    Join the Mission to Protect Endangered Sea Turtles in Costa Rica

    The Planet Conservation Sea Turtle Conservation Project is dedicated to safeguarding four iconic sea turtle species— Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), Green (Chelonia mydas), and Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea)—all of which are classified as endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.

    Our mission is to reduce the vulnerability of these remarkable marine reptiles by protecting vital nesting populations, collecting crucial scientific data, and promoting sustainable conservation practices. Our work spans both the South Caribbean coast—particularly the beaches of Cahuita and Playa Gandoca —from March to October, and the Pacific coast from June to December.

    We're looking on passionate volunteers to join our efforts. From participating in night and morning patrols to supporting the collection of the eggs as well as hatchling releases and data collection, your involvement directly contributes to the survival of these ancient ocean travelers as otherwise in some places 99% of the nests will be stolen by poachers.

    Our volunteers always walk with a local guide and follow the patrol protocol on walking in line, without light and mostly in silent to be aware of any events. We also need to ensure that the volunteer is physically fit to walk 12km per patrol and can adjust to the tropical climate as well as changing working times. You live in the jungle and can often spot monkeys, sloths, toucans and other tropical birds. Our local team is also there for the volunteers to organize additional activities such as Spanish language or surf courses, excursions or tours.

    Day 1: Arrival in Cahuita 10:00 am  accommodation and introduction, city walk; 6 p.m. dinner.

    Day 2: 8a.m. Breakfast; 9-12 pm introduction at the hatchery, help to organize and paint information center. Afternoon hike to the Cahuita National Park. dinner 6pm included

    Day 3: 8a.m. Breakfast; 9-12pm beach clean up;  Afternoon free. 6:00p.m. dinner. 

    Day 4: 4:00a.m Morning patrol. Afterwards breakfast 9am; day available for tour to Puerto Viejo (bus fee$4) 6:00p.m. dinner; evening off.


    Day 5: 7:30 Breakfast. Environmental education activity at the local school or elaboration of environmental signs for the project. afternoon off; 6:00 pm dinner; night patrol beach 10pm-3am. 

    Day 6:  late breakfast; day to relax  6:00p.m. dinner; night patrol beach 9:30pm-3am.

    In their free time our volunteers can support activities onsite and help us in the garden, hike to the nearby national parks or plan extra activities such as snorkeling, horse back riding, surfing, kayaking,  bird watching, be creative, read and play card games or chess.

    Pour participer à ce programme, tu dois avoir au moins 20 ans au moment du début.

    Compétences linguistiques

    Tu dois parler Anglais (niveau moyen) et Espagnol (niveau moyen)

    Marine Biology, Tropical Studies, Biology, Ecology à niveau University

    Accommodation,food w/2 meals per day, public transportation to the camp from  san jose (4+ weeks), project coordination, city tour, 24h emergency support.

    We provide airport pickup for all participants of 4 weeks+. This also includes accommodation of your first night in San Jose, dinner, breakfast and public transportation to destination. If you would like to book this service separately please let us know in your application.

    Logement

    Shared accommodation at the Project site. Upgrade to private cabin upon availability. Our cabins room were newly built in 2024 and count with two bunk beds or one double one bunk per room with screened windows, fan. Bathroom with shower, kitchenette and fridge in each room, common area. 

    Aliments & Boissons

    2 meals per day are included but the participant can use the main kitchen to prepare lunch. Large grocery store near by. Typical Costa Rican food, Rice, Beans, vegetables, salad, grains, bread, eggs. Mostly vegetarian meals, twice a week chicken or fish.
    We can cater vegan or lactose intolerant diets at no extra costs. Gluten Free meals have a surcharge of $15 per week.

    Informations sur l'arrivée

    From March to September project in Cahuita, Caribbean Coast. from September to December we work in Carate, Osa Peninsula.
    Upon arrival in the country we can help to organize your pickup and transfer to the destination 

    (included for participants 4weeks+). Welcome to the camp where the team awaits you. We offer 5 cabins with 4 beds and bathroom each. Furthermore we have a communal kitchen and hammock area. Upon arrival you will receive an introduction on program details and rules as well as a city tour. Please prepare all needed items before heading to Costa Rica as shops close by have limited selection. You should bring closed toed shoes (crocs ideal) as we walk at night without light and you might hit your toes at a branch or rock. Furthermore we require dark long sleeves shirts and pants for the patrols and rechargeable flashlights with red light function. Please bring a rainjacket, a waterproof backpack and water bottle.
