A program designed to nurture a love and empathy for the natural environment and the endangered species we share it with. Train the next generation of Jungle Rangers! This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Alter 18+
Rural communities along the border of the severely endangered Leuser Ecosystem. Contribute in a big way to the destruction of these tropical habitats. Often through no fault of their own, local people are forced into illegal sources of income such as deforestation and poaching endangered species of animal such as the Sumatran Tiger. Not by choice but because they are suffering from extreme poverty and see no other way. Whilst our YSE program looks to tackle the issue of poverty in bordering communities, the Youth Ranger program directly targets those causing harm to these richly biodiverse ecosystems and the severely endangered species of mega fauna that are endemic to them.

This program looks to nurture within young people in North Sumatra a sense of empathy love and stewardship over the jungle, by training the next generation of Jungle Rangers, and by educating young people on the vital significance of the Leuser Ecosystem to the longevity of all life on Earth. Guardians of the forest as it is known, is the umbrella name for the whole community outreach program. The aim of this program is to enable young and old to come together and make a positive difference. To allow them to take ownership and responsibility of their environment.

As a Youth Ranger Instructor you will be responsible for training the next generation of Jungle Rangers. You will work alongside seasoned and professional Jungle Guides from North Sumatra to deliver this curriculum and to lead expeditions into the Tropical rainforest!

Volunteering at the Trust is no gap year holiday, our volunteers typically work from 08:00 to 18:00 on week days, and occasionally on weekends for training events and action days. We maintain an ethos of hard work and selfless commitment and all of our volunteers are here to serve the local community. However, that doesn’t stop us having a life changing experience whilst we are at it! A typical day starts at 07:00 with breakfast. On Mondays we have a Hub meeting where all of the staff and volunteers come together to plan the week ahead. Following this, you will begin your sessions. If you are placed on the ESL program, you may be teaching or assisting in Kindergarten, which begins at 08:30 or you may be teaching English classes in the afternoon, which start at 14:00. For conservation volunteers on the Youth Ranger, or YSE program, you will be delivering sessions in the afternoons, so the morning is your planning and preparation time, and for our amazing Eco Farmers you will be on the farm all day! Lunch is served at 13:00 each day, (our eco farmers have lunch at Erna’s Homestay). Weekends are your own, however occasionally, for example on events such as volunteer induction, phase review and volunteer debrief. You may also find that the Trust has arranged some incredible activities for your weekend (See section 6). On weekends when you are not walking with elephants trekking in the jungle or rafting down rivers you will have a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Sumatran culture and cuisine, with a range of guest houses, restaurants and even one bar Bukit Lawang has plenty to offer!

Our volunteers love reading in the hammocks or hanging by the river. It is just a ten minute walk to a beautiful waterfall. During the evenings and mornings it is common for volunteers to read, write, play music, relax, and go swimming in or inner tubing on the river.

At the weekend there are innumerable places located nearby that are must see!

Bukit Lawang - Famous for treks to the jungle to spot orangutans and the biggest of the villages in the area. At the weekend there are bars with live music, western restaurants, and local markets for shopping.

Tangkahan - Has an elephant camp where visitors can bathe elephants in the river. We support bathing them, and the projects but we do not support riding the elephants and hope you will share that belief with us.

Batu Rongring - Beautiful and peaceful river to chill or have a barbecue!

Berestagi - For long weekends or traveling before or after volunteers can visit this lovely town in the mountains and go trekking. It is a bit colder here and that makes it a popular place among locals and tourists!

Lake Toba - A beautiful island (Samosir) in the middle of the lake is home to waterfalls, hot springs, beaches, and much more.
