    Sul programma

At Emerald Acres Animal Rescue Inc., our volunteer program offers a unique opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of injured, orphaned, and displaced Australian wildlife. Located in a peaceful bushland sanctuary, our rescue center provides a safe and nurturing environment where animals can heal and prepare for release back into their natural habitats.

    What You’ll Do

As a volunteer, you’ll be directly involved in the day-to-day care of a variety of native species such as kangaroos, wallaroos, birds, and reptiles. Your responsibilities may include:

    • Preparing and distributing food

    • Cleaning enclosures and maintaining hygiene standards

    • Monitoring animal health and behavior

    • Assisting with enrichment activities to promote natural behaviors

    • Participating in habitat maintenance, bushland clean-up, and general property care

One of our exciting ongoing projects is the creation of a natural duck pond with a self-sustaining filtration system. Volunteers will help design, build, and maintain this eco-friendly habitat, which will serve as a sanctuary for rescued waterfowl and support local biodiversity. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in sustainable habitat restoration.

    What We Expect from Volunteers

We are looking for volunteers who are:

    • At least 18 years old

    • Physically fit and able to perform outdoor and sometimes strenuous tasks

    • Reliable, proactive, and enthusiastic about wildlife care

    • Willing to work as part of a team and follow instructions from experienced carers

    • Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions

No prior experience is necessary, but a love for animals, a willingness to learn, and a respectful attitude toward wildlife are essential.

    Equipment & Supplies

    Volunteers are expected to bring:

    • Sturdy closed-toe shoes or boots

    • Weather-appropriate outdoor clothing (including a hat, sunscreen, and rain gear)

    • Personal toiletries and towels

All tools and materials required for animal care and habitat maintenance will be provided. If you have any dietary restrictions or medical conditions, please inform us in advance.

    What You’ll Gain

You’ll work alongside experienced wildlife carers and gain valuable hands-on skills in animal handling, rehabilitation, and environmental conservation. Our team fosters a supportive, inclusive, and educational environment, making this program ideal for anyone exploring a career in animal care or simply passionate about supporting native wildlife.

Whether you're looking to learn, contribute, or connect with nature, your time at Emerald Acres will be both impactful and unforgettable.

    Giornata tipica

A typical day for a volunteer commences at 8am. We begin with a team briefing to discuss the day’s priorities and any special needs of the animals in care. Volunteers start by preparing nutritious meals and feeding a variety of native wildlife, dependent on who is currently in care, such as kangaroos, wallaroos, and native birds. Following feeding, volunteers clean and maintain enclosures to ensure hygienic, comfortable spaces that support animal recovery.

During the morning shift (8am to 12noon), volunteers assist with monitoring animal health and behavior, recording observations that help our carers tailor rehabilitation plans. Enrichment activities are also an important part of the day, encouraging natural behaviors through interaction and environmental stimulation. This time will also include the cleaning of the common areas on a daily basis, treatment room, outdoor kitchen area, bathroom, inside kitchen, lounge and dining room. Washing of the dirty towels, joey bags etc are done and hung on the line to dry, and folded and put away in the afternoon, weather permitting. Additional tasks may include habitat maintenance, such as bushland clearing/revegetation, garden care, and supporting ongoing projects like building and maintaining our Eco Pond.

We break for lunch at 12noon for an hour and a half.

The afternoon shift (1.30pm to 5.00pm) volunteers will have set tasks each day for this period. List of tasks can include but not limited to: mowing the lawns, enclosure cleaning, garden work, preparing the fundraising can collection and prepare evening meals for the animals and ensure all are secure for the night. We will have a roster set up for all to view and understand.

However, the nature of wildlife rescue means no two days are the same. There may be unexpected moments where an emergency rescue call arrives, and volunteers drop everything to respond promptly, transporting injured or orphaned animals to the sanctuary for immediate care. Flexibility and a readiness to act quickly are essential parts of our volunteer program.

Volunteers leave the day having made a meaningful contribution, gained valuable hands-on experience, and helped ensure the safe rehabilitation and eventual release of Australia’s native wildlife.

Please note that from December to April, summer temperatures in our region can be very hot. Volunteers working during this time should be prepared to work outdoors in the heat. We provide sun hats and sunscreen to help protect against sun exposure.
