.

    Aliments & Boissons

You will be provided with three freshly prepared meals per day. Most meals are traditional Indonesian dishes that can be typically quite spicy. Balinese cuisine consists of a lot of rice and the meat is mainly fish or chicken – vegetarian options are always available. A weekly menu has been introduced that so you will know in advance what is on the menu for that day.

There is a large choice of restaurants and local warungs (authentic, local food stalls) in Tabanan. The food on offer is traditional Balinese cuisine – typically amazing and mainly vegetarian! There may also be a western option served once or twice every week and there are restaurants serving western food available around a 20 minute walk from the Volunteer House.

Other Things to Consider When Working with Children in Bali

    Return Airport Transfer
Your return airport transfer is not included in the program fee. Most volunteers use ridesharing apps or private taxis. If you’re traveling around Bali during your final days, the cost of transport can often be shared with other participants heading to the airport.

    Major Holiday Destination
Bali is a popular tourist destination, and while it’s a great place to volunteer, some participants may feel less engaged with the project work compared to volunteering in other locations like Ghana, Tanzania, or India, where there may be a more obvious need for international volunteers. If you’re looking to travel as part of your experience, you might want to consider volunteering for a shorter period or choosing a destination with a greater emphasis on community need.

    Resources
Resources at childcare centers in Bali can sometimes be limited. Volunteers are encouraged to bring materials to help maximize their impact. Preparing in advance will ensure you get the most out of your volunteer experience in Bali.

    Placement Settings
The Akasa Foundation does not offer volunteer placements in orphanages. Studies show that orphanage volunteering can contribute to a system that separates children from their families, leading to potential risks of neglect and abuse. Instead, we focus on supporting projects where children return home each day, ensuring a safe, responsible, and sustainable approach to childcare.

    Weekends
Volunteer work in Bali runs from Monday to Thursday, leaving Fridays to Sundays free for travel or relaxation. Most participants use this time to explore Bali, and we provide a Bali Weekend Travel Guide for suggestions on things to do. Additionally, we offer two weekend trips: the Gili Paradise Island Trip and the Ubud Trip, which are available every month.
