À propos du programme

Project

Parrot Rescue Center of Costa Rica (PRC), is an organization whose primary focus is to: rescue, rehabilitate, and, whenever possible, release parrots back into nature.  Most of the parrots at the center were brought over by the government after they were confiscated from houses where they were kept as illegal pets.  For those that are unable to be released, we provide a permanent, safe environment that fulfills their physical, mental and social needs.  PRC is a registered U.S. and Costa Rica non-profit.  Please let us know if you need the information for the 501(c)3 for your tax deduction.

Tree Conservation

We have already planted hundreds of trees and will be planting several thousand more over the next few years on the property of the Parrot Rescue Center.

Volunteers

As a volunteer you will come in close contact with over 70 parrots of different species!  While the number of parrots at the rescue is increasing, volunteer numbers are not keeping up.  Your contribution is enormous as the rescue needs your help feeding the birds, raking and washing aviaries, cutting lots of veggies, cooking, making toys, planting trees, trail maintenance and more!  Some tasks may not be easy and can be physically demanding. But we do assign tasks that are comfortable and enjoyable for each volunteer. If you enjoy working with animals and are not afraid to get your hands dirty in the outdoors, then be part of an exciting experience. Enjoy the satisfaction that comes with helping to care for wildlife in a beautiful, natural environment!  As a volunteer you will be working alongside experienced staff to train you in the day to day routine of the rescue.  You will be required to undergo an initial orientation after your arrival.  You will be expected to be reliable, responsible, honest, flexible and open minded.  Volunteers play a key role in wildlife rescue and care. Not only will you be learning new skills and helping animals in need, you will make new friends from around the world and will create an enriching experience for yourself.  Volunteer contributions go towards animal care & husbandry, the day to day running of the shelter and the upgrading of the facilities.  At this time, we accept up to 4 volunteers at a time.

Location

The rescue center is located in Sabalito, Coto Brus, Puntarenas on a 7 hectare property.  The volunteer house is within walking distance to the rescue center (300m away).  Sabalito and the surrounding areas are very safe.  It is mainly a farming community and the people are extremely friendly and always happy to chat with visitors.

Weather

The weather in our area is ideal. Year-round temperatures are 24-30C (75-85F) degrees during the day and around 19c (66f) at night.  The sun is shining almost everyday, yes, year-round.  In the rainy season, (June through November), we will still have sunny morning and may get rain for a few hours in the afternoons. In the dry season we “might” receive a light afternoon rain. Most of the time - just sunny!  So be prepared for these temperatures and possible rain.

Costs

PRC is a non-profit that relies on donations and the donations from volunteers to support the project. All of these donations goes back to the project itself. We receive no government assistance so for this reason we need to charge volunteers.

Sur le projet

We rescue, rehabilitate and release parrots in Costa Rica. We provide a safe home to 70+ birds to those who are unable to be released.

Rencontrez votre hôte

The Parrot Rescue Center of Costa Rica is a 501(c)3, non profit organization that collaborates with the local Costa Rican wildlife government branch (SINAC).  The primary focus is to rescue, rehabilitate, and, whenever possible, release parrots that have been kept in captivity illegally. It is a pivotal goal of the PRC Mission to release as many birds as possible so that they can fly free. For those that are unable to be released, we provide a permanent, safe environment that fulfills their physical, mental and social needs.  Most of the parrots at the facility were either abandoned or confiscated, and then donated to us. A lot were kept in extremely small cages, with metal rod perches, and subsisted on a diet of pure sunflower seeds. Some have developed behavioral disorders, while others have become too domesticated.  Several of the residents have sustained permanent physical disabilities due to collisions with vehicles, buildings or electric cables.

Locals poach baby chicks and sell them illegally as pets to oftentimes unaware owners. The PRC has gone door-to-door to educate the community on proper parrot care. We seek to expand our efforts to elementary and middle school children. By educating children on the ecological imperative of leaving parrots in the wild, they learn about the interconnectedness of the environment in context of the incredible biodiversity of Costa Rica. With increased awareness, the demand for illegal parrots should decrease with future generations of pet owners.

Deforestation is a consequence of agricultural expansion in a developing world country such as Costa Rica. In addition, during the poaching process, trees are felled to gain access to parrot nests. Widespread loss of their natural habitat has caused two parrot species to become endangered. Over the past 8 years, the PRC initiated reforestation efforts planting over 500 fruit and seed trees.  PRC wants to expand their reforestation efforts, planting thousands of fruit and seed trees for wild parrots to feed on.
