🌍 About the Program
The Big Five Safari Reserve is a conservation project that began in 1999 through the collaboration of local landowners and conservationists. Located on restored farmland, the reserve now includes six eco-tourism lodges and aims to reintroduce indigenous wildlife, including the Big Five (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and leopard), back into their natural habitat.

The volunteer program supports the reserve's ongoing environmental and wildlife management efforts. Participants contribute to practical conservation tasks while gaining firsthand experience in reserve operations and African wildlife ecology.

🧭 Guidance and Supervision
Volunteers are guided by a qualified game ranger who coordinates daily tasks and provides background knowledge about the environment, wildlife, and conservation strategies. Transport between the volunteer house and the reserve is provided.

📋 Typical Tasks
Volunteer duties vary depending on the needs of the reserve but are generally hands-on and outdoors. These may include:

🕒 Short-term Projects:

• Assisting with game capturing, monitoring, and population counts

• Learning about and documenting medicinal plants and vegetation zones

• Participating in guided bush walks and tracking exercises

• Monitoring nocturnal predators with spotlighting and observation

📆 Long-term Projects:

• Tracking animals using telemetry equipment

• Monitoring lion health, movement, and breeding

• Observing giraffe behavior and territory mapping

• Supporting local sustainability and education efforts

• Participating in the Birds in Reserves Project

🛠️ General Reserve Duties:

• Fence inspections and basic repairs

• Road maintenance and erosion control

• Removing alien plant species

• Clearing bush encroachment

• Maintaining enclosures (bomas) and infrastructure

🌱 Motivation
Volunteers play a supporting role in the long-term restoration of the reserve’s ecosystems. While direct results may not always be immediately visible, the data collected and assistance provided help inform sustainable wildlife management.

In addition to conservation work, volunteers may also visit the nearby Paterson community project, offering a broader understanding of local social development efforts and cultural context.
