    À propos du programme

Join the dedicated team at Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary (LiWiSa), the only multi-species rescue center in West Africa.

Since 2018, we have worked in direct partnership with Liberia’s Forestry Development Authority (FDA) and the Wildlife Crime Task Force to provide professional care for animals recovered from the illegal wildlife trade.

As a volunteer, you will be fully immersed in frontline conservation while working with diverse native species including Endangered White-bellied pangolins, primates, raptors, and crocodiles. Your role is essential to our mission of rewilding as you assist in intensive rehabilitation protocols to prepare animals for release into protected areas like Warkolor Forest and Gola National Park.

Major highlights of this program include the Sooty Mangabey Project, where you assist in monitoring and preparing large groups of primates for large-scale releases, and our Pangolin Walks, which involve escorting rescued pangolins into the forest for natural foraging and behavioral data collection. You will also contribute to One Health research by monitoring zoonotic diseases and help plan our learning hub to teach sustainable coexistence to local schools and visitors. Throughout your stay, you will work directly alongside our professional animal caretakers and veterinary staff.

We require high levels of reliability and awareness, as you must follow all safety protocols strictly due to the inherent risks of working with wildlife. Your daily responsibilities demand versatility, ranging from feeding, cleaning, and enclosure maintenance to construction and supporting the vet with infant or medical care. We also value creativity for tasks like designing food enrichment, creating educational banners, and developing sanctuary programs. While we highly value those from scientific or veterinary backgrounds, we are open to all dedicated volunteers looking to gain hands-on professional experience in tropical conservation and rewilding strategy. To participate, you must bring comfortable, safe work shoes or hiking boots, rainboots can be purchased locally for approximately 10 USD. All specific tools for sanctuary maintenance and animal care are provided on-site.

    Journée typique

Your days are a blend of structured husbandry, professional conservation operations, and community outreach. The morning begins early in the tropical humidity; if you are on the nursery shift, you start with the early feeding for orphaned infants like pangolin pups or small primates. Otherwise, you can take a gym session or a morning swim in the Atlantic Ocean, just 100 meters away. Our working day starts at 8.00am when the local staff arrives and we hold a morning meeting to discuss animal health updates and medical priorities. Following this, the team moves into essential sanitation, cleaning the quarantine units, clinic, and nursery, while checking all sanctuary enclosures for security.

Feeding time follows, where we prepare specialized diets for our 150+ residents, including pangolins, antelopes, birds, small carnivores, and our dwarf and nile crocodiles. After a quick breakfast break at 10:00am, we move into general operations. You might assist with enclosure repairs, construction, or specialized animal care. We are also looking to expand our on-site gardening and more art/decoration into the sanctuary, so volunteers with a green thumb or creative skills are highly encouraged to help us beautify the space and grow supplemental food for the animals (and us).

Lunchbreak is from 12:00 - 1:30pm at the Libassa Ecolodge, where fresh meals are prepared for the team and you can cool off in the pool. In the afternoons, the focus often shifts to our broader mission. We are currently developing more robust educational programs for visiting schools and universities, and we need help designing these curricula and teaching awareness regarding the illegal wildlife trade. You may also find yourself creating social media content, attending meetings with local partners, or driving into Monrovia for supplies and government meetings.

While the work is endless, we remain on call for wildlife arrests and emergency rescues, with animal releases typically occurring once or twice per month. At 5pm we finish the day, you can choose to eat at the lodge or use the volunteer kitchen. Evenings are for unwinding—relaxing at the pool or beach, reading, watching movies.. You have one day off per week. Wherever we go, we can take you, but we cannot offer any trips - it's dependent on our availability.

The sanctuary is located right on the grounds of the Libassa Ecolodge, which means you have full access to a level of comfort not usually found in remote conservation work.

    • Beach and Lagoon Life: The ocean is only 100 meters away. You can spend your mornings or evenings swimming in the Atlantic or walking along the empty shoreline. If the ocean is too rough, we have a calm lagoon right behind us—perfect for grabbing one of the sanctuary's kayaks.

    • Ecolodge Amenities: You are welcome to use the lodge’s facilities, including the beach, relaxation areas, and five swimming pools. It’s a great place to grab a drink, meet other travelers, or just lie down with a book.

    • Exploring the Area & Culture: We can arrange for a local Liberian tour guide to pick you up and take you on a dedicated historical or cultural tour, however, that is at your own expense.

    • Excursions & Days Off: On your weekly day off, you can head into Monrovia to experience the bustling city life and historical sites, or take a long weekend to check out the world-class surf scene at Robertsport.

    • On-Site Fun: Evenings at the sanctuary are usually pretty laid back. Since we’re a small, tight-knit team, there’s always someone up for a game of cards or a late-night swim. Whether you want to be active or just disappear into nature for a few hours, you’ve got the best of both worlds here.

Our program fees are structured to provide you with a high standard of living while directly supporting our conservation work. We provide access to the Libassa Ecolodge facilities where standard guest rates are 125 USD per night. While volunteer housing is smaller and more basic than the guest suites, you enjoy the full range of amenities at a fraction of the cost.

Because the sanctuary and the ecolodge are separate entities, a portion of your fee covers the professional lodging and daily meals provided by the lodge. This partnership allows us to offer a level of comfort and security that is rare for African field-based volunteer programs.

Transfert de l'aéroport Roberts International Airport

A member of our team will meet you directly at the exit of Roberts International Airport (ROB). As it is a small airport, you can't miss us. Please simply notify us of your arrival time in advance so we can arrange the pickup. From the airport, it is a 30-minute drive to the sanctuary.

    Logement

Enjoy a small private, basic room with a private bathroom. A one-minute walk from the beach on one side and the lagoon on the other.

    Aliments & Boissons

You are provided with three prepared meals a day at the Libassa Ecolodge, primarily consisting of "Western-style" dishes. If you prefer to cook for yourself or want a specific snack, you also have full access to the sanctuary kitchen. We regularly order fresh local vegetables and fruits for the team, so you’ll always have healthy, seasonal produce on hand.

    Informations sur l'arrivée

You can join our program at any time throughout the year. We don't have fixed start dates or specific arrival windows, as the needs of the sanctuary are constant and rescues happen year-round.

Flights and Pickup Most volunteers fly into Roberts International Airport (ROB) via Brussels Airlines, which offers direct flights from Europe. These flights often arrive late in the evening or in the middle of the night. Don't worry about the timing—we will be there to pick you up at the airport regardless of when you land and bring you directly to the sanctuary.

Vaccinations and Health Your health and the safety of our animals are top priorities.

    • Yellow Fever: This is a mandatory requirement by the Liberian government to enter the country. You must bring your yellow vaccination card with you.

    • Rabies & Tetanus: These are strictly required for anyone working hands-on with our animals. Because we handle rescues from the wild and the illegal trade, these vaccinations are non-negotiable for your safety.

Visa Process Once your placement is confirmed, we will provide you with an official Letter of Invitation from LiWiSa. However, you are responsible for the actual visa application process. You will need to contact your nearest Liberian Embassy or Consulate to obtain your visa before travel. We recommend starting this process at least a month in advance to ensure everything is ready for your departure.
