    About Helping Hands 4 Wildlife
Helping Hands 4 Wildlife is the longest registered wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Mpumalanga, South Africa. We are located at the foot of Mount Hlumu near Badplaas. Our focus is on vervet monkeys. Most of them come to us as tiny babies, after their mothers were hit by cars, attacked by dogs or killed as pests. We raise them, help them grow into a troop and release them back into the wild together.

We also take in other wildlife in need, for example bushbabies, mongooses, genets, jackals and servals, etc.

As a non-profit organisation without government funding, we rely on volunteers and donations. Your contribution directly helps cover the daily care of up to 100 animals.

    What you will do

    • Prepare food and feed the animals
    • Clean enclosures and work areas
    • Build enrichment that keeps the monkeys busy and their wild skills sharp
    • Help with rescues and releases whenever they happen
    • In baby season, help in the nursery with bottle feeding and care, until the babies are ready for a monkey surrogate mother

Some days are hard, physical work, others are quiet, and most of them end with dinner together and a lot of stories. For a few weeks, you’ll be part of our family on the farm.

    What you will learn

    • How rehabilitation works, from arrival to release
    • How vervets live, communicate and learn from each other
    • How to read monkey faces and body language
    • How to plan and build enrichment
    • How a rehabilitation centre runs day to day

    Your first week
When you arrive, we show you around and introduce you to the animals, the rules and the team. In your first days, someone always works with you and shows you every task. Nobody is left alone.

    Climate and what to bring
Summer (September to March) is hot, up to 40°C, with afternoon storms. Winter (April to August) brings sunny days around 20°C and cold nights close to 0°C.

Bring durable work clothes, closed work shoes, warm clothes for the evenings, a rain jacket in summer, sunscreen, a hat, a torch, insect repellent, a refillable water bottle, a universal plug adapter and surgical masks for working in our Rehab.

    Good to know

    • Badplaas is not in a malaria area. If you plan a trip to Kruger National Park, ask your doctor about malaria prevention.
    • Trips to Kruger National Park and Blyde River Canyon can be organised at reduced rates.
    • Extras on site can be paid by card or PayPal.
    • Visa requirements depend on your nationality. Travel insurance is recommended.

On weekends, we usually only do the essentials, feeding and cleaning. Breakfast is at 9:00 and work starts at 10:00. Once that’s done, the rest of the day is yours. If you stay longer than two to three weeks, you also get days off.

    Everyday tasks

    • Preparing and serving food, and sorting new food deliveries
    • Cleaning enclosures and work areas
    • Preparing and setting up enrichment
    • Helping with medication
    • Building and repairs, such as enclosures, fences, etc.
    • Rescues and releases, whenever they happen
    • Land maintenance, such as weeding, raking and burning fire breaks

In baby season (about November to May)

    • Bottle feeding and caring for orphaned babies
    • Watching over the nursery and making sure the babies eat, sleep and play well

    Extra work

    • Collecting and sorting food donations
    • Gardening in our vegetable garden, which helps us become more self-sufficient
    • Fundraising ideas

After work and on weekends, you can relax at the pool, hike up Mount Hlumu, walk to the waterfalls nearby or spend a day at the resort next door. Other trips don’t have to be on a weekend and can be planned together with other volunteers.

Forever Resorts borders our farm and is perfect for a day out, with natural hot spring pools, a water park, a spa, quad biking and horse riding. We drop you off and pick you up for a small petrol contribution.

    Kruger National Park
It would be a shame to come all the way to South Africa and miss the Big Five. We organise Kruger trips of different lengths, from day trips to multiple nights, with game drives, bush walks, night drives or sunrise and sunset drives.

    Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland)
The border is only 45 minutes away. There you can visit the famous Ngwenya glass factory, a candle factory and many beautiful waterfalls and dams.

    A local school
You’re also welcome to join us when we visit a small rural school nearby. The children are always happy to have visitors.

These trips cost extra and are easy to arrange once you’re here.

Every chalet has its own bathroom with a hot shower and a flushing toilet, plus a veranda with a fridge, a microwave and a kettle for your first coffee of the day.

Bed linen and towels are provided. Once a week, our staff cleans your chalet, changes the bedding and does your laundry.

The lodge is the heart of the farm. This is where we eat, relax and spend the evenings together, with a pool table, a dart board and a big TV for  movie nights. In summer, the pool is the best place to cool down after a long day. WiFi is available in the lodge.

    Power cuts
South Africa sometimes has scheduled power cuts, known as load shedding. We can’t always predict them, but we have solar lights, so you’re never left in the dark.

All meals are cooked by our Staff. We care about healthy, balanced food, and we cook fresh and varied meals every day, with plenty of vegetables and fruit. The food is tasty, and it gives you energy for long working days. Meals are served in the lodge, and on sunny days you’re welcome to eat outside with us.

    Informations sur l'arrivée

    Getting here
We recommend flying into OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg and taking a shuttle to Milly’s in Machadadorp, where we pick you up. The easiest options are City Bug and LimeTime, both with multiple direct transfers from the airport a day. Book online early to secure your seat.

The shuttle from the airport to Milly’s takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, so try to land in the morning or early afternoon. If your flight arrives too late for the last shuttle, stay overnight near the airport and take the first shuttle the next morning. There are several safe and affordable hotels at OR Tambo.

    Pickup point
We collect you at Milly’s bus stop, a safe and easy-to-find place.

    If the shuttle is full
Shuttles fill up quickly over the holidays, especially from November to February, so book early. If needed, we’re happy to suggest other options.

    Before you arrive
Once your booking is confirmed, we’ll contact you directly, so we can stay in touch and get updates before your arrival.
