The volunteer project in Greece takes place in 2 areas of the island, Kefalonia and Argostoli. Although they are different areas and accommodations, in both you will be with more volunteers.
Regularly, different activities are carried out apart from the main ones according to the area, some of these are:
ARGOSTOLI
- Observation of sea turtle mating
- Observation of identification techniques
- Participation in drone surveys of the harbour and feeding grounds (May only).
- Beach profile studies
- Beach cleaning
- Plastic pollution assessment
- Sea turtle tagging (May to end of June)
- Rescues of injured sea turtles
- Recording of behavioural observations
- Sea turtle monitoring in the harbour
- Early morning beach nesting census on the beach
- Protection of nests and relocation if needed
LIXOURI
- Rescue of injured sea turtles
- Monitoring of sea turtles in port
- Monitored nests for hatching events (both early in the morning and overnight)
- Beach profile studies
- Beach cleaning
- Plastic pollution assessment
A typical day in the turtle project in Greece starts around 8 a.m. with breakfast, after which the volunteers are told the tasks assigned to them for the day, which can be beach cleaning, release, research topics.
At lunchtime there is a break and in the evening the activities are resumed.
