À propos du programme

Contribute to sustainable and long-term gender equality initiatives in Siem Reap, a bustling city in Cambodia. Our program aims to sustainably equip these women with the necessary skills and tools to help eradicate poverty and increase education levels throughout the country in the long term.

Teach English lessons and life-skills workshops to help the women develop personally and professionally. Your contribution will play a significant role in increasing the local women’s access to education while improving their employment opportunities and quality of life. This program is aligned with a number of UN Sustainable Development Goals, with Goal #5 – Gender Equality being the main objective.

Siem Reap itself is a tranquil town with many attractions to offer including great views of the Mekong River and wide boulevards lined by restaurants, cafe’s and colourful colonial buildings. You can also visit the local freshwater seafood market which boasts all types of delicacies from juicy snails to fresh fish and shrimp.

Increasing Employability: Pre Departure Program Training:

Our programs are not only life-changing experiences but are also designed to help participants increase their employability. We have developed a curriculum to be completed prior to arrival in the country in order to ensure that more time is dedicated to program work once you commence your volunteer program.

Eight weeks prior to your start date, you will complete the following online courses in preparation for your in-country program:

  • PRE-DEPARTURE ORIENTATION (1 hour)
  • PROGRAM SPECIFIC TRAINING (1 - 5 hours)
  • OPTIONAL: COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT COURSE (10 - 15 hours)

In order to obtain a certificate for the Community Development course which is endorsed by the University of Richmond and UNC Charlotte, you will need to complete quizzes & assignments and will be given 4 weeks post program to submit your work.

If you are looking to travel in less than 8 weeks from now, you will still complete the course however this will be done in country and all content will need to be downloaded before arrival.

Health & Hygiene:

The work we contribute to across the globe remains important and new measures allow our participants to continue to join our programs and continue impacting positively on their world and the communities we work with. Changes to our existing protocols have been made by our health and hygiene team to strengthen our health and hygiene protocols and ensure that international standard safeguards are in place to protect our participants, staff and host communities. Please inquire for more information on the protocols.

Journée typique

From Monday to Friday volunteers will be teaching one of our mixed English classes for the local community.  Depending on which classes you teach, you may work with children from local villages, young adults hoping to better their employment through learning English, our local monk students or local businesses hoping to improve the skills of their staff members.

As part of this programme, volunteers will also be responsible for planning and leading workshops, training or classes all geared towards improving gender inequality.

Volunteers will be guaranteed training in women's empowerment as well as at least one workshop which you will lead that focuses on this topic. The rest of your day will be spent providing capacity to our other classes. Volunteers will have a busy day and will undertake a variety of tasks so must remain flexible.

As a volunteer you will be able to introduce the topic of women's empowerment to many of our students who will not have discussed such a concept before. You will receive training based on research by past participants on women and their position in Cambodia.
Volunteers will also be able to work with a whole host of women: from all backgrounds and ages providing a truly diverse experience.

Example of a typical day:
  • 6 am - Get ready for the day: Start the day early just as Siem Reap's Streets start to come to life. If you are an early riser you can get in a quick swim in the pool before breakfast.
  • 7 am - Breakfast and base duties: Enjoy either a Khmer or a Western style breakfast with the team before getting stuck in some base duties.
  • 8 am - Project work with local partner organization: Teach English classes, prepare workshops, work on your tasks.
  • 12 am - Lunch: Lunch is enjoyed as a group. Lunch meals are at a local restaurant during the week which gives you the opportunity o try delicious Khmer dishes. It is common to have reflection sessions where you'll discuss the work you did that day and its impact the local community.
  • 2 pm: Free time or internship projects: Work on your internship or research project or use the free time to further you knowledge on the local culture.
  • 4 pm: Project work with local partner organization: Teach English in the Monastery or delivery raining workshops centered around improving awareness in the community in a range of topics including health, women empowerment, education and more.
  • 6 pm - Dinner: Envoy a meal together as a group.
  • 7 pm - Free time (Relax or social activities): Time to relax or to get involved in social activities. Make use of the common areas to spend time with your new friends, play a game, or do some studying.
  • 9 pm - Bedtime: Due to the early start, most head off to bed to get a restful night's sleep.

The GVI internships were amazing. I had the opportunity to learn and apply some new skills to real world partners that desperately needed help. So as well as building connections, earning a certificate, having fun, learning new skills, you will also make a difference to an organisation. I thoroughly ...
