    Sobre o programa

Welcome to our family! We are thrilled about your interest in joining our volunteer program. The issue of waste in marine and coastal environments represents a significant global environmental challenge and is increasingly alarming. Our organization has mobilized communities and students to engage in the collection of litter that contaminates our waterways, thereby contributing to cleaner coastlines and healthier oceans, not only at beach locations but also at stormwater drains and lakes that flow into the ocean. We are also inviting international volunteers to participate in our efforts to clean the ocean we serve. Additionally, we conduct educational campaigns in local schools focused on environmental conservation, swimming instruction, and ocean literacy, which will involve our international volunteers. This presents a unique opportunity for international volunteers to discover the city and the communities we support.

We recognize that you may not be able to address everything on your own, but perhaps your friends, family, or colleagues can contribute to making your visit even more meaningful. We assure you that their contributions will be among the most worthwhile expenditures! If you require assistance or materials for promotion, please inform us, and we will supply you with promotional resources, or you can access them through our social media platforms.

Q: How is the volunteer fee used?
A: Fees cover accommodation, meals(breakfast and dinner), long-term project support, and essential resources for the most needy projects. Kindly note that assistance is given on the project depending on the nature and magnitude of the need. Should a volunteer identify a need, we welcome any additional support and ideas in whichever way/project they wish to support.
Q: Why is lunch not included?
A: Volunteers frequently work through lunchtime. You can bring your own lunch or buy budget-friendly meals nearby.
Q: Are T-shirts and tags provided?
A: The organization provides T-shirts and tags for a fee. While T-shirts are optional, we highly recommend having a tag for identification purposes while working on our projects. The fee is $10 for a T-shirt and $6 for a tag. These purchases support both the organization and the projects we serve. As part of UCESCO-AFRICA’s efforts to sustain its operations, volunteers are encouraged to purchase merchandise. These items not only contribute to the organization's upkeep but also serve as a tangible reminder of your support and participation.
How to Purchase Merchandise- can be purchased directly at the UCESCO-AFRICA offices. Payments can be made in cash or through mobile transfer (e.g., MPesa).

Carry Less: Only take essentials – one card and some cash. Be Cautious with Distractions: Pickpockets often work in teams, using distractions like sudden commotions or people bumping into you. Check Often: Regularly touch your bag or pocket to ensure everything’s there. Avoid Easy Targets: Don’t leave bags hanging open or place items in outer compartments that are easy to access.

Recepção no aeroporto em Moi International Airport

Upon your arrival at Mombasa Airport or the SGR train station, a representative from UCESCO-Mombasa will be present to receive you. You will then be transported to your accommodation in our private vehicle, with the journey typically taking around 20 minutes, depending on traffic conditions. After completing your flight booking and confirming your arrival dates, we will provide you with our WhatsApp number to facilitate communication, particularly during the airport pick-up, as there is reliable Wi-Fi available at the airport.

    N/B
Please be advised that luggage delays can occasionally occur. We have observed instances where volunteers have experienced delays of up to three days in receiving their luggage. Therefore, it is advisable to pack a small bag with essential items and a few changes of clothing to ensure your comfort for two to three days. While such delays are not common, they can happen, and this precaution can help you avoid unnecessary expenses, such as purchasing clothing while waiting for your luggage to arrive.

    Alojamento

All volunteer accommodations are equipped with running water; however, it is advised that volunteers refrain from consuming tap water and instead opt for bottled water.

UCESCO-Mombasa provides housing options for volunteers, which include either volunteer houses or homestays. Both types of accommodation feature well-finished, spacious, and aesthetically pleasing apartments that come fully furnished with en-suite rooms and bathrooms. These residences serve as a comfortable home away from home, ensuring a pleasant and memorable stay that encourages return visits.

The living rooms are furnished with armchairs, a flat-screen television, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a fully equipped kitchen for those who wish to prepare their own meals in addition to the provided food. Ample parking is available, and the premises are monitored by security personnel around the clock.

Both homestays and volunteer houses are situated in a tranquil environment, surrounded by friendly locals, and conveniently located near major shopping malls, KFC, gyms, Pizza Inn, coffee shops, supermarkets, and educational institutions. This makes them an excellent choice for volunteers seeking relaxation after their work in the slums. The locations also offer easy access to public transportation to the city, along with numerous bars and restaurants in the vicinity.

Housekeeping services, including bedding changes, are provided weekly on Saturdays.

    Alimentos e Bebidas

    Mombasa's Culinary Heritage

Mombasa is a vibrant city, steeped in history and culture, renowned for its exquisite Swahili cuisine. One of the essential experiences during your visit is to savor the local dishes and snacks.

The culinary landscape of the Kenyan coast has been shaped by Indian and Arabian influences since 800 A.D., promising a delightful journey for your palate. You will encounter a variety of flavors, spices, and enticing aromas.

While the cuisine is known for its spiciness, there are also milder options available for those who prefer less heat in their meals or snacks.

We offer two meals per day, as you will often find yourself engaged at the project site during lunchtime. You may wish to purchase snacks or affordable food options nearby. Occasionally, similar to a school setting, you might share meals with students; however, be mindful that we frequently serve Githeri (a combination of cooked maize and beans), which may be challenging for your digestion if you are unaccustomed to it.

If you have specific dietary needs, such as vegetarian or vegan preferences, please inform us so that we can accommodate your requirements. We will strive to ensure your comfort, but as a volunteer, it is important to remain adaptable to facilitate a smooth experience.

    Preparation for Arrival

Engaging in volunteer work in Kenya through our organization promises to be an exciting and transformative experience. You will have the opportunity to connect with new friendships and confront various challenges, all while immersing yourself in a different culture. To fully benefit from this experience, it is advisable to ensure that you are adequately prepared, both physically and mentally.

    Transportation

"'Matatus''  is our local name, meaning public transport vehicles which serve as the predominant mode of public transport in Kenya. After spending a few days acclimating to your surroundings, you may wish to explore the local area, visit supermarkets, or access ATMs. Additionally, public transport may be necessary to reach your placement project. During your initial days, a member of the Kenyan team will accompany you until you feel comfortable navigating the routes independently. In Mombasa, TUK TUKs and Matatus are widely used and often feature vibrant decorations, including neon lights and sound systems, making them an affordable and enjoyable way to travel. Alternatively, you may choose to utilize the Uber or Bolt applications for taxi services. These platforms are prevalent in Mombasa and are particularly safe for newcomers who may be unfamiliar with local pricing and destinations; thus, using Uber is highly recommended. If you wish to stop somewhere after arriving at the airport before being picked up by our team, consider using the Uber or Bolt app. Relying on traditional taxis without knowledge of bargaining may result in inflated fares. When utilizing public transport, whether as a volunteer or a local, be mindful of the potential for pickpocketing due to crowded conditions. It is advisable to avoid carrying valuables or large amounts of cash. For longer journeys, we suggest coordinating travel arrangements with the Kenyan team, who can provide transportation in a private vehicle or van.

Please be aware that commuting to the project site is essential.

    Why choose us

UCESCO has a 100% safety record in Kenya and we mean to keep it. Our programs in Kenya are safe to experience. Generally, Kenyans are friendly people by nature, especially toward volunteers who are helping their community. We advise that no volunteer should be out after dark and that volunteers should stay indoors after 9 pm. Exceptions are made when volunteers are with UCESCO local volunteers or project staff. This is merely a precaution, but one that we expect all volunteers to keep. People may stop to say hello and it is polite to respond; however, they will understand if you are busy and cannot chat for long. Never accept an invitation to visit a stranger. We also recommend that you arrange medical, dental, and eye check-ups before you depart, to identify any issues that might affect your time in Kenya.
