    À propos du programme

Volunteer as an English teacher in Bali and help local children develop important language skills for their future. English is essential for success in Bali’s growing tourism industry, and speaking it well opens doors to better job opportunities. By conversing with native speakers, students improve their confidence and ability, gaining skills that are crucial in today’s world.

    Background to the Teaching Program

English is an important language for communication in Bali, especially in businesses that cater to tourists, like shops, restaurants, and hotels. Bali is a popular travel destination, and knowing English helps locals connect with visitors from around the world. PMGY’s teaching program gives you the chance to make a real impact by teaching English to children in Tabanan, a rural area that’s seeing rapid growth due to tourism.

Although English is taught in schools by local teachers, the chance to practice with native speakers is invaluable. By volunteering, you’ll give students the skills they need to succeed in their studies and future careers.

    Volunteer Teaching Placement Examples

As a volunteer, you’ll work at different schools and projects in Tabanan, focusing on helping students improve their English. Here are some examples of where you could teach:

    1. Akasa Kindergarten English Class
The Akasa Foundation runs a community learning center where volunteers teach young children English. The goal is to prepare preschoolers for formal schooling and provide extra support to children who need it. The center is located just a 5-minute walk from the volunteer accommodation.

    2. Akasa English Course
This is an after-school program where children from the village come to learn English. Volunteers teach creative and fun lessons to boost the students' confidence in speaking English. The classes are held in the Akasa Learning Centre, just a 2-minute walk from the volunteer house.

    3. Elementary & Junior High Schools
Volunteers teach English at several elementary and junior high schools in Tabanan, working with students ranging from 6 to 15 years old. These schools benefit from having native English speakers in the classroom, helping the students practice pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversation. Teachers and students alike enjoy learning together, and the children often show their appreciation in their own traditional way.

    4. Kaniva Hospitality University
At Kaniva Hospitality University, volunteers teach English to young adults training for careers in tourism. These students dream of working in international destinations like Dubai or Japan, and learning English helps them prepare for a career in the hospitality industry.

    5. Timeus Special Education Program
For older students with special educational needs, volunteers spend time helping them practice English and build confidence. The students at Timeus have varying abilities, and the lessons are designed to be adaptable and engaging.

Things to Consider for Teaching in Bali:

    Return Airport Transfer
Your return airport transfer is not included in the program fee. Most volunteers use ridesharing apps or private taxis to get to the airport. Costs vary depending on your travel plans and how you share transport with other volunteers.

    Experience
No teaching experience is required. The opportunity to interact with native English speakers is valuable in itself. Volunteers who are creative, patient, and enthusiastic can make a big impact.

    TEFL Course
While not required, we recommend completing a 60-hour accredited TEFL course to help you feel more prepared for your teaching role. This affordable online course is available for just $150 USD.

    Teaching Resources
Teaching resources can be limited in Bali, so we encourage volunteers to bring materials with them. Preparing in advance will help ensure you have everything you need to teach effectively.

    Weekends and Travel
You’ll work Monday to Thursday, leaving Fridays free. Weekends are your chance to relax or explore Bali. You can visit beautiful beaches, cultural sites, or take part in weekend trips to places like the Gili Islands or Ubud. Our team can help arrange weekend activities, but most travel is independent.

    Journée typique

As a volunteer teaching English in Bali, your role is to help local communities by teaching children and boosting their confidence in speaking English. This skill is key for their future and can open up more opportunities.

The program runs from Monday to Thursday, with Friday being optional but encouraged. You’ll teach in two daily sessions: 8am to 12pm in the morning and 1pm to 4pm in the afternoon. Your schedule will depend on your placement, and if the project isn’t within walking distance, transport is provided by bemo, taking no more than 20 minutes.

    Your Teaching Schedule

You may be teaching solo, in pairs, or in small groups. Most volunteers are scheduled to teach two or three classes per day depending on the need and number of volunteers. You’ll likely rotate between two placement locations during the week, with Akasa Foundation being the main project.

    Akasa Foundation Programs

The Akasa English Course runs four different sessions each week:

    • Kindergarten (4-6 years)

    • AEC Kids (7-9 years)

    • AEC Elementary (10-12 years)

    • AEC Middle (13-17 years)

These classes take place at the Akasa Learning Centre, located just a short walk from the volunteer accommodation. Depending on the number of students and volunteers, you may teach smaller groups or one-on-one to ensure every child gets the most out of their lessons.

    Teaching Preschoolers

Preschool is a key time for learning a new language. In the Kindergarten classes, you’ll teach basic vocabulary like colours, shapes, and animals. You’ll need to be patient and creative, and a local teacher will guide you. As children progress, the content will introduce basic sentence structures in the Beginner’s class.

    Advanced Community Classes

For older students, advanced community classes make learning English fun after a long day at school. You’ll use games, art, songs, and sports to keep the children engaged. Often, you’ll teach alongside another volunteer to make lessons interactive.

    Classroom Dynamics

You’ll be working with 60-100 children each day, ranging in age from 3 years old to young adults. Balinese children are eager to learn, but they can get excited, so it’s important to keep the class focused. Local teachers will be there to help, but your role is to inspire and give students confidence in speaking English.

Having a native English speaker in the classroom helps improve their pronunciation and overall language skills. Your presence also benefits local teachers, who may look to you for ideas and help in improving their own teaching methods.

    Making Lessons Fun

To keep your lessons engaging, try using educational games like word searches, Hangman, or team quizzes. You can also teach through songs, art, and music. These activities make learning enjoyable and help students remember new words. They’ll also benefit from learning about different cultures and teaching styles through you.

    Lesson Planning & Resources

You’ll have the flexibility to choose what to teach, though there may be a general curriculum or lesson plans to guide you. You’ll have access to resources at the PMGY office to help with lesson planning, and children will be given exercise books to support their learning.

Every week, there’s a lesson planning session where volunteers share ideas, plan together, and get advice on how to improve. It’s a great chance to collaborate and learn from one another.

Through this program, you’ll have the chance to make a real difference in the lives of children in Bali, helping them gain confidence in speaking English and improving their future prospects. Your creativity and passion will inspire them to reach their full potential.

Akasa Foundation’s volunteer programs in Bali are located in the heart of Tabanan, a picturesque yet bustling town that offers a unique blend of tradition and energy.

With a population of over 350,000 people, Tabanan’s city center is home to around 10,000 residents. The town comes alive from 4 pm to midnight with a vibrant night market, where you can taste local dishes, shop for traditional clothing, and find handcrafted jewelry. Tabanan is known as the "rice bowl of Bali" due to its vast rice fields and its vital role in the island’s agricultural production. The Subak Museum, located in the area, showcases the historic Subak irrigation system, which has been used in Bali for over a millennium, since AD 600.

Volunteers typically work Monday through Thursday, with weekends free for relaxation or travel. Exploring Bali and its surroundings is a key part of the experience, and we strongly encourage it. Our local team is happy to assist with arranging activities, transportation, and accommodation, though these arrangements are generally made independently from the main program.

Transfert de l'aéroport Ngurah Rai International Airport

You should arrive into Ngurah Rai International Airport (airport code DPS) on the relevant Sunday start date. The airport pickup is available 24 hours.

On arrival a member of our local team will be at the waiting area for you holding a sign with your name on it. They will drive you straight to the Volunteer House in Tabanan where you can relax and settle.

    Logement

    Volunteer House

During your time on the Bali volunteer program you will live in one of our Volunteer Houses, which are located in Tabanan. Here you will find local restaurants, convenience stores and ATMs. Tabanan is a more traditional town, so you won’t find many other tourists around. You’ll be living with other volunteers from around the world, so you’ll make plenty of friends along the way.

The accommodation is basic but comfortable with free Wi-Fi. Each room has bunk beds with up to 8 people per room in same-sex rooms. Volunteers are provided with air conditioning in the room and their own mosquito net or curtains (to avoid the mosquitos) and bed linen. Bathrooms are shared, with a shower and western style toilet. The water is often cold, but this shouldn’t be a problem if you volunteer in Bali, as the climate is hot and humid all year round!

We encourage you to bring some small padlocks and/or store any valuables within the lockers provided within the volunteer accommodation, however, volunteers are encouraged to only bring essential items during their volunteer work in Bali. There will also be fridge space available for volunteers to store any items they need to keep chilled.

International volunteers have several communal spaces to relax, hang out with new friends or prepare lesson plans if you are teaching English.

The Volunteer House is located right next to where our local team live. Although volunteers have their own private space there is still the security of living next to our host family who can assist you if need be. It is also a great way to learn more about Balinese culture, get immersed in the local community and practise your new-found language skills!

Some of our projects are within walking distance of our Volunteer House and some are not. We will take you to and from your volunteer placement each day if it is not within walking distance, via minivan or private car, and the cost of this service is included in your Program Fee.

Please note during our busier times of the year we will be running multiple accommodation sites all of which are located in Tabanan. All the Volunteer Houses will provide the core features you would expect but will all have small differences in terms of location, amenities, capacity etc. Due to the popularity of our Bali programs we are unable to take specific requests in terms of the exact property you will be staying in and you are assigned a house on arrival. We are always able to accommodate friends and small groups in the same accommodation.

    Aliments & Boissons

You will be provided with three freshly prepared meals per day. Most meals are traditional Indonesian dishes that can be typically quite spicy. Balinese cuisine consists of a lot of rice and the meat is mainly fish or chicken – vegetarian options are always available. A weekly menu has been introduced that so you will know in advance what is on the menu for that day.

There is a large choice of restaurants and local warungs (authentic, local food stalls) in Tabanan. The food on offer is traditional Balinese cuisine – typically amazing and mainly vegetarian! There may also be a western option served once or twice every week and there are restaurants serving western food available around a 20 minute walk from the Volunteer House.
