    À propos du programme

Ghana’s tropical coastline is a place of extraordinary natural beauty and biodiversity, home to lush vegetation, vibrant marine life, and rare wildlife species. Yet this fragile environment is increasingly under threat from pollution, coastal erosion, and poor waste management. A significant portion of the waste generated in Accra, the country’s capital, finds its way into the ocean and washes up on beaches across the country—impacting both ecosystems and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

For many of these communities, the environmental damage is an everyday reality, even if the long-term consequences aren't fully understood. In seaside villages, coastal erosion is becoming a critical issue. Homes that once stood safely inland are now at risk of being swallowed by the sea. In some cases, huts have already been washed away, and relocating to safer ground is often financially out of reach for many families.

Wildlife, too, is suffering. Sea turtles, once common along Ghana’s beaches during nesting season from September to January, have become increasingly rare. Pollution and the destruction of nesting grounds have led to a dramatic decline in their numbers. Fish populations are also shrinking, largely due to overfishing by industrial fleets—despite the fact that fishing remains the primary source of income for around 10% of the population.

As a volunteer in this coastal conservation project, you’ll be part of a dedicated effort to reduce plastic pollution and protect Ghana's coastline. Your placement will be in Axim, a small town on Ghana’s western coast, where you’ll work alongside a resort that has run environmental education programs on this stretch of coast for over 25 years.

The resort, set across 45 hectares of beautiful coastline, plays an essential role in the local community. It creates secure jobs, trains disadvantaged individuals, and runs ongoing outreach programs focused on environmental awareness—all while ensuring the responsible use of natural resources. Profits from the resort are reinvested into new ecological and social initiatives that benefit the region.

As a volunteer, you’ll help support educational activities, take part in conservation efforts, and contribute directly to beach cleanups, erosion management and wildlife monitoring. From beach cleanups and sea turtle protection to community education and awareness campaigns, your work will directly support long-term environmental change.

If you’re passionate about marine conservation, enjoy working outdoors, and want to make a real difference, this project offers a unique opportunity to help protect Ghana's coastline—while experiencing life in one of West Africa’s most breathtaking coastal areas.

Your schedule may vary depending on tides, seasons, and the lunar cycle, as these natural rhythms influence many of the activities. Public holidays are generally similar to those in Europe.

Lunch is served at the beach resort from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., and it’s common for staff and volunteers to eat together.

Ghana se’w Akwaaba! – Welcome to Ghana!

This culturally and geographically diverse country will immediately draw you in. The warmth and openness of the Ghanaian people make it easy for you to feel at home and settle in quickly!

In Axim, you'll carry out your volunteer work or international internship in a protected bay along one of the most beautiful beaches on Ghana’s western coast. The nearby town of Axim has a population of about 13,000 and is situated at the mouth of a mangrove river that flows into the Gulf of Guinea.

Life in Axim still follows many traditional rhythms. The town is home to a large fishing community, and locals sell their fresh catch daily at the markets. It’s also the perfect place to explore Ghanaian cuisine—try dishes like fufu, a true local favorite!

After your workday or on your days off, there’s plenty of time to relax and explore your surroundings. Right near the project site lies one of the country’s most stunning beaches. Take time to enjoy this tropical paradise—whether you’re lounging between palm trees and white sand, learning to surf, or gathering around a campfire with fellow volunteers under the starry sky.

If you're in the mood for a change of scenery, a short trip into Axim offers a mix of culture and history. Visit Fort San Antonio, a colonial-era slave fort that tells the story of Ghana’s complex past, then stroll through a local market and sample fresh seafood dishes or traditional meals like fufu. Once a year, Axim also hosts the vibrant Kundum Festival—an unforgettable experience full of drumming, dancing, and food, where you can fully immerse yourself in Ghanaian culture.

Beyond the beach and town, there’s even more to discover. Take a canoe tour along the nearby river and, with a bit of patience and luck, you may spot crocodiles or monkeys in their natural habitat.

And if you’re eager to see more of the country, Ghana has many other highlights to offer. One standout is Kakum National Park, where you can walk along a one-of-a-kind canopy walkway—suspended up to 45 meters above ground—and experience the rainforest from high above, surrounded by the towering treetops.

    Informations sur l'arrivée

Before you even depart, our team in Munich will take you through every step of the process, from answering your questions about the programme, through to advising you where to go for your visa. We are here to help you and to ensure that you feel totally comfortable (and prepared!) before departing.

Ahead of starting, the project accepts new arrivals every Wednesday and Sunday, so flights and transfers can be planned around these days.

For your project work in Axim, you’ll first land in Accra, the capital of Ghana. If you arrive very late, it makes sense to spend your first night in Accra, as you can then relax and continue your journey on to Axim the following day. We do offer an optional extra where you can get picked up in Accra, transfer to our chosen guesthouse for a night and then transferred the next day to your onwards travel. For your onward journey to Axim, you have two options: Book (with our help!) a domestic flight to Takoradi (around £50 to £70) or a bus (£10). The bus ride takes about 4.5 hours and the bus station can easily be reached by taxi.

Your orientation will take place in the first few days, after your arrival at our Axim site. This consists of a welcome to everyday life in your project, a briefing in the house, code of conduct rules and a tour of the area where the project will take place. You'll also learn about some of the work that goes on within the project. Our on-site team will show you to your room in a bungalow in the "Volunteer & Staff Village" and give you time to set up. The rest of the day you have time to look around the grounds, meet your new colleagues and to enjoy the six-kilometer-long sandy beach!
