À propos du programme

Morro Ayuta beach is considered one of two most important beaches worldwide for the survival of the olive ridley sea turtle (Lepydochelis olivacea), where the maximum number of nesting was registered in the world: more than 2 million turtles. The arribada phenomenon is possible to experience June to March. There are also nesting of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea), the largest turtle on the planet, and black or green turtles (Chelonia mydas). We have work to do all the year long, since the last arribada is usually in March, the hatchlings will hatch in the beginning of May. Also, even if there are no arribadas, turtles nest everyday.

In this community, after the efforts of Flor del Pacífico to promote this important beach as an ecotouristic destination, many people in the community became empowered to be a certified guide and to work in groups for the conservation of the Sanctuary instead of exploiting sea turtle nests to sell  them in the illegal market.
The volunteering is focused on:
  •  Patrolling at night in the beach with local guides
  •  Developing environmental actions with our young environmental brigades
  •  English lessons to teenagers and local guides
  •  Supporting local groups in promoting their work creating audiovisual material, posting it through social networks and internet, and connecting their services with potential partners
  • Sharing time with the local team, Flor del Pacífico, learning to do typical food and supporting in the maintenance of the place.
  • Create ideas to improve the conservation activities, ecotourism services, find ways to make Río Seco more sustainable through ecotourism initiatives.

Journée typique

It's eleven PM, the sky is full of stars and you are waiting for a turtle to lay their eggs with your local guide, who is showing you the true beauty of the beach during the night. You are able to see the whole nesting process, thinking how privileged you are. Sometimes, you will want to protect all the turtles that are nesting from poachers, that many times will be impossible because they are so many, but you have to think that at least thanks to you, many would be protected.

After two or three hours of patrolling, you come back home walking on the beach, tired but satisfied for your hard work (although there are nights that turtles don't like to nest and maybe you just enjoyed the walk). After a quick shower, you just relax and sleep.
The next morning, the sun will wake you up, you will have your morning to enjoy a coffee, to help your family to clean the kitchen and to check some ideas to implement in your english or environmental lessons with teenagers or local guides.

During the evening, you will have a english lesson of 1 hour and a half, you will have to be creative for them to understand you, because they are beginners in the english. But don't worry, they say that the best way to learn a language is without any translation, using pictures or mimics.

That night you are able to rest, since the next morning, there are possibilities to have to help baby sea turtles that are nesting in their natural habitat to reach the sea, protecting them from dogs and vultures.

Activités de loisirs

There are many activities and places to visit during free days. We will have two following days per week. So check some nice places before your arrival.

During your free time during working days you will be living in a very natural area, you will be living right in front of the beach, where you cannot swim freely, as it is a very strong open sea. You will have a lot of ways to hike, there is a beach nearby (40 minutes walking) where you can surf and swim.

And for the free days, close to Morro Ayuta Project:

  • Huatulco. It’s a city full of wonderfull things: you can snorkel where there are coral reefs, beautiful beaches, there are some beautiful waterfalls to go in a tour, a national park with virgin beaches and walking trails, … It is a place full of possibilities, with many professional tour agencies
  • Dunes of Chipehua: Don't have to go to the desert anymore. Next to the beach, there are beautiful dunes in Oaxaca, close to Río Seco. It is a beach where you can swim and walk in this beautiful place
  • San Pedro Huamelula. A beautiful and traditional community where you feel that can go back in the time! You can visit the village, eat typical food in the small market and visit a craft jamaican wine and corn beer.

With your economical support, you are part of making possible that the community can live from protecting the turtle, instead of exploiting it.
You will live in a room in front of the beach, next to a restaurant made by regional materials. You will work with them in their conservation and ecotourism project for sea turtles reminding them the importance of their conservation work in one of the two most important beaches worldwide!
On the other hand, you will be part of the workshops with our environmental brigades every week, making possible that children empower themselves to change their community and to protect nature.

You will have a coordinator that will pick you up from the airport and who will guide you in your activities, who will help you to have a better understanding of your activities during the week. The team don't speak very good english, as well as the rest of the community, so get ready to practice your spanish!

So, with your contribution you will be provided of:
  • Airport pick-up
  • Accommodation in a room in front of the beach.
  • Cooks can cook for you! Adapted for vegans or vegetarians. This option will raise the price 100€ per week.
  • Two coordinators one in the field, and other close by to whom you can count with translations and some activities if needed.

After paying the reservation through Volunteer World, the best way to make your economical contribution is Mexican pesos in your arrival date. If you would like to do the payment by bank transfer in euros, is also possible.

Transfert de l'aéroport Huatulco Airport

We can pick you up in Huatulco airport or bus station :) from 9.00 am to 15.00

Logement

You will live in front of the beach, 4km far from the village!

You will have access to a kitchen, that is a beautiful restaurant and common bathroom next to the rooms. The rooms are 2 double beds, so maybe you have to share it with another volunteer in case that is needed.

Aliments & Boissons

The team will provide you, if you decide to ask for meals:
  • Breakfast: a coffee or tea with a bread or fruit.
  • Lunch and dinner: These meals will be the same as they eat, usually they are typical oaxacan food (entomatadas, quesadillas, soups, pozole, fish, black beans, rice, eggs,...)
If you are vegetarian or vegan, you will have the possibility to cook your own food, but you will have to buy the things that you would like to prepare.

Sur le projet

Conservation of millions of sea turtles by patrolling the beach, relocating nests and monitoring sea turtle females on the beach.

Rencontrez votre hôte

Numerous local groups are developing their own projects to preserve important natural areas or endangered species in Mexico. Many of them are well focused or have an enormous potential to develop ecotourism (or sustainable tourism), raising money from visitors to continue their work.

For this reason, Tartarukus was born to strengthen these conservation groups by offering them environmental technical consulting and promotion or their work, using digital media, social networks and developing a web platform to demonstrate the environmental work of the local groups and the services that they offer to visitors.

Our main objectives are:

  • to maintain and improve conservation activities in the groups such as vigilance and patrolling of natural areas, monitoring species, protecting nests or reproductive areas of specific species, developing an environmental education program in the communities, etc.
  • to enhance intercultural exchange in order to give a new perspective to solve environmental and social problems,
  • to raise awareness worldwide of the environmental situation in the natural areas in the South of Mexico,
  • to show the importance of the work of the local people for its conservation,
  • to demonstrate how people can fund these conservation projects through ecotourism.

Our allied local groups are:

  1. Centro Ecoturístico Escobilla. This group of 13 people from the Escobilla community in Oaxaca have been working for the conservation of sea turtles by relocating nests and monitoring the females on the beach. They have been protecting the Sanctuary Playa Escobilla for 17 years in which more than 2 million sea turtles are nesting every year, doing everything without almost no income, showing their incomparable perseverance and will for the conservation.
  2. Servicios Ecoturísticos La Ventanilla. This group is certificated as Paraíso Indígena, and they dedicated their efforts in the conservation of the american crocodyle, whitetail deer, three species of sea turtle (green, leatherback and olive Ridley sea turtle) and the mangroves of the lagoon.
  3.  El Gavilán ADVC. El Gavilán is a Donated Area to the Conservation (ADVC) in Cozoaltepec community, Oaxaca, composed of the land of more than 30 people of the community. Since 2014, they are monitoring, patrolling and reporting incidents in the jungle of El Gavilán in order to avoid poaching and deforestation.

Here, you have the possibility to join us into a wild experience, protecting thousands of sea turtles nesting at the same time, monitoring hundreds of crocodiles, in a very safety way, and walking in a jungle full of wildlife (cougars, ocelots, toucans, ...) by our hands and the hands of indigenous conservation groups.

We are looking for people, groups or organizations who want to take actions which regenerate the environment, Always being flexible, open minded and willing to live together in a very different people and environment. It is required to have a physical condition enough to patrol the beach
