About the Program

The two recognized human rights organizations where we place volunteers/interns are The Human Rights Advocacy Center (HRAC) and Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI).

The situation of human rights in Africa and for that matter Ghana is generally reported to be poor, and it is seen as an area of grave concern according to the UN, and non-governmental observers. While many countries have laws and regulations recognizing basic human rights for all citizens, these are not always recognized. Extensive human rights abuses still occur in several parts of Africa, often under the oversight of the state.

The Human Rights Advocacy Center (HRAC) organization's in Ghana is dedicated to the promotion and protection of human rights. Their areas of activities include: Rule of Law, Access to Justice, Respect of the Constitution, Police Accountability, Children's Rights, Women's Rights and Right to Information. Through cutting-edge research, education, and advocacy, the organization saves lives, fights injustice, restores peace, and builds the human rights movement around the world. The organization deals with issues of reproductive rights (harmful traditional practices such as female genital circumcision), issues of rape, child trafficking, assault, unlawful detention and eviction, etc.

Location
Ghana is a peaceful and welcoming country; Ghana satisfies one's appetite for both modern and traditional life. Its wide valleys, low-lying coastal plains, and thick rainforests resound with the beat of traditional rituals, while her cities glow and vibrate with all the bustle of the modern world. The Ghanaians are the friendliest people in West Africa: warm, proud yet humble with a contagious and calming sense of funniness.

Ghana is hot. It is always hot. What’s more, it's always humid. Humidity usually lingers between 95 and 100 percent. The rainy season lasts from mid-June to mid-November - sometimes. The rain provides a little respite from the intense heat, but temperatures will still be in the mid-80s Fahrenheit. The south of the country experiences the heaviest rainfall during September.

Tagesablauf

You’ll start each day with breakfast with your host family. Get dressed in semi-formal, conservative clothing before heading off in a tro-tro or shared taxi. On your first day, your supervisor will accompany you to ensure you know your way around.

Your day will start at 8am and you’ll finish up at 4pm, Monday to Friday. However, your hours may be longer if you’re doing outreach work. You’ll get an hour each day for lunch.

On an average day, you’ll arrive at the office and meet up with your supervisors before heading to a community outreach. At the outreach, you’ll interview community members, collect data, and raise awareness through educational talks. After returning to the office around midday, you’ll review the information you collected. Once you have analyzed the information, you and the human rights staff will be better able to assist and advise community members.

In the afternoons, you can use you time to conduct independent research for current initiatives. You can also plan presentations for educational campaigns, attend meetings, or assist with project planning for future outreaches.

Once you are done for the day, you can spend time getting to know your host family. Over the weekends, you can explore the beautiful countryside and learn about the slave trade at one of the many national museums. You’ll also have the chance to visit Cape Coast and walk through the old fishing town or relax on the beach.

Freizeitaktivitäten

During weekends Volunteers/Interns have the opportunity to visit all that Ghana has to offer. Weekend trips available include visits to Mole National Park in the Northern Region of Ghana. This National Park offers a great Safari-like experience and is one of the biggest Elephant Sanctuaries in Africa with the chance to spot Lions, Leopards & Antelopes in their natural habitat.
Volunteers can also take a trip to Cape Coast in the Central Region of Ghana to relax in the beautiful beaches and see the famous Cape Coast castle, the Kakum Canopy walkway and Elmina castle, where slave trade begun.

NOTE: We do not provide tours, however you can add a tour before or after your volunteer program for an additional cost. We can perform quality tours and can offer discounts to volunteers.
