    À propos du programme

Being a dog in Sri Lanka can be very challenging. As a Sri Lanka dog rescue volunteer, one of the first things you'll notice is the large number of stray dogs roaming the streets and beaches. Without access to food, shelter, or proper care, these dogs face shortened lifespans, with the added danger of rabies becoming a rising issue in the country. By volunteering, you can help protect and care for these dogs while improving the relationship between animals and humans in the community.

BACKGROUND TO THE DOG RESCUE PROGRAM

Sri Lanka is seeing a growing population of street dogs, which leads to a number of risks including poor treatment, severe injuries, malnutrition, untreated diseases, and the spread of rabies. Rabies, a fatal disease transmitted by animal bites or contact with open wounds, is especially prevalent among street dogs in Sri Lanka. This has resulted in a significant number of dog bites, which is concerning both for locals and tourists. The rise of rabies also burdens the healthcare system with high treatment costs.

To address this, the Sri Lankan government has adopted more humane methods to control the street dog population and prevent rabies, such as neutering and vaccinating strays. These efforts have led to a decrease in rabies-related deaths. Our goal is to continue supporting these initiatives through volunteer work, providing essential vaccinations and neutering to manage the stray dog population and reduce the spread of diseases like rabies.

Many female strays produce multiple litters each year, leaving puppies at risk of disease, malnutrition, and accidents. This is where volunteers come in, providing a safe haven for abandoned dogs and helping improve the community’s awareness of animal welfare.

    DOG RESCUE VOLUNTEER PLACEMENT EXAMPLE

    Bring Them Home Dog Shelter

As a volunteer in Sri Lanka, you’ll help improve the well-being of street dogs by providing daily care, vaccinations, rehabilitation, and rehoming. The shelter offers a safe environment for sick, injured, or disabled dogs. Your assistance allows the project to care for more dogs and prevent the spread of rabies in the community.

The shelter has an on-call rescue facility to transport injured, disabled, or abandoned dogs. These dogs undergo health checks and receive necessary treatments. Volunteers will have the opportunity to assist the local vet with check-ups, vaccinations, and minor medical procedures. It’s important to follow the local coordinator’s guidance before interacting with new dogs, as they may need to be isolated for vaccinations upon arrival.

Once these dogs are fully vaccinated, they will integrate with the other dogs at the shelter. The shelter also works to find new homes for healthy, vaccinated dogs, providing education to new pet owners about proper care.

As a volunteer, you can contribute to animal welfare education in the local community, improving people’s attitudes toward and treatment of dogs. This outreach aims to create long-term positive changes in how animals are treated at the community level.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN VOLUNTEERING WITH DOGS IN SRI LANKA

    • Experience – If you’re a veterinary student, you may have the opportunity to assist with more advanced tasks, including treating sick or injured dogs and participating in vaccinations or neutering procedures, depending on your experience and qualifications.
    • Volunteer Duties – Volunteers can expect to care for about 15 dogs at the shelter at any given time. You’ll interact with vaccinated dogs through enrichment activities and daily care. While many of the dogs are friendly, some may become excitable and jump on volunteers, so it’s important to stay alert and follow the guidance of the local team. Always prioritize safety and avoid getting involved in any dog play fights.

By volunteering, you’ll be helping improve the lives of Sri Lanka’s street dogs and making a positive impact on the community, while experiencing the country’s rich culture and beauty.

    Top Destination

Sri Lanka is often regarded as one of the best volunteer destinations due to the exceptional local support, great value for money, and the overall experience in Ambalangoda. The local team goes above and beyond to ensure that every volunteer has an unforgettable experience, which is reflected in the positive feedback received. This makes it an ideal choice for first-time travellers seeking extra support, a variety of organised weekend trips, and the opportunity to participate in meaningful local initiatives in an exotic setting.

    Return Airport Transfer

Your return airport transfer is not included in your Program Fee. However, our local team can assist with arranging transfers to the airport or other destinations from the volunteer accommodation. It’s more flexible to make these arrangements once you’re in Sri Lanka, as travel plans can change, and you might be able to coordinate with others on similar flight schedules. The cost will vary depending on your transport method and final destination, and if you’re traveling with other participants, it can often be shared. We strongly advise against using public transport or ridesharing apps for your airport transfer, as while they may be cheaper, they are less convenient and pose additional safety risks.

    Weekends

Weekends in Sri Lanka are free, allowing you to relax or explore the country. Most participants take this opportunity to travel, while others enjoy downtime at the volunteer accommodation. We provide a Sri Lanka Weekend Travel Guide with top tips for making the most of your weekends. Additionally, before you depart for Sri Lanka, you can sign up for one of our exciting weekend trips, including the Adventure Hill & Country Trip, the Cultural Triangle & Elephants Trip, and the Maldives Chill Out Trip. These trips run every month, giving you plenty of chances to join in. Your project work is from Monday to Friday, so you’ll have plenty of time to experience Sri Lanka’s beauty and culture.

    Project Flexibility

This volunteer project operates in the mornings, giving you the opportunity to participate in teaching projects during the afternoon. A minimum commitment of one week is required for each project, and you can finalize these arrangements once you’re in Sri Lanka. There are no additional costs, and we always welcome extra support for the community-based projects.

Volunteers are based in Ambalangoda, a lively town on the South West Coast of Sri Lanka, just a 5-minute tuk tuk ride from the beach. The town has all the amenities you might need, including banks, hospitals, shops, and a popular ice cream shop. Ambalangoda also features a central bus and train station, offering excellent transport links to major destinations.

Traditionally a fishing community, Ambalangoda is also famous as the main production center for demonic wooden masks. These masks, once worn by performers in Kolam and other southern Sri Lankan dances, are now primarily sold as souvenirs. Many local families hang a mask on their front doors to ward off evil spirits.

Transfert de l'aéroport Bandaranaike International Airport

You should arrive into Bandaranaike International Airport (airport code CMB) on the Saturday. The airport pickup is available 24 hours.

On arrival a member of our local team will be at the waiting area for you holding a sign with your name on it. They will drive you to the Volunteer House in Ambalangoda where you can relax and settle in. This journey takes around 2 hours.

    Logement

During your time on the Sri Lanka volunteer program, you will live in our Volunteer House just outside of central Ambalangoda, in a peaceful part of town on the south coast of Sri Lanka. It is just a 10 minute tuk-tuk journey into the main town, where you can find ATMs, supermarkets and local restaurants. You’ll be living with other volunteers from around the world, so you’ll make plenty of friends along the way!

The accommodation is basic but comfortable and clean, fitting up to 10 people per room in single-sex bedrooms with bunk beds. Volunteers are provided with air conditioning in the room and bed linen. You will have cupboard space to store clothes and accessories as well as a personal locker to store your valuables. However, volunteers are still encouraged to only bring essential items during their volunteer work in Sri Lanka.

The bathrooms are shared, each with a shower and western style toilet. The water is cold but this shouldn’t be a problem if you volunteer in Sri Lanka, as the climate is hot and humid all year round!

The house has free Wi-Fi available and a communal area for international volunteers to relax, hang out with new friends or prepare lesson plans if you are teaching English. There is also a refrigerator to store any items you need to keep chilled. A member of our local team will also live at the house. This ensures you have round the clock support and security.

We will transport you via tuk-tuk or private car to and from your volunteer placement, which is usually between 5-30 minutes away from the house. This service is included in your Program Fee.

During our busiest months you may be placed at alternative accommodation. For instance, you could be placed in one of our secondary Volunteer Houses.

    Aliments & Boissons

You will be served three meals per day at the Volunteer House. Most meals are traditional Sri Lankan dishes that can be typically quite spicy. Sri Lankan cuisine consists of a lot of rice and the meat is mainly fish or chicken – vegetarian options are always available. A weekly menu has been introduced that blends Sri Lanka cuisine with Western cuisine so you will know in advance what is on the menu for that day! Below is an example of the meals we serve our volunteers:

Breakfast – Egg, toast, fruit with tea.
Lunch – Dhal and spinach curry, poppadums, paprika tofu and rice.
Dinner – Mixed vegetable noodles, tomato curry, omelette and poppadoms.

All meals are freshly prepared each day. If you fancy some western comforts, you will find plenty of restaurants serving western meals in the nearby town of Hikkaduwa. Hikkaduwa is a 20 minute journey from Ambalangoda and the cost to get there by tuk tuk is around £3 per way. This is a popular place that volunteers go to in the evening, as it is a trendy backpackers town.

    * Please inform us in your application if you have any dietary requirements. Couples, families and older volunteers will be accommodated to suit their needs.
