À propos du programme

We are in need of more hands and financial aid. Choosing to join the volunteer program will help the shelter become a sustainable, safe and secure place for dogs for many years to come. For now, Annette (funder) is able to sustain the shelter financially with her savings. She has dedicated more than 13 years and kept the shelter running 24/7, 365 days every year.

The shelter is divided into three sections, and each section is again divided into enclosures, each housing between 2-5 dogs. The dogs sleep, eat and play in their own enclosures and are taken out at least once a day for exercise. This is done one group at a time. Whilst the dogs are out, their enclosure is cleaned of dog poo and the water bowls cleaned and filled. When they return from their walk, the dogs are given their food. This has a specific order and each dog has a specified amount of food.

Puerto Escondido is hot all year round and the shelters are outside, some have only little shade and can be dusty during the dry season. The rainy season from May to October can be very humid and wet. You will most likely be doing active, manual work so be prepared to get hot, dirty and sweaty!

List of the daily tasks

    • Assisting with the daily walks
    • Cleaning each enclosure of dog poo whilst the dogs are out walking
    • Cleaning and refilling the water bowls
    • Giving the dogs their food - this will involve learning names, feeding order, and quantities
    • Giving the dogs love, cuddles and affection!
    • Assist with administering medicine or accompanying dogs to the vets
    • Help with rescuing or collecting stray dogs that are in need of help

Remember!

The dogs we work with have been rescued from the street, many have been mistreated and as a result are wary of humans. They are not aggressive but can be rather shy the first time you meet them. Some have psychological problems and traumas.

During your first week you will always be accompanied by an experienced volunteer when entering the shelter, until you get to know all our 4 legged friends and feel comfortable.

Please always treat them with respect! Approach calmly, get down to their level and let them sniff you before touching them – earn their trust! Some will jump up but they just want to play and be loved and with time you will be able to give them the attention and affection they deserve!

Perros en Puerto is a registered non-profit organization located in Puerto Escondido, a lovely chill surfer town on Mexico’s Pacific coast in the state of Oaxaca. There is a large community of foreigners living and visiting this part of Mexico.

Founded in 2008, Perros en Puerto (PEP) has made it its mission to help, rescue, provide safe refuge and care for those dogs and to create a community that is more compassion towards animal needs. Dogs kept on hot cement roofs without shade and water or tied up on short chains, others left to roam the street foraging for food, injured by cars, beaten, neglected and/or abandoned by their owners are a common sight. The association is led by Annette who is supported by dedicated local and foreign volunteers.

Most of the funds come from Annette’s (founder) savings and donations. She is supported by volunteers to accomplish taking care of the facilities, rescuing, sterilizing, vet appointments, look for or be a foster home and/or get adopted.

The shelter and dog enclosures are thought out and build for dogs to be in good mental and physical health. Our pups are happy and may stay at the shelter until they are adopted, fostered or pass away.

If you LOVE dogs, have good animal and people skills, are committed and confident and think you have something to offer to our shelter dogs and/or the community, come and join us.

Initially I would stay for three weeks, but I extended it to six because I loved it. The work is a steady routine and not difficult. Aside from cleaning and feeding, there is plenty of time to hang out with the dogs and to fall in love with them. The woman who runs it, Annette, is very kind and a ...
