The Twiga Foundation is an
NGO (non-profit non-governmental organization) committed to young women and
young children from difficult social and economic backgrounds. Founded by
Daniphord Mwajah, the organization opened a new community center in 2016 to be
as close as possible to its target audience and provide help where it most
needed. The Kituo cha Huduma Mahususi (KHM) named Day Care Center is located in
Arusha's densely populated Mianzini district.
Collaboration at KHM is perfect for creative and
imaginative volunteers who not only want to be active in the field of
childcare, but also want to play an active role in the development of the
center through fundraising, public relations and administrative assistance.
Volunteers
demand a lot of creativity and initiative. Work experience can be beneficial
here, but no specific knowledge is required and volunteers of all ages and
educational background are welcome. It is important to have the right attitude
and an independent mindset and ability to recognize problems as a challenge and
not as an obstacle.
The
KHM has great development potential and volunteers can make a not inconsiderable
contribution to this!
A special project called TAKE A MALAIKA was
launched in 2018 to help young women and mothers with their professional future
and financial independence. They sew angels (Malaikas), small purses and table
decoration. These are then sold in Arusha, as well as all over the world
through the help of volunteers. Here, the help and support of volunteers, for
example, by the further development of the project, by advertising and
assistance in selling the angel needed. More information about the project can

Tagesablauf
The Twiga Foundation is located in the district
of Mianzini, Arusha and is located near the Nairobi-Moshi Highway. To get
there, you have to take the Dala Dala (local minibus) from our STEP Hostel
about 20 minutes drive to Mianzini. From there you walk
for about 5-10 minutes through the lively streets of the district until you
reach the center.
Working hours and everyday working life are
largely flexible, which is especially beneficial for volunteers who would like
to work independently and prefer a free time schedule.
Possible fields of work at Twiga Vision include:
Care and teaching of preschool children, who are
cared for by the KHM (8-13 o'clock) like child-friendly teaching and project
work, First numbers and letters, basic English, songs and games as well as
implementation of methods of playful learning.
Tutoring of young people who come to the center
after school in the afternoon to continue learning (until about 16.30).
Fundraiser to renovate and expand the center for
example design of the classrooms with pedagogically meaningful material.
Public Relations: updating homepage profiles for
and Facebook page to keep sponsors up to date and gain future backers. This
includes the creation and updating of profiles for children who are looking for
international sponsors (there is a small office available for work, but it is
advantageous to bring your own laptop and USB stick for public relations).
Conceptual and future planning for individual
young mothers who would like to stand on their own two feet in the long term
(this includes discussions about personal prospects and ideas, specific
planning, for example school or college or job search, help with budget
planning, etc.).
So
you see, in this project there is always something to do, the fields of duties
are incredibly diverse and every day is different!
Freizeitaktivitäten
The project is based in
Arusha, Tanzania. There are several free time activities volunteers can engage
in. We organize Safaris, mountain climbs and shorter tours like hiking, horse
riding, visit to a nearby massai village, trip to the hotsprings and
waterfalls, coffee tours, etc. to the nearer surroundings at affordable rates.
We always make sure, that all guides and staffs are being paid fair wages. At
the same time there are lots of things you can do during your free time or at
the weekends in Arusha itself. There are different markets like second hand
market, spice markets or massai market, as well as typical african restaurants
and bars. Furthermore, the area you will live is very beautiful and you can
either go to a lake and do canoeing or you can go to a lodge with a pool near
to the hostel to relax for little money. Our other
volunteers from the hostel will be happy to show you everything and if you join
them at your free weekends!

Leistungen
The STEP Africa Program Fees are calculated as follows:
− A one time application fee which includes 2 way airport transfers, pre-departure support, preparation handbooks, orientation day and project support
− Program fees to stay at the STEP Africa House (including breakfast and dinner from monday to friday), on-the-ground support and supervision by the STEP Africa Team (our office is in Tanzania!) and 24h emergency contact.
Important Note: To keep it transparent we do not add any donation to our program fees (which are entirely used for your preparation, supervision and accommodation) but encourage you to raise some funds among your family and friends prior to your arrival or once you have arrived in Tanzania. Any small or big amount is highly appreciated and you are entirely free to decide on how you want to utilize your donation within the project. By doing so you will see how much of a difference donations can make and its a great feeling to see this first hand. We understand volunteering as a holistic approach of helping each other and learning from one another and while you will do amazing daily work as a volunteer we want you to also understand that no project can entirely survive if it wasn't for financial support as well
Airport Pick-up is included in the costs. Volunteers can
be picked up at any day and night time. Possible Arrival Airports are
Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha Airport.
The STEP Africa
Volunteer House is located 20 minutes out of Arusha Town and all projects are
easily accessible by public transport from here. We have 6 dorm rooms, 4
bathrooms (western toilets and almost always warm showers), a big communal
rooms and an outside area for sitting together and enjoying the leisure time with fellow
volunteers. You will share your room with one to five person and all beds are equipped with a
mosquito net. Our hostel dogs Robby and Congo are also part of the
family and are responsible for your safety. We are
sure that you will find new friends very fast and there will be always be
someone to talk to and share the experiences with.
Gasthaus
Food (breakfast and
dinner) is provided from Monday to Friday at the STEP Africa House. The
breakfast includes tea, white bread, butter, jam, peanutbutter and an african special
of the day like Mandazi or cooked banana. Our house mother cookes delicious
typical tanzania dinner for you e.g. rice with beans or chapati. During the
weekends volunteers can use the kitchen for cooking or eat in one of the
several restaurants in and around Arusha. Safe filtered drinking water as well
as the fridges in the kitchen are available
for all volunteers. Even as a vegetarian, you will not have problems either at
the hostel, nor outside at local restaurants in Arusha.
Gute Verbindung vor Ort
Visa, Flüge, Reiseversicherung und Impfungen sind NICHT in den Programmgebühren enthalten.
Der nächstgelegene Flughafen ist Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) in Kilimanjaro. Wir helfen dir günstige Flüge nach Tansania zu finden.
Ins Ausland zu gehen ist ein Abenteuer, auf das man sich stets gut vorbereiten sollte. Plötzliche Krankheit oder Verletzung, Stornierung oder Diebstahl - eine Reiseversicherung für Tansania bietet die nötige Sicherheit.
Bevor du deine Freiwilligenarbeit in Tansania antrittst, solltest du dich noch einmal von deinem Arzt beraten lassen und deine erforderlichen Impfungen für Tansania überprüfen.

We do not have specific arrival dates. You can join our program throughout the year and on any day of the week / month. Our driver can pick you from Kilimanjaro Airport at any day or night time. The airport shuttle is already included in our program fees, so we do not charge extra costs. The day following your arrival you will receive a detailed orientation from us. Our supervisor will show you Arusha town, you will get a local SIM card, go together to an ATM and you will get the chance to go buy anything necessary at the supermarket. The weekday following your orientation day is usually your first day at the project. On your first day you will be joined by one of our lovely team members.
