    À propos du programme

    Importance

Our program was born out of an urgent need to protect one of the last unguarded sea turtle nesting beaches on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. For decades, this area suffered from illegal deforestation, poaching, and the deeply rooted local tradition of consuming turtle eggs and meat. These practices have pushed sea turtle populations, especially the leatherback, toward extinction. In response, we began restoring the land and its wildlife over ten years ago. Since 2015, our focus has been on protecting nesting sea turtles through active monitoring and community education. We combat poaching by maintaining a constant presence on the beach through night patrols, relocating turtle nests to safe hatcheries, and raising awareness in local schools and communities. Our efforts combine environmental conservation with social impact, offering jobs and alternative livelihoods to locals while inspiring ecological values across generations.

    The Program

The core mission of our program is the conservation of sea turtles, particularly the leatherback, green, and hawksbill species, through protection, research, and education. Volunteers play a critical role in this effort. Their main tasks include:

    • Participating in night patrols to locate nesting turtles, collect biometric data, protect the mothers, and retrieve eggs before poachers do.
    • Helping with the hatchery, where eggs are safely buried and monitored around the clock to ensure they hatch in protected conditions.
    • Supporting environmental education initiatives within the local community and schools. Assisting with beach cleanups, nest relocation, and release of baby turtles into the sea.

Volunteers directly help prevent the extinction of these ancient marine animals while contributing to a broader conservation and social impact effort.

    The Surrounding

Volunteers will be working in a stunning and unique natural setting: a 4,200-meter stretch of pristine Caribbean beach nestled between the Tortuguero canals and the sea. This area is part of the Laguna Urpiano Wildlife Refuge, located in Matina, Limón Province, Costa Rica. The refuge spans 40 hectares of tropical forest and coastline. It’s a remote yet peaceful location, ideal for reconnecting with nature. While the area is safe, it is a public beach, and volunteers should remain mindful, especially during patrols. There are no specific health requirements, but volunteers should be physically fit for walking at night on the beach and able to handle tropical conditions such as heat and humidity. Living arrangements are simple but comfortable and designed for a communal, immersive experience. Volunteers can expect shared housing and basic amenities, with a focus on sustainability and low environmental impact.

Volunteers will work alongside a passionate and experienced local team, including patrol leaders, guards, and conservation workers, many of whom are from the surrounding communities. These individuals are not only skilled in turtle conservation but are also central to our mission of social change and education. You’ll also be collaborating with other national and international volunteers, forming a close-knit team united by a shared goal. This creates a dynamic environment for cultural exchange and mutual learning.

    We expect volunteers to

    • Be genuinely committed to wildlife conservation.
    • Be prepared for physically demanding work, especially night patrols on the beach.
    • Respect local culture and wildlife.
    • Work well in a team and adapt to communal living and a remote environment.
    In return, volunteers can expect

    • A meaningful and hands-on conservation experience.
    • Guidance and training from knowledgeable local staff.
    • Opportunities to make a real impact on one of the world’s most important nesting beaches.
    • A chance to immerse themselves in Costa Rica’s natural beauty and biodiversity.
    Special equipment needed:

    • Headlamp with a red light setting (to avoid disturbing turtles)
    • Dark-colored clothing for night patrols
    • Rain gear and insect repellent
    • Reusable water bottle and personal essentials for a remote location.

Only 1 in 1,000 baby turtles released will reach reproductive age. Will you help us so that this great dinosaur does not disappear from the seas of the world? 🐢

    Journée typique

Our main activity takes place at night, when we patrol the beach in search of sea turtles and their nests. Depending on how demanding the night has been, we do our best to maintain our regular daytime schedule.

Mornings begin at 8:00 AM with a typical and delicious Costa Rican breakfast: gallo pinto. Whether you’ve had enough sleep or not, we ask that everyone joins breakfast out of respect for the kitchen team. Afterward, if you need to rest, you're free to do so. For those who are feeling energetic and eager to help, we offer a couple of hours of volunteer work around the refuge from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, depending on the season and ongoing needs.

At 1:00 PM, we gather again for a traditional Costa Rican lunch, followed by free time to rest in your room, under the trees, on the beach, or in one of our hammocks.

Later, around 3:00 or 3:30 PM, we resume with another two hours of light and enjoyable tasks.

Dinner is served at 7:00 PM, and afterward, we prepare for our main activity: the nightly patrol. These patrols are both the most physically demanding and the most rewarding part of the program. Depending on the number of volunteers and the nesting activity, patrols can last between 4 to 6 hours. In addition to patrols, we also guard the hatchery every night from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, working in scheduled shifts. If the night has been particularly tiring or you’re assigned the final shift, don’t worry! You’ll have time to rest. That said, we strongly encourage everyone to participate in the daytime activities, which are not only important but also fun and fulfilling. These may include:

    • Reforestation
    • Beach cleanups
    • Gardening or animal care
    • Trail and green area maintenance
    • Helping with construction or renovation projects

We also make time to enjoy ourselves, whether it’s relaxing on the beach, exploring the nearby canals, or joining in games and sports with fellow volunteers. Don't miss out, it’s all part of the experience!

The environment invites you to rest, but you are always welcome to have a little time in the sea or a game of volleyball or soccer, runs on the beach, yoga, meditation, walks along the trails to observe fauna and flora as well as eventual boat rides through the canals or excursions to nearby communities. Due to the remoteness of the project it is not always possible to visit other places, but we are always willing to help you organize a weekend away if you wish.

    Informations sur l'arrivée

    • During the month of February we have to get the resort ready, we will always have infrastructures to improve and beach to clean. But above all, the main work this month is to disinfect and refill the nursery that we have to rebuild every year in front of the station where we will bury all the nests that we manage to save during the season and from which our baby turtles will come out. And also prepare the beach for research: you have to put up posts and number the 4 kilometers of beach with reference points. These posts will also have to be maintained throughout the season.
    • From March 1st until mid-to-late July, depending on the season, the main activity will be the night patrol in search of our precious turtles to collect their biometric data and save the eggs from the Poachers.
    • Starting in May and ending in August, we will also have hatchlings to release as the eggs take two months to hatch. This implies more surveillance work in the nursery and handling of baby turtles. After births, we must carry out the exhumations of the nests, which is the final part of the research, through which essential data are collected to continue with our protection work in successive seasons.

You can enter and exit the project on any day you want as long as we have agreed on the dates in advance. Remember that we have other programs and we need help throughout the year, whether or not it is turtle season. Let's talk about your doubts and interests, we are flexible.

Upon arrival, after arriving in Bataán on the bus that arrives from San José or from your previous destination, a member of our team will be waiting to greet you and take you by car to the canals on a 40-minute drive between the bathing plantations. You will arrive at the pier that we call La Alcantarilla and there will be the boat that takes you to paradise, in 15 minutes you will be at the refuge and you will be part of the family.
