    Sobre el programa

The project takes place in San Ramón, Alajuela, a setting that combines the serenity of the Costa Rican landscape with a solid commitment to animal health and welfare. The veterinary clinic is a prominent space dedicated to the comprehensive care of pets and farm animals. Here, volunteers have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a professional and enriching environment, where a passion for animals translates into a tangible impact.

    Your Role and Responsibilities

As a program participant, you will be a fundamental part of the team, providing direct support in diagnoses and treatments alongside expert veterinarians. Each day represents an opportunity to learn by handling real situations, from the attentive care of hospitalized patients to advising owners on optimal animal care practices. You will develop valuable practical skills, enhance your ability to respond in medical situations, and build a solid foundation of veterinary knowledge.

    Collaboration and Mentorship

With whom will you be working? You will not be observing from the sidelines; you will work shoulder-to-shoulder with a dedicated team of local professionals, including licensed veterinarians, experienced veterinary technicians, and clinic support staff. This mentorship dynamic allows for a rich exchange of knowledge, giving you insight into how veterinary medicine is practiced in a Latin American context. You will also interact with local pet owners, playing a key role in educational outreach and fostering better human-animal bonds within the community.

    Expectations and Requirements

What we expect from you: We are looking for volunteers who are proactive, observant, and truly passionate about animal welfare. Veterinary work can be demanding and requires emotional resilience, patience, and a willingness to help with all aspects of clinic maintenance—from high-level medical observation to cleaning kennels. A respectful attitude towards local staff and protocols is essential. While fluency is not required, a basic understanding of Spanish is highly beneficial for daily interactions.

Equipment and Gear: To ensure safety and professionalism in the clinical environment, volunteers are required to bring:

    - Closed-toe shoes: Comfortable, non-slip, closed shoes are mandatory to protect your feet from medical equipment and fluids.

    - Stethoscope: If you are a veterinary student or professional, bringing your own stethoscope is recommended, though not strictly mandatory.

    Global Impact and Growth

Furthermore, the program has an approach aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDGs 15, 12, and 3, promoting the well-being of terrestrial ecosystems, responsible production and consumption, and human-animal health. This not only strengthens your technical skills but also allows you to contribute to a positive environmental and social impact, promoting the life and welfare of animals, a vital resource for local communities.

During your time in Costa Rica, you will work in a diverse and collaborative environment, interacting with professionals who share your passion for animal care. By taking on this challenge, you will not only grow professionally, but you will also become part of a global network of caretakers who make a difference every day, in a country known for its rich biodiversity and environmental commitment. Thus, the experience becomes a transformative journey that connects your love for animals with a broader purpose, within a framework of continuous learning and personal development.
